Esztergom (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Esztergom in Hungary.
Esztergom is a city located west of the Hungarian capital of Budapest on the Slovakian border where, situated on a huge rock, there is a Basilica and castle. This, ‘Hungarian Rome’, lives completely in the shadow of the Catholic Church as the centre of Hungary and residence of the country’s Primas, an area that has been inhabited since the Prehistoric Stone Age. On April 23, 1822, the foundation stone of the Basilica was added to earlier church buildings after Vienna’s Imperial Court helped return the city’s archbishops back to power. At its consecration on August 31, 1856, Franz Liszt performed a specially-composed festive mass in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph. Everything is based upon its dimensions: a hundred and seven metres to the dome, a hundred and eighteen feet long and forty eight feet wide. It can accommodate a congregation of eight thousand and even today each detail of this monumental building radiates both awe and pomp. The former ecclesiastical and secular centre of Stephan’s Empire has indeed survived the ravages of time..

Gödöllöi Kiralyi Kastely (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Gödöllöi Kiralyi Kastely in Hungary.
Close to Budapest is Gödöllő Castle, once the favourite summer residence of Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary and Empress of Austria. It is a fairy-tale castle that is still as magical today as it was at the time of its completion in 1748. A magnificent staircase leads up to the Ceremonial Hall on the first floor which forms the centre of a symmetrical plan. There is a suite with a small dining room in which the closest members of the royal family dined. When architect Antal Grassalkovich first began to have the castle built he also designed the palace garden which was typical of the aristocratic taste of that time, an English garden with tree lined avenues and lawns. Queen Elizabeth played a significant role in the balance of power between Austria and Hungary. She loved Hungary and its people, felt at home in the castle and in the Writing Room committed herself to learning the Hungarian language from the most learned tutors of that time. The imperial architecture of Gödöllö Palace, the world’s second largest Baroque castle after Versailles, became the model for many subsequent Baroque palaces.

Koeszeg (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Koeszeg in Hungary
The strategic location of the city of Köszeg in the west of Hungary once determined its fate. : Today Köszeg is one of Europe’s most beautiful castle cities and in the Old Town, the Gate Tower and Captain’s Residence of the main square immediately indicate the city’s long history. The whole of the main square is completely framed by picturesque Baroque buildings and their colourful facades. Köszeg survived World War II undamaged and so it is not surprising that it is known as the most beautiful city in the region. With its gate-tower, the imposing Heroes Gate provides access to the Main Square. Although built in 1932 to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the Turkish Siege, it blends in perfectly with the surroundings. For the Austrian Habsburgs, Köszeg acted as a bulwark designed to defend Vienna from attack by the Turks, and it worked. The impressive remains of the Synagogue, built in 1859, are a reminder of the city’s former large Jewish community. Köszeg is a jewel of history, a fairy tale idyll!

Pecs (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Pecs in West Hungary.
Pécs is the largest city in West Hungary and European Capital Of Culture with more than a thousand years of history. From Illyrian and Celtic settlements grew the Roman city of Sopianae and in 1009 A.D. King Stephan founded the diocese of Pécs. At the same time he laid the foundation stone for the first Saint Peter Cathedral whose structure, over the centuries, has been re-built and transformed several times. The fascinating early Christian cemetery with its subterranean, artistically painted grave chambers, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Indeed, few Roman necropolis’ such as this exist outside Italy. The Pécs of today makes it easy to forget that in 1241 the then unprotected city was destroyed by the Huns, which led to the construction of the City Wall. In 1543 the Turks invaded without a struggle and remained for 143 years during which time they introduced mosques, minarets and baths. German, Croat, Roma and Jewish influences dominated the cityscape, a blend that eventually led to Hungarian Art Nouveau and Moorish-Oriental forms are very apparent on the still magnificent synagogues of the Jewish community. Pécs is a rich multi-cultural legacy of European history, a city without frontiers in which many indelible influences have made their mark.

Sopron (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Sopron in Hungary.
In 1921 the border city of Sopron agreed to remain part of Hungary, a fact still commemorated by way of its Fountain Of Fidelity and Marian Column. It is a small city with a long history and whose historic old town is home to Hungary’s most Gothic buildings and magnificent ancient structures. Scarbantia was what the Romans called this former village in their province of Pannonia, later developing it into a city of which many original elements have remained in tact. The later addition of a mediaeval city wall which followed typical Roman plans ensured the survival of the city. Due to a devastating fire in 1676, the city was subsequently rebuilt according to Baroque design. The view across the rooftops of the old town, the Church Of Mary and the narrow streets, is quite overwhelming, an historical work of art. Each corner of the main square shows something different, with the elegant County Authority House and its monumental column portico stealing the show. The mediaeval city wall mostly follows the oval town plan of Roman times, the exterior Barbakane looking particularly impressive. Today the city has become a Baroque gem with a mediaeval heart. Sopron, pearl of Transdanubia!

Parliament Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Parliament in Hungary.
In 1867, after many centuries of Habsburger rule, the kingdom of Hungary was finally acknowledged as an official State and a parliament was appointed. London's Houses Of Parliament served as the model for Budapest's new parliament building. The idea was to emphasise to the Hungarian people the positive way that both democracy and the monarchy could be part of the same political system. The magnificent shape of the Budapest Parliament is similar to a palace. Two bronze lions decorate the steps that lead to the main entrance of the splendid government building that symbolised the hopes of a new kingdom. With its 700 rooms and total floor space of 473,000 square metres, for many decades this was the greatest building in the world. And even with its powerful proportions, the Budapest Parliament radiates elegance and grace. At night this architectural symbol of the Hungarian people with its 100 metre high cupolas, lights up the capital and also the dark waters of the Danube.

