Anyone that's ever experienced it knows that jet lag is such a drag. It occurs when you travel quickly across time zones and your body's natural rhythm gets thrown out of sync. While it usually only lasts a day or so, it can really put a damper on your travels – especially if you're trying to enjoy a relaxing vacation or your on an important business trip.

Your circadian rhythm, also known as your internal clock, regulates your sleep and wake times. If your internal clock gets jostled by switching time zones quickly and experiencing drastic changes to the amount of light you are exposed to at various hours of the day, you might also experience changes to your body temperate, mood, and hormones.

Symptoms of jet lag can include fatigue, insomnia, headache, difficulty concentrating, 'brain fog', gastrointestinal distress, and lack of appetite. Jet lag is also known to always be worse when you travel west to east.

Give it enough time and your body will naturally adjust to its new time zone, but to hasten the process, there are a few things you can try to get yourself to adjust to a new schedule more quickly and with far fewer jet lag symptoms. Join us as we discuss a few simple techniques and tips that will help you get over that nasty jet lag hump with quickness.

Welcome back to Around The Globe, today on the channel we are going to check out the 11 HACKS to survive long-haul flights! Thanks to the miracle of human flight, we can now fly direct from Newark, New Jersey, to Singapore in just under 19 hours. That also means people spend nearly an entire day of their lives off the ground, in cruising altitude limbo, only to land with the kind of jet-lag that eclipses exhaustion. For any serious traveler, long-haul flights are a necessary evil. How do they do it? Here, 12 tips for surviving—even enjoying—a day in the air.

Buy your ticket as early as possible. Waiting and hoping for that $20 price drop, more often than not, is not worth the trouble. Not only does buying early give you peace of mind in the weeks and months leading up to your departure, it increases the likelihood that enough seats remain open for you to pick where you want to sit—whether you prefer to cuddle up to a window, have easy access to the aisle, or stretch your legs in an exit row. Wait until the last minute and chances are good that you (and your elbows) will be sandwiched into a dreaded middle seat. Frequent flier? The time to cash those miles in on an upgrade is now. Wear your most comfortable outfit. That fitted blouse and skin-tight pair of jeans might make you feel like you’re 20 again, but trust us—after sitting (and attempting to sleep) in them for 15 hours, you’ll never want to look at that outfit again. When it comes to long-distance travel, stick to a “comfy-chic” dress code of neutral, loose-fitting layers you can move around in. Besides keeping cozy on a flight, you’ll also guard against deep vein thrombosis—a serious condition that’s aggravated when you sit in cramped positions for long periods of time. There you are, ready to jet off on your big trip... Feeling like you're going to conquer the world... Planning out the first few days of your dream vacation... Or preparing for that important business meeting... Then you arrive and it hits you... You feel lethargic... unmotivated... and a little disoriented... You're experiencing jet lag!

Jet lag occurs when your internal body clock doesn't match the time outside... It is caused by flying rapidly through different time zones... In extreme cases, it can last for several days... But fear not... we've got a few tips to help you leave jet lag behind... Now sit back, relax, and enjoy!

There are a few things you can do before you leave that can really help...
Avoid any wild parties the night before. A hangover will make jet lag worse.
Start drinking plenty of water, as dehydration can amplify jet lag's effects...
Keep your immune system strong. A healthy body is a happy body...
Book a window seat. You can place a pillow on the window to sleep more easily...
Avoid the back of the plane. The extra turbulence here makes it harder to sleep.
Try to book a flight arriving during daylight hours...
Sunlight helps you adjust more quickly to a new time zone...
Be sure to load some relaxing music onto your phone...
And pack some sunglasses you can hide behind for the first few days...

Now, some tips you can use in-flight to help prevent jet lag on arrival...
Keep drinking water...
Pro tip: Bring an empty bottle and fill it up after you're through security...
Don't overdo it on the free alcohol... you'll pay for it later...
Get some sleep. Don't spend the whole time watching in-flight movies...
Move around to keep circulation flowing. It's been proven to reduce jet lag...
Don't eat during the flight. When you eat again your body clock will be reset...
It's an old flight attendant trick that's now backed up by science...

Once you've arrived, there are a few more things you can do to help adjust...
Drink plenty of water... (Are you noticing a trend?)
Fall into step with the routines of your new destination...
Eat when they eat...
And go to sleep when it's bed time...
If you really must take a nap, be sure to set an alarm...
And don't sleep for more than an hour during the daytime...
Take a walk in the sunlight... this will revitalize you and help you adjust...
Find some time in your schedule to exercise...
You will feel good because of all the endorphins being released...
And you'll find it easier to fall asleep at night...
Eat a protein-rich breakfast for the first few days...
You'll feel more alert and energetic...
And it lets your body know that you are on a new schedule...
In the evening, eat foods high in the amino acid tryptophan...
These include carbs, such as pasta, rice, and potatoes...
And lean meats, like chicken and fish...
A carb-heavy meal is perfect for preparing your body to relax and go to sleep...
Once you have fallen asleep, be careful if you wake up during the night...
If possible, stay in bed and avoid turning on the lights...
It's also recommended to avoid taking sleeping pills...
They won't help you beat jet lag, you'll just feel drowsy when you wake up...

There are also a few unorthodox cures you might want to consider...
Walking barefoot on the ground outside to earth yourself...
This is said to connect your energy back to the earth...
Another cure involves shining a bright light on the backs of your knees...
Receptors in the knee pick up the light and signal your brain to wake up...
