In the year 1950, Subbayya Gaaru opened a small 10-seater mess in Kakinada in the East Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh to serve honestly-priced food of the land. Legend has it that he would treat each customer as a guest visiting his home and leave no stone unturned in feeding them. Tales of his legendary hospitality and traditional fare soon spread far and wide and this tiny eatery evolved into the legendary Subbaiah Gari chain of restaurants. I visit their newly opened Bengaluru outpost where I explore the kitchen and the making of some special dishes before savouring a lavish 30-item banana leaf meal that is served with dollops of neyi (ghee) and old-fashioned hospitality that can leave you bursting at the seams! Special Vegetarian Meal
If you’re looking to savour the traditional flavours of the North Godavari region in Andhra Pradesh, look no further than this special 30-dish Andhra Bhojanam. You begin with tantalising sweets like annavaram prasadam, poornam boorelu, junnu, savoury fries like the tamalapaku (betel leaf) bajji, garelu, before moving on to the procession of curries, lentils, tantalising rice preparations like the pullihora (tamarind rice), panasa (raw jackfruit) mukkala biryani and chutneys. The list of dishes served is far too long to be contained within this description, but suffice to say the food prepared by the master cooks who have trained in the original Kakinada Subbayya Gaari Hotel will hold your attention. But then, this is also the sort of meal that you need to savour at leisure, in order to do full justice to the dishes that are served with generous dollops of neyi (ghee) and old-fashioned hospitality.

Subbayya Gari Hotel is the brain child of Shree Subbayya garu. His unique ability to combine ingredients in a perfect proportion using the finest and freshest ingredients made him bring out the best taste of traditional food of the land. Mr. Subbayya's passion towards bringing the delicious and hygienic food at an affordable cost made him to streamline his efforts to open a mess. Ultimately, in 1950, with the support staff of 10 people, he opened a small mess and started serving meals for just 50 paisa.

Later In 1955, Mr. Subbayya had moved the mess to Kakinada, a town in East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh and named it as Sri Krishna Vilas. His immense efforts, home-like hospitality and of course the love for the art of cooking soon spread far & wide and this tiny mess evolved into the legendary Subbayya Gari Hotel.

One thing that made Subbayya Gari Hotel exemplary in restaurants space is its hospitality. Every customer is treated as a royal guest and the friendly stewards serve the food with love, warmth, and passion. The way the customers are pampered to taste all the recipes made it an iconic culinary destination, an epitome of authentic vegetarian restaurant.

This video is about our 6th day tour of our Andhra Pradesh. You will see the journey from Kakinada to Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram), following are the activities which we had done throughout the day. Kakinada to Rajahmundry - 70 km

Date of journey - 15th Jan 2023.

In this series you will see Vizag, Araku, Lambasingi, Annavaram, Rajahmundry, Machilipatnam and Vijayawada.

Kakinada is about 160 km away from Visakhapatnam.

Bhimas Tiffin Centre - We had our breakfast at this restaurant.
Pesarattu with Upma - Rs 65. Good breakfast joint at Kakinada.

Kotiah Kaza - Just opposite to Bhimas tiffin, we went to Kotiah Kaza, quite popular, most recommended by the locals.
15 Rs per pc and Rs 280 per kg.

Proceeded towards Coringa wildlife sanctuary,

Coringa wildlife sanctuary - it is the third largest mangrove forest in india, we walked for about 2 km on a board, then reached the boating point.
Boating charges - Rs 100 per person for normal boat, Speed boat - Rs 200 per person.
Timings - 9am to 5 pm

Subbayya Gari Hotel - We went to the oldest branch in kakinada, the best place to taste all the andhra delicacies in one go.
Price for non ac sitting - Rs 160 & AC sitting - Rs 230.
For Bhuta bhojnam (parcel) - Rs 375
Food at this hotel was among my best 5 of India and best of Andhra Pradesh.

Kakinada Beach - this beach elevation is just 2m above sea level, so it is quite uncommon.

We checked in to this hotel as part of our Konaseema Trip.

Here the hotel staff are very very friendly and they serve food with at most love, they offer us a total of 35 varieties in one single Meals that is ordered which includes 5 flavours of rice, 6 flavours of vegetable curries, 5 type of sweets, Pulka, Multiple fry items, Paneer, varieties of pickles, Powders and Curd, butter milk to finish with

Keeping food aside, the major factor that drives people come here is their Hospitality towards their customers

They lay low for 27 months before bouncing back with a small eatery to serve up Andhra delicacies made to the recipes of their parents and grandparents. Curryce Andhra Bhojanam, located in RT Nagar, North Bengaluru is only four tables large, but in my opinion, the food that they serve is destined for bigger things ahead. Join me in this homely episode where I taste a full-fledged veg bhojanam, kodi vepudu, gongura chicken royulu roast and a memorable Hyderabadi style biryani.

Every city has its celebrated restaurants, these are the ones that everybody knows. And then there are hundreds of tiny eateries that are almost unknown except to those they quietly provide daily sustenance to - office goers, working professionals, students yearning for a taste of home.... However, in the current scenario of work from home, offices and educational institutions being shut, these establishments that once were the lifeline of the communities they served are now finding it difficult to sustain themselves.

In this episode, I visit one such Bengaluru eatery, Polamma’s Mess, named so by its owner, Jagadeesh Reddy in memory of his late grandmother who raised him as an orphan in a village near Kalahasti, Andhra Pradesh. I hear his poignant account of how this once bustling eatery is barely getting by, which is rather unfortunate given the simple but delicious Andhra vegetarian bhojanam that Polamma’s serves in addition to other meaty sides. I hope you will find within your heart the desire to support eateries like Polamma’s Mess. These need your support today to help keep them on their feet to continue serving the workforce, students, community at large… when things get back to normal in the future. Take care and stay safe.


Veg Meals
My favourite part of the meal here. Simple but satisfying affair of rice served with a nutritious and creamy ‘thottakoora’ pappu, vegetable for the day, sambar, rasam, yoghurt and the staple condiments of pappula podi, ghee and ghongura chutney. The simplicity of the meal is reminiscent of what you will be served in an Andhra home.

The chicken is double cooked, first in a deep-flavoured masala and then roasted in ghee with plenty of curry leaves and spices. Moist inside and with a slight roasted crunch, this is a must-order if you like chicken and prefer it sprightly and spicy..

This chicken fry is fortified with the richness of cashew paste and red chilli powder, the sort of preparation that will make you sweat if you aren’t accustomed to chilli heat.

The Friday special at Polamma’s Mess is portioned enough to feed one, or two if you precede it with the Andhra veg bhojanam. There is plenty of masala and the chicken is moist and juicy, made in the kacchi akhni style. A recipe picked up by Jagadeesh during his stint in Hyderabad.
