On January 9th, 2022, another era in Canadian aviation history came to a close, with the final Dash 8-300 flights operating on behalf of Air Canada.
The very last flight was AC8436 from Timmins to Toronto, and I was on board!

I Flew Across Canada On ONLY Dash 8s
Back in July, I did something really stupid.
In a video at the start of the year, I mentioned that if you really wanted to, you could fly across the entirety of Canada from coast to coast on only turboprop airplanes.
So, as one does, I added the extra challenge of finding a route that would take me across the country on exclusively Dash 8-400s.

Flying Air Canada Express' Dash 8-400 to NORTHERN ONTARIO!
Back in January of this year, I needed to get to Timmins for a very specific reason - to fly on the very last Classic Dash 8 flight with Air Canada Express, from there back to Toronto.
Obviously though, I had to get to Timmins first, and flew in the back of this Air Canada Express Dash 8-400 for a frigid winter flight up to Northern Ontario!

The Dash 8-100 is the smallest variant of the Dash 8 family, seating just 37 passengers. Several operators have flown these on behalf of Air Canada since the late 1980s, but until the end of October this year, they only flew out of Eastern Canada.
These are planned to be retired later next year, so when I heard they were moving out west for a bit, I had to jump on one.

The Calgary to Edmonton route is easily the most popular regional one within the province of Alberta, and Air Canada Express flies mostly Bombardier Q400s between the two cities.
However, there’s also a flight or two operated by some older de Havilland Canada Dash 8-300s, otherwise known as the “Classic Dash”.

Air Canada Express (Jazz) Dash 8-300 Sault Ste. Marie - Toronto
In 2021, shortly after the aviation industry began to recover from the initial devastation of the pandemic, Chorus Aviation announced future Jazz Aviation fleet plans for their Air Canada Express operation, and while many were surprised to see the acquisition of Sky Regional's Embraer E175 fleet, it was not such a shock to see the company press on without the aging Dash 8 Classic fleet. Having just retired the stubby -100's, the next step was to phase out the -300's by the new year.
Delivered in the 1980's to several of Air Canada and Canadian Airlines' regional operations, these -300's formed the new Jazz fleet post-AC/CDN merger, and were known for their colorful liveries in Orange, Yellow, Red, and Green.
On January 9th 2022, Chorus closed the chapter on the Dash 8 Classic era with a flight from Timmins, ON to Toronto. Full of spotters, Dash-8 lovers, and a few individuals who just happened to book this particular flight home, the original prototype Dash 8-300 C-GKTA landed in Toronto and parked on gate 101 in Jazz Alley at Toronto's Lester B. Pearson Airport. With a special cabin announcement, crew photos, and many sending their thanks for a reliable career, the image of Jazz Aviation's northern Ontario operations was handed over to Bombardier's Q400 and CRJ-200 aircraft, effective early morning January 10th.
I was thankful to have had many rides on the classic Dash 8 fleet when I was younger, but knowing their end was near I needed one last ride. I was thankful to find a spot on August 12th 2021, heading home from the cottage for work the next day. Although quite late due to prior scheduling conflicts with this particular aircraft, I was awarded a nice sunset and twilight hour for our arrival on 24L.

Hi again! This is the 2nd part of my Kamloops trip. I've been wanting to fly on a Dash 8-300 for quite some time now. When I saw the ticket price was only $150 I just had to do it! Overall the service was mediocre on this Jazz flight. I was surprised that we were given a snack on this flight and not my previous, which was longer. I do hope you enjoy this new trip report!