Fertőd Esterházy kastély

Kroměříž (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Kromeriz in the Czech Republic.
The tranquil town of Kromĕříž in the southeast of today’s Czech Republic is a milestone of nineteenth century Habsburgian history. Kromĕříž Castle was the traditional summer residence of the bishops of Olomouc and became a key influence in the town’s cultural life. Typical statues and Baroque and Rococo figures adorn both the walls and niches of the arcades of the castle’s well-tended courtyard. An impressive staircase decorated with large figures leads to the second floor and the Picture Gallery which contains the Apollon And Marsyas by Tizian, one of the great masters of Venetian Renaissance. The Reichstag Hall is the castle’s largest room and is where the history of the nineteenth century comes to life. During the turmoil of the Bourgeois Revolution of 1848, Emperor Ferdinand The First fled from Vienna to Olomouc and the Austrian Reichstag met there and it was also where the first democratic constitution in Europe was discussed and the idea of All State power emanates from the people! Since 1998 the castle and its park and flower garden have been designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Kromĕříž Castle and gardens are among the most well preserved Baroque examples of a royal residence. Although architecturally in the Viennese style of the K & K monarchy they are notable as a fascinating symbol of democracy

Schloss Neuschwanstein (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy situated close to Castle Hoch-Schwangau where as a child the king had immersed himself in German mythology. The fairytale castle was seventeen years in construction and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood, a union of both castle and its surroundings. The dining room is full of paintings that depict scenes from Wartburg at the time of the legendary Singer War. The centre of the room is dominated by a massive table top made of gilded bronze, Siegfried and his fight with the dragon, good against evil. The Throne Hall is a most magnificent and impressive room, two storeys high with lateral rows of columns and a gilded apse which is reminiscent of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The monumental Singer Hall is the castle’s largest and most important room. It was built for the operas of Richard Wagner. The tall, wooden coffered ceiling features numerous images as well as the signs of the zodiac. The ballroom of the Wartburg is full of motifs of Parzival, Lohengrin and King Arthur and his Round Table. The castle absorbed vast amounts of money and created massive royal debts that finally resulted in tragedy. During the night of June 12th, 1886, Ludwig The Second was arrested, declared deposed and taken to Castleberg. Barely forty eight hours later he died at the age of forty under mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg. A royal legacy, Castle Neuschwanstein is now one of the world’s most famous buildings.

Trogir (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Trogir in Croatia.
The picturesque old town of Trogir in Croatia is situated on a small island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge and protected by walls and a fortress. In 380 B.C. Greeks from Issa settled there and founded the fortified city of Tragyrion. It was only under Croatian rule that the island fortress regained its former importance when, in 1107, it became a diocesan city and received municipal rights by King Koloman. At the south-western end of the island is the imposing Kamerlengo Fortress, former residence of the Venetian governor and his militia. High walls connect various towers from which there is a good view of the sea. Church steeples rise above the rooftops.as though to highlight the importance of religion during Venetian rule. Several coastal towns entered into agreements with Venice whose mighty fleet offered protection against pirate raids. In 1997 the entire old town was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site, a closely packed-together collection of residential buildings, churches, narrow streets and courtyards.Repeated hostilities of the Ottomans finally ended the heyday of this fine city but its former splendour has been well preserved and Trogir now serves as a priceless glance back into the Middle Ages.

In a suburb of Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, and located on the slopes of the Vitoscha Mountains, is the country’s most worshipped-in historic building, Boyana Church. It actually comprises three churches that over the centuries have grown into a single entity. The first building covers an area of six square metres and after two centuries, a further two storey high church was added. The adjoining third church followed in the nineteenth century and is a unique combination of various architectural epochs. The view of the western wall and circular ceiling of the Narthex, is quite breathtaking as they are completely covered with art. Restoration work has taken place for several years and since 2002 Boyana Church has been open to the public.

Pannonhalma (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Pannonhalma in Hungary.
The northern Transdanubian was once the golden triangle of trade and transport between Vienna and Budapest. On a three hundred metre high hill in the Bakony Mountains is the Benedictine monastery of Pannonhalma that symbolizes the Christianization of Hungary. The oldest section of the complex is the Santa Martin Basilica which was consecrated in 1225 and was gradually developed above previous buildings. Baroque stucco and classical elements decorate its interior as well as many works of art that date back to the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Viewed from the cloister, the Porta Speciosa is a work of art. In the thirteenth century the magnificent Late Romanesque step portal was built on what was once the entrance to a church and symbolizes one of the twelve ornamental gates of Jerusalem. By much hard work and devotion, over the centuries the monastery prospered and gained much respect. Today only a handful of monks live and work in the monastery, running a school and maintaining the buildings.

Buda Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Buda in Hungary.
Extending for nearly one and a half kilometres, the historic centre of Budapest and its impressive Royal Palace tower proudly over the banks of the Danube.Budapest’s castle district has developed into the Hungarian capital’s main attraction, most notably, Fishermen‘s Bastion that was built between 1890 and 1905. The greater part of the Gothic, Matthias Cathedral, dates back to the 19th century but of the 16th century buildings, only their foundations remain. Following its original construction in the 14th century, Matthias Cathedral became the setting of several royal coronations. Due to numerous military conflicts, the entire Gothic area of the city was destroyed. The buildings and facades that can be seen today belong mainly to the Hungarian Baroque era. Deep underground, a several kilometre long maze cuts through the city’s hill. The basements of many buildings are connected to this tunnel system, therefore allowing visitors easy access to a seemingly never-ending system of fascinating passages. The Turkish conquerors used these subterranean passages and caves, that were created among thermal springs and waterways, and extended them for military use. During the hours of evening, Buda’s streets and archways radiate a magnificent light that is a wonderful contrast to the wonderful ambience of this city during the day.
