Flight from Butaritari to Bonriki International Airport in Tarawa / Kiribati - 01/03/13

A comfortable return flight back to Tarawa after spending one night in this outer-island of Kiribati & approximately a 40 min's flight returning to Bonriki International Airport in Tarawa the capital of Kiribati, flight return on AIR-KIRIBATI on the 1st March 2013. You will notice OUR AIRLINE at the end of the video clip at Bonriki Airport arrived 4 days later after my flight booking to the Marshall Islands was cancelled at the last minute from Tarawa on the 25/02/13 due to technical problems & the aircraft still in Brisbane, I wasn't able to re-book due to my length of time here in Tarawa & OUR AIRLINE flight schedules.

Flight arrival & Departure: Bonriki International Airport / Tarawa Kiribati / 18-2-13

During my 3rd visit in Tarawa & staying for 21 nights from the 14/02/13 to 07/03/13. I was staying at TAD'S GUESTHOUSE & the accommodation is only a 5 min's drive away from the Airport, with only two flights per week with AIR-PACIFIC on their BOEING 737-700 AIRCRAFT, Flight schedule are on Mondays & Thursdays & only a 3 hour direct flight from Nadi, this certainly is one of the highlights for many of the local people viewing the arrivals & departures, the departure flight leaves Nadi at 5am & 8am arrival into Tarawa, the departure time back to Nadi should be 9am, however these flights rarely leave on time & my flight departing Tarawa on the 07/03/13 was delayed for over 3 hours & missed my connecting flight back to Sydney Australia. Stayed in Nadi for one night [expense to the airline] & flying out direct to Sydney on the 08/03/13.

Let's travel to the Republic of Kiribati (Tarawa Atoll) in the Pacific Ocean and let's view the landing of a Boeing 737 in the Republic of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean and more specifically at the Tarawa Atoll of Kiribati. This was 3 hour flight from Fiji to Kiribati with Fiji Airways.
Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, comprises 33 coral atolls and isles stretching along the equator. With lagoons and white-sand beaches, many of its islands are uninhabited, offering a remote setting for fishing, diving and bird-watching. The crowded capital, South Tarawa, made up of small islets, retains remnants of WWII battles fought on its shores, and is known for folk dancing and handicrafts.

Departure from Nadi in Fiji to Tarawa in Kiribati : 14/02/13

Checking in at 2am for my 5am direct flight to Tarawa in Kiribati, flying with Air-Pacific on a Boeing 737-700, flight duration 3 hours direct & arriving at 8am. This was my third visit to Tarawa as a tourist, first visit in 2010 & again in 2011 & of course this year, Kiribati is a very remote isolated Atoll in the middle of the pacific. In 2010 I had the opoturnity to visit Christmas Island in kiribati & that's even more isolated & not so hot as Tarawa.

[pt 1] Airport Runway at Bonriki International Airport in Tarawa -Kiribati : Feb & March 2013

Throughout my holiday in Tarawa between the 14/02/13 to the 07/03/13 I would often drive down to the airport & witness the daily activity with the local people either walking around or sitting & relaxing on the airport runway, appears to be a regular meeting place for some locals caching up with the gossip, younger people playing sporty games, cyclists, motor scooters & skate boarders, also a great oppoturnity viewing the beautiful sunsets, making conversation with some locals, watching a few late flight arrivals with AIR KIRIBATI, watching the local buses speeding their way along the runway. Some locals bathing & swimming in the ocean & finally myself driving down the entire length of the runway. I can't help thinking I'd never be allowed to do this back home & living so close to Sydney Airport in Australia.

WWII Remnants at Red Beach, Betio, Tarawa, Kiribati

Many remnants from WWII remain on this bitterly fought beach of the war. Wee Cheng points out the remains of tanks and landing craft that still remain there in July 2010.

WWII Landing Beach and Guns of the Battle of Betio, Kiribati: Nov 20-23, 1943

After reading about the Battle of Tarawa ( I set out to find the guns and landing beaches. I found the four Vickers 8-inch guns, including the three damaged guns, reinforced pillboxes, and the penetrated ammunition storage bunker. There are also some wreckage still in the lagoon, but I'm not sure if they are landing craft or tanks or parts of the gun emplacements.

A series of fourteen coastal defense guns, including four large Vickers 8-inch guns purchased during the Russo-Japanese War from the British,[3] were secured in concrete bunkers and located around the island to guard the open water and the approaches into the lagoon. It was thought these big guns would make it very difficult for a landing force to enter the lagoon and attack the island from the north side. The island had a total of 500 pillboxes or stockades built from logs and sand, many of which were reinforced with cement.[10] Forty artillery pieces were scattered around the island in various reinforced firing pits. An airfield was cut into the bush straight down the center of the island. Trenches connected all points of the island, allowing troops to move where needed under cover. As the command believed their coastal guns would protect the approaches into the lagoon, an attack on the island was anticipated to come from the open waters of the western or southern beaches. Rear Admiral Keiji Shibazaki, an experienced combat officer from the campaigns in China, relieved Saichiro on July 20, 1943 in anticipation of the coming combat. Shibazaki continued the defensive preparations right up to the day of the invasion. He encouraged his troops, saying it would take one million men one hundred years to conquer Tarawa. (Wikipedia)

Unfortunately, the site was littered with garbage, but it was still nice to walk where brave soldiers fought.

Flying into Tarawa, Kiribati (FJ231): 5 Nov 2015

Flying into Tarawa, Kiribati, was one of the most exciting flights I have ever done. On this day, we arrived from the south (from Fiji) and the flight path takes the you on a very scenic path over the the airfield to take a slight north-west turn to track along the northern archipelago until you turn south east to the runway. The flight path gave beautiful views of the island chain and the spectacular lagoon between the triangle shaped chain. The pilots must have been distracted too, because we had a rough landing - caught on video!

Flying out of Tarawa, Kiribati (FJ230): 9 Nov 2015

The departure was not nearly as exciting as the arrival flight. See my other video for a really spectacular scenic arrival.

[pt 2] My Flight Departure from Tarawa Kiribati to Nadi in Fiji : 07/03/13

It's Thursday morning on the 7th March 2013 at 6am, checking in early for my 9am flight departure from Tarawa to Nadi, flying with Air-Pacific on a Boeing 767-700, checked in as normal with plenty of confusion & slow pace at the check-in counter, & not one fan working in the departure terminal, paid my AUD $20- Departure Tax. Then went back outside watching the aircraft land & just basically killing time with the odd conversation with other tourists & hotel staff [ free transfer to the airport ], like myself & many other passengers we are hoping to depart on time for 9am. Many of us were surprised to be boarding the aircraft at 8:30am, anyway within a few minutes we were all sweating & dripping from perspiration we were informed from the captain that there was a problem with the air-conditioning system in the aircraft, 10 min's later we are all asked to remove ourselves from the aircraft & return to the departure lounge, many apologies from the captain & hope to rectify the problem ASAP.
One hour passed then 2 hours & then 3 hours & we were all given our light snacks in the lounge area, food & drinks taken off the aircraft which basically meant we had to starve once we had departed, with the captain & some airport engineers contacting air-pacific back in Nadi the problem was eventually sorted out, the flight departed 3.5 hrs later at 12:30pm, some passengers had missed their connecting flights from Nadi & like myself I had missed my connecting flight returning to Sydney in Australia, we eventually landed in Nadi at 3:30pm, however i have to give credit when it's warranted; Air Pacific kindly arranged accommodation in Nadi for the one night at their expense. The flight duration from Tarawa to Nadi was approximately 3 hours without any further problems. & I reached home on Friday the 08/03/13 at 12:00pm.
