A Day on American Samoa's Tutuila Island

In 2019, we set an adventurous goal to visit every National Park in the United States, including the 12 far-flung parks in Alaska, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

We arrived in Pago Pago on Tutuila during their summer (which was early February) and spent the following four days exploring the unique territory of American Samoa. This aerial video showcases American Samoa's iconic Flower Pot Rock, which appears on the license plates there, and Pago Pago harbor, home to the Starkist tuna cannery.

AMERICAN SAMOA: Exploring the disappointing capital ☹️ of PAGO PAGO (Pacific Ocean)

American Samoa and the capital of Pago Pago, what to see, tour of Pago Pago in American Samoa. Let's travel to American Samoa (also known as Eastern Samoa) in the Pacific Ocean and let's go for a walk around Pago Pago, the capital of the American territory of American Samoa. In Pago Pago, we will see a variety of sights and I will explain to you why this place will not be on anyone's visitation plans any time soon. American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of Samoa.
Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, comprises a string of coastal villages on Tutuila Island. It’s a gateway to the National Park of American Samoa, which protects lush rainforest, coral reefs and waters visited by humpback whales. Fagatogo village is home to the Jean P. Haydon Museum, exhibiting local historic artifacts in a former U.S. Navy facility. A trail leads up to Blunts Point Battery, a WWII gun site.

National Park of American Samoa

This year we're visiting all 59 National Parks to celebrate the NPS centennial year and share the park love! National Park of American Samoa was #24. It's the only park in the southern hemisphere, it's the farthest in our travels and it's completely unique. Since the park doesn't have camping, we utilized its unique homestay program to stay for a week in Vatia village with a family. The village was surrounded by the park on all sides and we were constantly exploring the park right behind the house with the kids. Check out our video to see how we found our park through the beautiful land, cultures and mostly people of American Samoa!

Samoa - Into Water & Beyond holiday travel guide part 1/4

The iconic Aggie Greys Resort which is now the Sheraton Aggie Greys is located close to the international airport so is the perfect place to stay after the flight and relax before embarking on your Samoan adventure. The rooms are comfortable and overlook the stunning lagoon area. They also provide free bottled water in the room.

We had an overnight flight so we freshened up before heading out for a dive with Aqua Samoa ( ) in the warm waters of the surrounding coral reefs and lagoons. The colourful plate corals were stunning and the warm water made for a comfortable and enjoyable dive.

Back at the resort it was time to relax and enjoy a few cocktails in the pool bar and on their secluded lagoon beach. There are a few different restaurants there to enjoy a meal at too.

Close to the resort is Manono Wharf, where you can head over to Manono Island for a day. It is only 4km from Upolu and you can jump on a boat to take you over there for as little as a few dollars per person, however these can be very infrequent with no real guaranteed departure times. So you can also organise a private boat for a return journey from about SAT$60. Visiting the island is like taking a step back in time and there are no dogs or cars there, only a walking track that takes you around the island and the 4 villages that make up this island. There is also overnight accommodation if you want to stay longer and really get in to the traditional lifestyle there and escape the outside world for a few days.

We then head in to Apia, Samoa's capital city. This is a buzzing and vibrant city with a lot going on. We stayed at the iconic Aggie Greys Sheraton Hotel while here. This hotel is one of the longest running in Samoa and has a very rich history. We were also lucky enough to be here on their Fia Fia Cultural night, which is an extravaganza of traditional dancing, music and food.
