Falkland Islands - wildlife and heritage

Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife, history and cultures of the Falkland Islands. This UK Overseas Territory is a treasure trove of natural history, with commerson dolphin, enormous elephant seals, penguins and some of the largest albatross colonies on Earth. We follow Charles Darwin's footsteps across the Falklands (for he spent twice as long here as he did in the Galapagos), we find striated caracaras - the most southerly bird of prey. These extraordinary raptors stole items from Charles Darwin and mugged presenter Stewart McPherson whilst filming! While many of the islands of the Falklands archipelago have been impacted by mankind, we visit an island with intact tussock vegetation which enables perhaps the greatest natural wonder of the Falklands; thousands of sooty shearwaters, which return back to their nests en-mass each evening.

This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

Falkland Islands | A Journey to the Bottom of the Earth

Come along on a journey to the bottom of the earth on my two week trip to the Falkland Islands. I assembled this video to show you what I saw and hopefully, I can make you feel, at least a little bit, the way I did when leaving the Falklands.

And for those of you who might not know that much about the Falkland Islands, I also added a real brief history of the islands and a little bit about the Falklands War.

The Falkland Islands are one of those rare places left where you can escape the modern world. Located 300 miles to the east of the bottom tip of South America. Their remote location has left the Falklands a place for one of a kind wildlife encounters.

Of all the places we’ve visited in recent years the Falklands are unlike any of the others – and I think that is was what I grew to love about the Falklands the most.

Falkland Islands: Paradise Rediscovered

From Magellanic penguins to military history! The Argentines call it Islas Malvinas. To the British, this south Atlantic archipelago is known as the Falkland Islands. While it’s the southern-most point of South America, the Falklands are a bastion of British culture and traditions. Located about 400 km northeast of Tierra del Fuego, the Falklands are known for their wildlife (penguins and bird species are plentiful) as well as their dramatic history.

Giant Albatrosses in the Falkland Islands (Antarctica Travel Vlog Ep17)

The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) are the last stop on my Antarctic journey. The sweeping shorelines are nesting grounds for black-browed albatrosses and imperial shags.

I am so excited to see the islands but feel bittersweet knowing I’ll soon be saying goodbye to our polar expedition ship “the Vavilov”, its crew, and all the new friends I’ve met onboard.

I don’t know if words can explain the joy I felt being at the bottom of the Earth. Going to Antarctica was a trip of a lifetime for me and a dream for many years. Thank YOU for coming along!

South Georgia - wildlife and heritage

Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife of South Georgia, a UK Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. It is a rugged, rocky isle, but home to some of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. Colonies of over half a million king penguins congregate on its shores, along with millions of fur seals, elephant seals, albatrosses and petrels. The island harbours such concentrations of wildlife because, unlike Antarctic, South Georgia is not surrounded by ice during winter. An ambitious rodent eradication project has been undertaken, and it is hoped that South Georgia may harbour even greater numbers of animals in the future.

This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

Falkland Islands - Wildlife and Landscapes

I've just spent the past 4 months living in the Falkland Islands. It was an incredible experience but the highlight of the trip was definitely the amazing wildlife and landscapes the islands have to offer. In my attempt at a BBC Planet Earth styley trailer I made a film in hope to capture the Islands diversity.

Best Places: The Falkland Islands and their wildlife

We have reached the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) on our way to the Antarctic. We landed in Stanley, New Island, West Point Island, Carcass-Island and Sounders-Island. In the short excerpt from my Antarctic film I show some special animal shots of albatrosses, Rockhopper Penguins, Magellanic Penguins, Gentoo Penguins and of course the impressive King Penguins. Because all these animals live well protected on the Falkland Islands. With comments in German. More about it also in German (travelogue and numerous pictures) at

Love the Falkland Islands

The Falklands archipelago is teeming with wonders of nature and wildlife; an unpolluted environment with fantastically clear blue skies, seamless horizons, vast open spaces and stunning white sand beaches. So many reasons to Love the Falklands

Visit the Falkland Islands - Bleaker Island

Situated toward the Southeast of East Falkland, Bleaker Island is a small working organic sheep and cattle farm. The Island itself is roughly 12 miles long, 1 mile at its widest and fairly flat making it an ideal location for clients looking for easy walks with a wealth of diverse accessible wildlife in a relatively small area.

There are 8,000 breeding pairs of King Cormorants close to the main settlement where you can while away the hours observing the young honing their flying skills.
To the North of the island, you can find Sandy Bay home to approximately 3,000 breeding pairs of Gentoo penguins.
Wading through the dense tussac grass at Long Gulch, there’s a small Southern Rockhopper penguin colony (~750 breeding pairs). The habitat also plays host to the endemic Cobb’s Wren, Grass Wren, and of course Tussac birds.
