Golden Renewal: Understanding Kintsugi Repair

ZOOM Gallery Talk
Golden Renewal: Understanding Kintsugi Repair
Recorded July 22, 2021

Alluring and intriguing, kintsugi has lately caught on in Western popular culture and has shown up in various conversations well beyond art. For centuries, this Japanese form of lacquer repair with gold has been used to restore functional ceramics. Meaning ‘gold joining,’ kintsugi is interconnected with the long history of tea culture and the craft tradition in Japan.

More recently, kintsugi has found resonance with those who seek a deeper meaning in the golden veins running along the cracks of a once-broken plate or cup. Our panelists of diverse backgrounds will illuminate the many aspects of kintsugi that will allow us to better understand its origins, technique, and application for collectors and connoisseurs of Japanese art.

THE QUEST TO CATCH MAINE'S RAREST FISH || For Wild's Sake: The Rare Trout Chronicles | Episode 1

Join us for the debut episode of For Wild's Sake: The Rare Trout Chronicles, season 1! A series which explores human beings relationship to the natural world, in hopes of gaining a better understanding of how and why we assign value to wild things and places. In a quest to illustrate rare and threatened species of wild native trout in watercolor, artist Chase Bartee and wife Aimee set off on a multi year, cross country adventure of discovery.

We begin our journey in the North Maine Woods, in search of one of the state, and country's rarest fish; The Blueback Trout (Salvelinus apinus aquossa). Long believed to be many different species, Maine's rare strain of landlocked arctic charr faces great peril in its struggle to hold on along the southern most margins of its range. Follow along as we uncover the past, present, and future of this unique species as well as ready ourselves for fill time road living in our 1985 VW Vanagon, Bullwinkle.

Will we be able to find the Bluebacks? And if so, can we catch them with a fly rod? Notoriously hard to catch by fly fishing, these elusive fish live in cold, deep, and remote lakes in Northern Maine. We enlist the help of Igor Sikorsky, the grandson of an aviation giant, to transport us via his small Cessna float plane to Big Reed Pond, a small jewel, surrounded by 5,000 acres of old growth forest and protected by The Nature Conservancy.

The Beast of Turin Talk presented by Duncan Pittaway.

Originally conceived in 1911, the FIAT S76, better known as the Beast of Turin, is one of the most outrageous cars ever built. Its colossal inline-four engine displaced 28.4 litres and produced 300 hp at just 1000 rpm. The chassis featured a rigid axle suspension system with leaf springs. Brakes were only installed on the rear axle.

Only two were built, and Fiat sold the second Beast to a wealthy Russian Prince named Boris Soukhanov, who hired racing driver Pietro Bordino to drive it at Brooklands and attempt to break the land speed record. But when Bordino took it onto the track, it was so terrifying that he refused to go over 90 mph.

After many changes of ownership, the Beast was acquired by Duncan Pittaway in 2003, and a lengthy restoration process began. Duncan discovered that the original engine from the first S76 had survived and managed to acquire it. After several years of hard work that saw the double chain-drive gearbox, body, and many other components being rebuilt using the original Fiat drawings, the Beast of Turin was brought back to life.

We are delighted that Duncan agreed to bring the Beast back to Brooklands and to tell the story of this extraordinary 112 year old motor car.

Designing our Catamaran Rudder Mechanism // Catamaran Building Project Ep264

Building a Catamaran can be a lot of thinking and not a lot of building. To design and install a rudder system isn't quite as easy as you think. A rudder is a simple piece of equipment that creates resistance to steer the boat, it could be as simple as a piece of wood, a barn door or a piece of foam encased in carbon and in Designing our Catamaran Rudder Mechanism I have found some challenges that require research, more space, and the engineering know how to ensure it will function smoothly in the worst of conditions.
