About Stanley: Stanley (/ˈstænli/; also known as Port Stanley) is the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2016 census, the city had a population of 2,460. The entire population of the Falkland Islands was 3,398 on Census Day on 9 October 2016. Stanley is represented by five of the eight elected members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, Stacy Bragger, Barry Elsby, Mark Pollard, Roger Spink and Leona Vidal Roberts. An elected Town Council of Stanley existed from 1948 to 1973. On 14 June 2022, Stanley received letters patent, formally awarding it city status. // The Falkland Islands (/ˈfɔː(l)klənd, ˈfɒlk-/; Spanish: Islas Malvinas ˈizlaz malˈβinas) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 mi (480 km) east of South Americas southern Patagonian coast and about 752 mi (1,210 km) from Cape Dubouzet at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, at a latitude of about 52°S. The archipelago, with an area of 4,700 sq mi (12,000 km2), comprises East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands. As a British overseas territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, but the United Kingdom takes responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The capital and largest settlement is Stanley on East Falkland. Controversy exists over the Falklands discovery and subsequent colonisation by Europeans. At various times the islands have had French, British, Spanish, and Argentine settlements. Britain reasserted its rule in 1833, but Argentina maintains its claim to the islands. In April 1982, Argentine military forces invaded the islands. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

FIGAS - FALKLAND ISLAND GOVERNMENT AIR SERVICE

The Falkland Island Government Air Service (FIGAS) is an essential air transportation service that plays a vital role in connecting the remote communities and providing essential services to the Falkland Islands. Operating since 1948, FIGAS is the lifeline of the archipelago, serving approximately 2,500 residents spread across the scattered islands.

FIGAS operates a fleet of aircraft, including Britten-Norman Islanders and Pilatus Brittain-Norman BN-2s, which are specially designed to handle the challenging weather conditions and short runways commonly found in the Falkland Islands. These versatile aircraft allow FIGAS to access even the most remote and isolated destinations, ensuring that nobody is left behind.

One of the primary purposes of FIGAS is to provide critical transportation for the islanders, including medical emergencies, patient transfers, and scheduled flights for local residents. For medical emergencies, FIGAS offers a rapid response service, enabling patients to access the necessary medical care in a timely manner. This is particularly important given the limited healthcare facilities available in the Falkland Islands.

In addition to medical services, FIGAS also contributes significantly to the islands' economy by facilitating a wide range of activities. The service is instrumental in supporting the fishing industry, which is a vital source of income for the Falkland Islands. FIGAS airlifts fishermen, along with their catch, from remote locations, ensuring that fresh produce is transported promptly to market.

Furthermore, FIGAS caters to the needs of tourists visiting the Falkland Islands. Tourism is a growing industry, with visitors arriving from all over the world to explore the majestic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and unique cultural heritage. FIGAS offers sightseeing flights, enabling tourists to experience the breathtaking beauty of the islands from the air, providing an unparalleled perspective of this remote and captivating destination.

Safety is of paramount importance to FIGAS, and the service is committed to maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety. The pilots undergo rigorous training and are experienced in flying in challenging weather conditions. Additionally, the aircraft are meticulously maintained to guarantee their reliability and performance.

In conclusion, the Falkland Island Government Air Service (FIGAS) is an essential lifeline for the Falkland Islands, connecting remote communities, providing critical medical services, supporting the fishing industry, and facilitating tourism. The dedicated team at FIGAS ensures that the archipelago's residents and visitors have access to reliable and efficient air transportation, fostering development, and enhancing the quality of life on these remote islands.
