Things to do in Gaborone Botswana 1 - Three Dikgosi monument

30 day challenge - day 13
Every cloud has a silver lining
After suffering in the heat, rain clouds gathered -hahahaha!!!! I'm laughing because I've referenced a book called 'When rain clouds Gather' by Bessie Head and the setting of the is Botswana....
Anyway, If you didn't get that it's okay.
I spent the cooler hours at the Three Dikgosi statue in Gaborone where entrance was free:) The only thing to worry you about visiting the monument is that it is run by Govt employees and thus it is mostly closed on weekends and the best time to visit is during weekdays.
Anyway, it's an interesting place that holds a bit of the History of Botswana.

Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Gaborone, Botswana

Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Gaborone, Botswana
Mokolodi Nature Reserve is a private not-for-profit game reserve in southern Botswana. Founded in 1994 by The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation, it is situated on 30 km sq. of donated land 10 km south of the capital Gaborone. The nature reserve is inhabited by a wide variety of indigenous African game, bird and reptile species, some of which are rare and vulnerable to the threat of extinction. The southern white rhinoceros herd at Mokolodi Nature Reserve is part of a national breeding programme which contributes to the re-building of the national herd in Botswana.

Environmental and conservation education are the key objectives of The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation. The nature reserve hosts children from across Botswana, some of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds. The fee-based activity and accommodation services offered to the public by Mokolodi Nature Reserve support the Foundation's charitable objectives, to present the children of Botswana with the opportunity to embrace the natural world and to promote the wider protection of Botswana's natural environment.

The park contains many species of wildlife such as southern white rhino, South African cheetah, mountain reedbuck, South African giraffe, zebra, red hartebeest, sable, gemsbok, elephant, kudu, impala, spotted hyena, leopard and waterbuck. The park is developed as a game sanctuary with an extensive network of paths, which permits viewing the wild life at close quarters. The park administration is planning to expand its limits of conservation area up to the Lion Park.

First hours in Gaborone, Botswana

30 day challenge day 12

This was a hard day. Even thinking back to that day makes me tired. it was like 40 degrees.
I walked through the streets of Gaborone shielding myself with the buildings.
It started when I forgot to pick my change and had to wait around the bus rank for two hours. Then I got my directions mixed up and I went to the other side of the town to parliament instead of going to the three kings monuments. Then I passed my bus stop my 3 kilometres and had to wait for another kombi to drop me at the right place. And that was before I bought the Apple drink.

I picked the month of January to travel to Botswana. Summer.
Well I hope that this video is a good potrayal of how helpless and overwhelmed I felt that day.

Ker & Downey Botswana - Young Explorers - Family Safari - Snap shot (Official video)

Full length video available here -

The Young Explorers safari is a specially designed safari which offers families the opportunity to discover the wonders of the African wilderness - together. One of the special attractions of this safari is its exclusivity. Each family has the use of the Footsteps Camp a private six-bedded camp, a professional guide, personal chef, waiter, housekeeper and dedicated Mokoro guides. It literally allows guests to explore the bush at their leisure, while never losing sight of the fact that being in the wilderness is also about having fun!

The Young Explorers’ emphasis is on learning how to track game - both on foot and in 4x4 safari vehicles. We also teach children how to make small animal traps and how to start a fire from nothing more than two sticks. The children learn how to: recognise different animal spoor; identify a range of birds; try their hand at poling a Mokoro (subject to water levels); drive a game drive vehicle; fish; and shoot an air rifle at tin cans. On completion of the safari children receive a Young Explorers certificate, t-shirt and cap.
