WOMEN of K2: DEATH on the Mountain

First Five Women who Summited K2, All of whom are Dead. Examining who they were, why they climbed, and how they died and what it means for all who attempt the Savage Mountain.

K2 is called the “Savage Summit” and it’s earned the name. Though not quite as tall as Everest, it is far more dangerous. Located at the border of China and Pakistan in the remote Karakoram Range, K2 has some of the harshest climbing conditions and weather of any place in the world. At the beginning of the 2004 climbing season, 90 women had successfully summitted Everest, but only five female climbers had reached the peak of K2. Today, each of those brave pioneers is dead.

In 1986 Polish climber Wanda Rutkiewicz became the first women ever to reach the top of K2 and was followed to the summit that same year by French climber Liliane Barrard and British climber Julie Tullis, both of whom died on their descent. Then in 1992, the summer that Rutkiewicz perished on Kangchenjunga, French alpinist Chantal Mauduit summitted K2, and survived, only to die six years later on another 8000 meter peak. Finally in 1995 British climber and mother Alison Hargreaves reached the top but was killed shortly after starting her descent.

These courageous, remarkable women can no longer tell their stories of defeating the ferocious mountain.

Mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, poets and engineers, the female pioneers of K2 were complex personalities in the controversial world of high altitude mountaineering, and their lives and deaths are a reminder of the high price climbers often pay to follow their dreams.

Malavath Poorna is now the youngest female in the world to reach the summit- Mt. Everest, a dream for all adventure seekers around the world. At 6.30 in the morning of 25th May 2014, she unfurled the Indian tricolour at the highest point on this planet. She was just 13 years and 11 months at that time. Born of a very poor family of agricultural labourers, Poorna is also the youngest Indian to reach the summit. In fact she was just one month older then the youngest person ever to climb the Mount Everest successfully, who was a US boy. A ninth standard student at Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Institutions Society's school, Poorna struggled against all odds to be on top. Hailing from a background, where none of her villager folk have ever seen snow in their lives, Poorna achieved the feat in just nine months time from being selected for a rock climbing camp near Hyderabad (in September 2013) to reach to the top of the world. BIOGRAPHY

Arunima Sinha is the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest. She was a national level volleyball players who in 2011, aged just 24, was thrown from a moving train by some thugs for refusing to hand over the gold chain she was wearing. She was run over by a passing train and her resulting injuries led to her leg being amputated below the knee.

It was while still being treated in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, that Arunima resolved to climb Mount Everest. She was deeply inspired by the cricketer, Yuvraj Singh, who had successfully battled cancer and she resolved to do something with her life. She excelled in the basic mountaineering course from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi.
This was followed by 18 months of rigorous training. On 21st May 2013, Arunima reached the summit of Everest as part of the Tata Group Sponsored Eco Everest Expedition, becoming the first female amputee to scale the famous mountain.

Her dream is to climb the highest peaks in each continent around the world. She has so far scaled Everest in Asia, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Kosciuszko in Australia and Aconcagua in South America.

Arunima Sinha currently runs a non-profit school for underprivileged handicapped children.

In 2014, Arunima’s book, ‘Born Again on the Mountain’ was published, the launch was attended by the Prime Minister of India, Narenda Modi.

In 2015, she was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India. She is also the recipient of the Tenzing Norgay Highest Mountaineering Award in India.First Indian Woman climbed Mount Everest
