MOSH Museum of Science & History Pressed Pennies | Jacksonville, FL

During a quick trip to Jacksonville we visited the Museum of Science & History (MOSH). There were some really interesting exhibits and a large section all about space exploration, and of course you know we were able to track down a pressed penny machine. Keep on Pressing!

The History of Pressed Pennies

Pressed pennies. Elongated pennies. Smush pennies. They’ve picked up many different names over the years. Whatever you call them, these little trinkets can be found at tourist destinations all around the world, and they’re especially prevalent in Walt Disney World. But where did they come from? Why did we just start flattening pennies?

As it turns out, the history of elongated pennies is actually a bit muddied. There’s a generally accepted place and time in which they were considered to come about, yet there are also accounts of similarly flattened coins existing for decades before. However since there are no records of those accounts, we’ll go with what we can trace back.

In 1893 everyone was celebrating the Chicago’s World’s Fair. It was also known at the time as the World’s Columbian Exposition, in honor of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in America. They were a year off but I imagine they didn’t want to wait another 400 years. Fun fact, but one of the construction workers who helped build the complex used for the World’s Fair that year was a failed orange grower from Florida named Elias Disney. Over the next ten years he and his wife Flora would have five kids, including Walt and Roy Disney.

The World’s Fair then, as it was every time, was a year long event in which companies and countries from around the world came together to proudly show off their latest innovations and highlight the best of their culture. It’s where the world was introduced to the first ferris wheel, and where entire new audiences were exposed to a new genre of music called ragtime. If this all sounds similar in theme to Epcot, that’s no accident. The Epcot theme park was designed to conceptually be a persistent world’s fair.

As the story goes, one of the technologies on display at the fair was a press machine. Now presses weren’t exactly brand new at the time, but the use of this one caught people’s attention. A jeweler had modified the machine to include an engraving on the press, and in order to show off the immense strength of the machine he would use it to do something that no person could do on their own, like flatten a coin.

For the cost of around 5 to 10 cents, along with the coin to be flattened with thousands of pounds of pressure, guests were able to not only see the machine at work, but at the end of the display they’d have the flattened coin as a memento. The engraving was simple and just said “Columbian Exposition 1893” on it. As for the coins, the press was adjustable, so the elongating wasn’t limited to just pennies.

The whole attraction ended up being very popular both for the novelty of seeing it at work, and for the fairly cheap souvenir guests received as a result. Cameras weren’t as ubiquitous at that point. The Kodak was only released a few years prior and the more popular Brownie camera was still 7 years off. The pressed coin idea would find itself popping up at fairs and exhibitions all around the world for the next 72 years. This was known by collectors as the “oldies” period.

In 1965 the second period began, which was known as the “Modern Elongated” period. At this point private individuals began to design and create their own pressing machines, which allowed the memento to expand beyond major events. However even at that point the process required an attendant to operate the machine.

It would be 6 years later in 1971 until the first coin-operated penny press machine was invented, and it would be their growth in popularity in the 1980s when the third and current era of elongated coins, the “Contemporary Elongated” would begin.

That’s where Disney would come in. The first every pressed penny machine that was introduced to Disneyland was introduced in June of 1987, a little over 30 years ago. The design was simply Mickey Mouse’s face in front of a starburst, and so it was referred to as the “Mickey Sunburst” and “Mickey Starburst”. The machines didn’t make their way over to Walt Disney World until 1994 but when they did they began to grow in popularity and new machines were placed all around the parks.

Today there are over 750 pressed coin designs available on Walt Disney World property, and far more than that available at vacation and recreation destinations all around the world. There are websites dedicated to tracking as many of them as possible and collectors who make a mission out of getting as many as possible. These little flat pennies have withstood the test of time, and over 100 years later, as popular as ever.

Emergency Pressed Penny Kit

Recently I encountered a surprise machine while I was out and about one day. The only problem was I didn't have any extra pennies or quarters in my pocket. Thankfully years ago I had started to keep an Emergency Pressed Penny Kit in my car at all times. I've filled it with supplies and most importantly extra quarters and copper pennies should I ever need them. I thought this may be of interested to other collectors and wanted to go over what I use for this kit and where you can create your own. Remember to always be prepared and Keep on Pressing!

