Get to Know Minsk

Belarus is slowly opening up to Western tourists, with a visa waiver program that now gives you 30 days visa-free entry to the country as long as you arrive and depart by air from Minsk International Airport. Minsk has a lot to offer. It's like an alternate reality, a what-if for its neighboring countries. Officially Europe's last dictatorship, it's spotlessly clean, very safe and truly fascinating for anyone who wishes they'd had a chance to peek behind the iron curtain back in the 80s.

We were quite taken with the city on our last visit there and it's definitely worth a few days on a longer trip in Eastern Europe. In this video we visit the main sights and have a little fun along the way.

???????? MINSK, BELARUS | Europe's Most UNDERRATED City? | MINSK First Impressions

*I have a new WEBSITE! Head over to for Travel, Digital Nomad and Teaching blog posts incorporating video, text and photography, purchase my Teaching Online Ebooks (also at take advantage of my affiliates and even book an English lesson with me at ???????? MINSK, BELARUS - Welcome back! If you saw the last video, you'll know I ended up stranded in Sweden after leaving Serbia (due to the global pandemic). I had to find a new place to live. That place was Minsk, the capital of Belarus!

I had always planned to visit Minsk for a brief visit. Previously, I had been to other ex-Soviet countries such as Kazakhstan, Kygryzstan, Moldova and Ukraine so I was excited to see what Belarus had to offer. Many have preconceptions of ex-Soviet countries that they are a) Russia and b) grey and miserable, full of Soviet architecture.

In this video I cover some of my first impressions of Minsk in relation to architecture and people as well as checking out some of the sights such as the Bolshoi Theatre, the National Library and even the former home of Lee Harvey Oswald. But the main message of the video is around hope, We are all in a difficult place due to the pandemic. We have to have hope that we will get out the other side.

An important note - at the time of filming there were no restrictions in relation to quarantine, lockdown or self isolating. The only recommendation is social distancing. Despite this, I am generally home 6 days out of 7 working with one trip to the shop or a short walk every day. I get that many of you are in quarantine but felt it was important to show some normality and hope in my videos!

MUSIC - (all Epidemic Sound)

Jailed & Deported?! (Welcome to Europe's hardest-to-visit country) ????????

After a few great weeks of exploring Poland & Slovakia, I decided to head east to my next destination: the mysterious nation of Belarus.

Long having been essentially closed to tourism due to its rigorous visa policies, the country opened its borders a few years ago through its visa-on-arrival program. This program allows citizens of select countries to visit Belarus for up to 30 days without a visa, as long as they arrive into and depart from Minsk National Airport.

Having met all conditions and requirements for the visa-on-arrival, I booked my ticket and headed to Minsk. Unfortunately, recent political tensions between Canada and Belarus (following the controversy over the latter's election results) made travel here impossible for me. Upon arrival, I was interrogated for two hours, my bags searched, and my presence treated with suspicion. Ultimately, it was explained to me that I would be deported, as an act of political retaliation due to Canada's imposing sanctions on Belarus earlier in the summer.

I was taken to the airport jail, and told I would need to spend the next 24 hours there until a flight back to Poland was available. Wanting to avoid the discomfort of spending the night in a very smelly Belarussian jail, I used my cell phone (which I was allowed to keep) to book the cheapest flight I could find to the neighboring Ukraine, which allowed me to leave Belarus that evening.

After 111 countries, I could not believe that this happened to me, as I've never had any problems being a tourist in any other nation on Earth. This experience was proof that political tensions can sometimes have political repercussions for their citizens.

Despite not being able to explore this mysterious country, I do plan to return someday and see what Belarus has to offer. Was I angry? Not at all. It's politics. I was treated with kindness and respect by every official that I encountered during my time in Belarus (indeed, many seemed to regret the fact that they had to deport me), and I can't wait to explore this country in the future.

Putovanje u nepoznato: Minsk
