Flying into Europe's Most Challenging Airport - Funchal, Madeira
I have been wanting to go to Funchal, Madeira airport in Portugal for a long time, as I have heard so much about the scary and challenging landing there. I flew on a TAP Air Portugal A319 from Lisbon to Madeira in the morning. The pilot explained why Funchal, Madeira is a difficult airport to land. The variable wind on the final approach and the draft from the mountain has created tough conditions for planes to land.
After landing in Madeira, I went planespotting with local plane spotters. There are a lot of amazing locations to spot planes arriving and departing. I also went underneath the runway pillars, where the runway has been extended.
The next day I flew back to Lisbon on a TAP Air Portugal A321neo, with Retro Livery. I met with first officer Patricia onboard and she shared with me her aviation story. Check out her landing into Lisbon. Find out more from the video.

Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport commonly known as Madeira Airport or Funchal Airport is an international airport in the Portuguese archipelago and autonomous region of Madeira. The airport is located 13.2 km east-northeast of the regional capital, Funchal, after which it is sometimes informally named. It is the fourth-busiest airport in Portugal. The airport is named after Madeiran football player Cristiano Ronaldo.
The airport is considered one of the most peculiarly perilous airports in the world, due to its location and its spectacular runway construction. It received the Outstanding Structure Award in 2004 by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. The History Channel program Most Extreme Airports ranked it as the ninth most dangerous airport in the world and the third most dangerous in Europe. Pilots must undergo additional training to land at the airport.
Madeira Airport is a geographically unusual airport, as it is perched on a foreland jutting out to sea. At the end of runway 05, there lie hills and cliffs which make a direct ILS approach and landing unavailable. Instead aircraft have to do a visual approach which involves flying around the airport, then snaking around in a 150° turn before lining up on a very short final approach.
Madeira Airport was officially opened on 7 July 1964. The first flight to land there was a TAP Air Portugal Lockheed Constellation with 80 passengers on board.

Very difficult morning at Madeira Airport, the wind was blowing hard and the heavy turbulence on runway 23 short final was giving extra work to the pilots. The first TAP land was his second attempt after a go-around.
Runway 23 is very famous for his bubble just after the threshold.

TAP Portugal flight 1699 (Airbus A320 Neo) from Lisbon landing at Madeira Airport, the most dangerous airport in Europe. The airport landing pathway is rather short being constructed on numerous concrete poles, as Madeira terrain is very mountainous with no plains. Plane has to make a big swing by the mountains to approach it. Views of the Madeira Airport named after Christiano Ronaldo. Filmed by me on January 5 2021. A day before TAP Portugal flight from Lisbon failed to make landing at Madeira and took off meters away from the ground. We were lucky however to make it.

Madeira island is 310 miles from the African coast and 620 miles from the European continent, only 1h 30mn flight from mainland Portugal and about 3h from all the main countries in Europe.
Madeira Islands are just a short trip from Europe (more or less 4 hours from UK), to a destination where you can combine holidays by the sea, in the mountains or in the city. Discovered early in the 15th century by the Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco, Tristão Vaz Teixeira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo, Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal.
Nowadays Madeira is a popular destination for tourists of all ages. Its constant mild climate (temperatures between 20 and 27°C) keeps the spring on Madeira all year round. The levadas, an ingenious system of stone- and concrete-lined watercourses distributing water from the rainy north to the dry south, help flowers and crops flourish all year. That's why this island is called the Garden in the Atlantic. The maintenance pathways for these water canals provide wonderful level trails for hiking in the mountains (up to 1861m) and through the tremendous landscape.

Flying on an A330 to Europe's most challenging airport. A TAP Air Portugal Flight Review.
Even on a beautiful and sunny day, landing at Funchal airport on the island of Madeira requires special pilot training, also due to the challenging winds, and the runway isn't the longest either. Part of the runway is even on pillars, which looks quite impressive (see thumbnail). Usually you'd find props there, Airbus A320's and Boeing B737's. Flying into Funchal on a widebody such as the Airbus A330 NEO is next level. Especially during the night. In gusty winds. During rain.... But it all worked out, and I'm happy to present to you this TAP Air Portugal flight review about their Economy Class product. I tried Business Class, but it was not available for bookings for some reason.
