How British Are THE FALKLAND ISLANDS?

Red Telephone Booths? English Speaking? Fish 'n Chips?

That's the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) in a nutshell -- THEY ARE SHOCKINGLY BRITISH, more so than anywhere I've been in Great Britain. I cannot tell you how bizarre it is to be 8,000 miles away from the U.K., and feel this strong of a British influence in the small archipelago called the Falkland Islands.

As many of you may know, the history of the Falkland Islands is complicated and bloody... The sovereignty of the islands is part of an ongoing dispute between the U.K. and nearby Argentina, as it was fought out over a brutal 10-week war in 1982, which ultimately led to Argentina surrendering. The conflict still exists today, more than you might imagine.

I made this video to teach you a little about the history of the Falkland Islands, as well as show you some things I've discovered and learned over the last 3 days I spent here with Hurtigruten. Have I mentioned that the nature and wildlife in the Falkland Islands is breathtaking?!

Just out of curiosity -- did you already know about the British influence of the Falkland Islands? Or is this all news to you?

Falkland Islands | A Journey to the Bottom of the Earth

Come along on a journey to the bottom of the earth on my two week trip to the Falkland Islands. I assembled this video to show you what I saw and hopefully, I can make you feel, at least a little bit, the way I did when leaving the Falklands.

And for those of you who might not know that much about the Falkland Islands, I also added a real brief history of the islands and a little bit about the Falklands War.

The Falkland Islands are one of those rare places left where you can escape the modern world. Located 300 miles to the east of the bottom tip of South America. Their remote location has left the Falklands a place for one of a kind wildlife encounters.

Of all the places we’ve visited in recent years the Falklands are unlike any of the others – and I think that is was what I grew to love about the Falklands the most.

For more info on the Falklands check out our blog post:

Webinar: Antarctica with Adam Walleyn

For our next instalment in our Dream Destinations Webinar series we venture off to the ‘Great White Continent’ of Antarctica. Referred to by many as the ultimate destination, this virtually untouched part of our planet offers some of the most magnificent settings and scenery anywhere on Earth. Join Adam Walleyn, a past master of the seas, as he takes us on a classic voyage from the southern tip of Argentina to the remote Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Shetlands and, finally, the Antarctic continent. The sheer scale of nearly everything in this region is grand, and complementing the astounding vistas are vast colonies of penguins, brash skuas, giant petrels, sheathbills, somnolent seals, feeding whales and a fabulous variety of albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters and diving petrels that all add life to the region’s stark and amazing beauty. This is bound to be one of our finest webinars yet and follows the exact same route as our special Rockjumper Antarctica Charter in November 2021. For those who have been before, this is sure to be a wonderful journey down memory lane, while for those who have yet to experience Antarctica this is a webinar not to be missed.

BRAZIL BEACHES | Buzios Beach Resort - What's the coldest beach?

What I love most about Brazil: beaches! Buzios beach resort is a short road trip from Rio de Janeiro, just over 100 miles/160 km. In Buzios there are 23 beaches, very different from each other. In this vlog, I'll visit some of my favorites to try to find out if the water temperature really varies. The southside beaches receive the cold stream from Antarctica while the northside beaches receive the warm stream from the Equator.

All locations in this vlog:

0:40 - Geriba beach
4:08 - Ferradura beach
6:36 - Mirante do Forno
6:50 - Praia da Foca
7:19 - Mirante Joao Fernandes
9:54 - Joao Fernandes beach
11:42 - Armacao beach
12:01 - Ossos beach
12:19 - Azeda beach
14:14 - Porto da Barra, Manguinhos

To understand more about this beach resort, watch my first vlog in Buzios ►
In this trip to Brazil, I also visited Cabo Frio, a nearby city ►

More details about the main locations in this Brazil travel vlog:

► Buzios: The official name of the city is 'Armação dos Búzios', but everyone just refers to it as Búzios. This is a beach resort in the state of Rio de Janeiro and a popular getaway for Brazilians and Argentinians. Primarily an unknown fishing village until the 1960s, it was made famous by French actress Brigitte Bardot.

► Geriba beach: One of the most famous beaches of Buzios it runs for 2 kilometers (1.24 miles). With waves and an active ocean, it's perfect for surfing and wind sailing. It is surrounded by inns, bars, and restaurants and is a favorite of Brazilians.

► Ferradura beach: A modest beach with plenty to do. Calm waters entice families to spend the day and with plenty of stalls to service your hunger and thirst.

► Joao Fernandes beach: A beach with some of the calmest waters, it has easy access with plenty of accommodations on the surrounding hills. Any trip to Buzios should include a stop at this beach a 30-minute walking distance from town center.

► Porto da Barra: A complex of bars and restaurants on the shore perfectly situated to watch the sunset. Walk the jetty or stroll the beachside path and people watch closing out the day.

► WHO AM I?

I am a Brazilian-American journalist living in Florida. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged the life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer.

I created this channel to share the beauties of the world... stuff that for so long I only kept to myself. Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!

P.S.: The guy who occasionally appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American and is extremely shy, that's why he's behind the camera most of the time ;-)

Carols under the Whalebone Arch - Stanley, Falkland Islands (short selection)

On Christmas Eve, it is still light at 6pm in the Falkland Islands when people gather under the Whalebone Arch in Stanley to sing carols and, in recent years, also to hear singers from the Zimbabwean community - many of them are deminers, here to clear mines left by Argentinian forces during the 1982 War.

Enjoy a short selection from Christmas Eve 2018 ...