Edison Ford Winter Estates Pressed Pennies | Fort Myers Florida

Day 2 of our Vacation in Fort Myers Florida and we took a break from the beautiful beach to try a local attraction. The Edison Ford Winter Estates is a very interesting place to visit. I will admit our two daughters were not overly thrilled with the history lesson, but my wife and I found it pretty unique. You start in a bit of a museum giving history on Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, then you get to see one of Edison's Labs, and eventually after crossing the street you can see up close their two estates that sit right next to each other on a sprawling grounds with huge trees, beautiful gardens and of course a pressed penny machine was hidden somewhere.

Florida Museum Natural History - Pressed Pennies

We took a quick trip up to Gainesville Florida for a couple days on the hunt for some pressed pennies. Our first stop was at the Florida Museum of Natural History. Admission to this museum is free but they do take donations which I would absolutely recommend. This was a great little museum with plenty of exhibits and lots of fun things for the kids to do. They also have an amazing Butterfly exhibit that I just could not believe, and probably spent most of our visit in that area just looking at all of them. This was a great first stop on our trip. Happy Collecting!

Museum of Drag Racing Pressed Pennies

I will start of by stating that I'm no expert when it comes to Drag Racing. In my youth I visited quite a few little local 1/4 mile tracks to watch friends racing down the track, but it's not something I have kept up with over the years and if asked now who any of the drivers were I wouldn't be able to tell you. But there is one name that I do remember Don Garlits considered the father of Drag Racing, and as luck would have it he has a Drag Racing museum in Ocala Florida. This sounded like a very interesting place and once we got there I was completely overwhelmed by what we found inside. They have about 300 vehicles, and over 90 drag racing cars. The history inside this place was truely amazing. Oh did I mention there were a couple penny machines, yes that was just the cherry on top of the this adventure. Even if you are not a drag racing fan I still think you will be interested in what they had on display.

We are getting closer to seeing all the 4-design pressed penny machines converted to $1.00. This week we will review all the converted machines at Hollywood Studios. Jungle Adventures Penny Press Machine in Christmas Florida

Merry Christmas!!

I found a place that is about an hour outside of Orlando called.... Christmas Florida (whaaaat!) and knew I had to go check it out for the Holidays. While there we found a classic roadside attraction called Jungle Adventures and headed inside to see tons of gators, a couple Florida panthers, and a lot more local wildlife. Plus to top of our visit we came across a penny machine in the gift shop which was the icing on the fruit cake. Enjoy this Christmas video and I hope you and your family have a safe a wonderful holiday!!

FUN Coin Convention Winter 2019 | Pressed Pennies

Just a few weeks ago Florida United Numismatists help with 2019 Winter coin show / convention. The show moves around to different cities all over the state, but this time was at the Orlando / Orange County Convention Center which is huge. My daughter and I headed over on a Saturday to check it out and were blown away with the size of the show. There were vendors all over the place, special exihibits on display for judging, and The Elongated Collectors (TEC) had a booth to promote the club. Plus they were giving out some free pressed pennies. The entire day was a great outing and we met lots of fellow collectors along the way. Be sure to check your local area for coin shows because you never know what you might find there.

SeaWorld Orlando | Pressed Pennies Converted to $1

This conversion started late summer of 2020 and eventually completed during the Holiday season. Unfortuantly as we have see lately this price increase has not been just at the Disney parks, but now extends to other Theme Parks around the Central Florida region. The designs are mostly the same, but the machines themselves have received a nice new coat of pain and were working pretty well. Enjoy a last little bit of Holiday season before we proceed head first into the New Year!

Collectible Souvenir Pressed Coins - Walt Disney World, Florida

The Souvenir Pressed Coin Machines will imprint a design (press) on a penny for two quarters (51 cents total) or on a quarter for four quarters ($1.25 total). This is probably one of the least expensive souvenirs, unless you want to collect all of them!

According to the Walt Disney World Company, the collectible souvenir pressed coins, also called elongated coins, started appearing at Walt Disney World in 1994. A pressed coin is created when a coin is squeezed between two rollers, one of which has an engraving on it's surface. Approximately, 2500 pounds of pressure is put on the coin as it is flattened. Currently, there are penny, dime and quarter pressed coin machines at Walt Disney World. These machines are primarily run electrically, but most of the new machines have been the four die hand crank variety. These pressed coin machines feature designs containing Disney characters, theme parks, attractions and special events. Each machine contains either one, three or four different designs.

