The Desert Inn Bar & Restaurant | Yeehaw Junction | Abandoned Historical Florida Landmark

Howdy! Today we are in Yeehaw Junction, FL near Kenansville, FL where we are taking a closer look at what remains of the Desert Inn! This old cowboy spot is too cool not to document. There is so much history in this place and we are here for it!

#DesertInn #FloridaLandmark #Abandoned

In the 1930s, the spot was originally named Jackass Crossing, a reference to the burros that ranchers rode to Desert Inn.
As early as 1889, the Desert Inn was a bar room and brothel for cowboys and lumber workers. The Desert Inn did not have full-service water and electricity until 1978.
Throughout the years, the Desert Inn was used as a trading post, gas station, and dance hall. In 1994, after being added to the National Register of Historic Places, the unused rooms above the restaurant were converted into a modest museum that featured a bordello suite with red carpet, lace pillows and a swing.
The Desert Inn closed in June 2018.
In the early morning hours of December 22, 2019, a tractor trailer crashed into the side of the inn. The trailer jackknifed and photos show the roof of the inn collapsed onto the roof of the tractor trailer. The President of the Osceola County Historical Society, which owns and operated the Desert Inn, stated that a determination will be made if any part of the building can be saved pending a survey by a structural engineer. Fortunately, a few weeks prior, valuable artifacts from inside the Desert Inn were removed and put in their archives as part of a clean up day and restoration efforts.

Abandoned Detention Center In South Florida

#urbex #abandoned #decay #abandonedplaces #urbexphotography #urbexworld #lostplaces #urbanexploration #photography #decay

Today we are exploring an abandoned detention center that opened its doors in 1974.

As part of a master plan involving the construction of jails in local communities to serve the local population. This facility was the only one built under this concept and would close just two years later in 1976

This facility transferred hands and served as a work release center until its closure sometime in the mid-2010

Many locations including this one were closed in lieu of more modern and up-to-date facilities.

Hamilton Disston Sugar Plantation ABANDONED - St. Cloud, Florida

While I was in the area, I stopped by the remains of the Hamilton Disston Sugar Plantation in St. Cloud, Florida.

In 1885, Hamilton Disston, Pennsylvania industrialist and pioneer Florida promoter, established an extensive experimental sugar plantation on the drained lands around St. Cloud. The enterprise, part of Disston's promotional scheme, prospered for several years and operated its own cane mill. After the abolition of the federal bounty on domestic sugar, the business failed and much of the machinery was sold for scrap. The failure caused large scale sugar planting in Florida to be abandoned for many years.