Depending on what penny you use, you may get a smear of zinc (silver looking metal). In 1982, pennies were made with both copper and zinc. Suggest you use pre-1982 pennies.

You might want to get the design pressed onto the face of the penny because the tail side sometimes leaves parts of the monument and you end up with an incomplete image.

Generally, if you insert the penny so that the face side is to the right, that is the side that will be pressed with the design. Also the quarter to the far left tends to be the quarter that gets pressed in Quarter Presses.

Elongated coins are coins that have been elongated (flattened or stretched) and embossed with a new design with the purpose of creating a commemorative or souvenir token. The collecting of elongated coins is a branch of numismatics. Elongated coins are also categorized as exonumia. This class of elongateds covers issues that are prominent in amusement parks such as Disney Resorts and attractions throughout the United States, and the world.

SERIES 2! WDW 50th Anniversary Pressed Pennies

Well this was certainly a surprise. Disney has released a Second series of pressed penny designs celebrating their 50th Anniversary. This is a much smaller set but just to distinguish it from the initial designs I'm dubbing these Series 2. Come with me as I take you around Walt Disney World property and I'll show you where to find each of these new penny designs. Enjoy and as always Keep on Pressing!

How Much Would Every Pressed Penny at Disney World Cost?

Earlier this week I made a video about the history of the pressed penny. Towards the end of that video I mention that there are currently over 750 pressed coins in Walt Disney World today. There are 770 to be exact, spread across 204 machines on property. Thinking about that number, I started to wonder how much it would cost to get all of them

I try not to bury the lead too much, so I’ll get right to the point: it isn’t cheap. Collecting every pressed coin on Walt Disney World property is going to cost you $462.14

Before I dig into that figure, I want to thank PressCoins.com for the data. They are a fantastic resource when it comes to Disney World pressed pennies, and if you ever find yourself wanting to hunt some down, this is the website to do it. I also want to thank my pal Disney Dan for help with researching this!

So how does it break down? Well the complete collection would include 69 pressed quarters, 4 pressed dimes, and 697 pressed pennies. Now of that $462 you’d be spending on pressed coins, only $24.62 of that would actually be the coins getting pressed. You’d be flattening $17.25 worth of quarters, 40 cents worth of dimes, and $6.97 worth of pennies. The rest goes to the machines.

In terms of location, it’s pretty well distributed. The Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios tie at 135 coins per park. Epcot follows behind at 124 coins, and the Animal Kingdom comes in behind that at 77 coins. So where are the rest? Well Disney Springs offers 101 coins, and the two Disney water parks have 18. The final 180 coins can be found across all of the resorts at Disney World.

Now for my favorite part: Most of these machines obviously require coins. Not just to smush, but also to operate. There are a few newer machines that accept credit cards, mostly in Hollywood Studios, but for the most part you’re going to need coins, lots and lots of coins.

If you wanted to bring all the coins you’d need with you, you’d need to bring 2008 coins. That’s 549 pennies and 1455 quarters. Oh yeah, and 4 dimes. That’s going to mean some heavy pockets.

I took a look at the average weight of a quarter, dime, and penny, since I was that bored, and it turns out carrying all of those coins with you will mean carrying around 21.1 pounds, or 9.6 kilograms of extra weight.

So I guess it goes without saying, but if you find yourself on the hunt for every pressed coin in Walt Disney World, you might want to make ample use of change machines around property and take the journey slow. Especially if you want to spread out that $462 price tag.

Now the next question is if Disney will accept the $462 worth of pressed coins as payment for a 5 day park hopper.

Probably not.

Universal CityWalk Orlando - Pressed Pennies 2019

Ok we teased this long enough. It's time to head over to Universal Studios Orlando and start finding all of the pressed penny machines they have to offer. First up we take some time to walk around CityWalk. This place is filled with restaurants, bars, clubs and of course pressed penny machines. Unfortunately none of the Universal Resorts or hotels have penny machines, but that's okay CityWalk has enough to keep us busy this time around.

Also, please check out the below link for a wonderful Etsy store that offers some very unique WDW pressed penny booklets to store your coins. I bought a set of the booklets and they really are great. The store proprietor Rhys is fantastic and I wish him all the best. Enjoy!
