How Dutch Gouda Is Made At A 100-Year-Old Family Farm | Regional Eats | Insider Food

Every year, 650 million kilos of Gouda cheese is produced in the Netherlands. Most of it is produced industrially, using pasteurized milk, but there are 280 farmers across the country still making raw-milk boerenkaas, or farmer's cheese. And there are only two farms that take their cheese to the next level, making Boeren Goudse Oplegkaas, or aged artisanal Gouda, a special type of raw-milk farmhouse cheese that must weigh at least 20 kilograms, must age at least two years, and can be made only in the summer with cattle grazing in the Green Heart region, between the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht.

We met with cheesemaker Marije Van der Poel, who lives on an island in the village of Rijpwetering in South Holland with her husband, Hugo, and their three children and makes 15 wheels of aged artisanal Gouda every day at the back of their house.

Herring is a small fish that is very popular among Dutch people. It is basically raw fish, dipped in raw onion and pickle. This video is about how to eat herring properly. There is a lot of Amsterdam Street Food to experience as you explore Amsterdam. One of the most popular options are available from the many fish stall which you’ll encounter throughout the main cities. How to eat herring in Holland? There are three ways to eat herring in Holland.
1: By the tail or “stert” which is the whole fish dangled above the mouth by the tail, typical in the Hague and Rotterdam
2: Cut into small pieces and eaten with a stick with a Dutch flag, typical in Amsterdam
3: For beginners, the best way is to have the herring in a soft white bread roll

The Herring Stall - Holland Holiday

A very populair fish in The Netherlands is herring. Especially salt(y) herring. Obviously for sale in a fish shop, but also in the typical Dutch herring stall in the street.
The conservation of this fish was invented by a Dutch fisherman in 1380.
First a part of the guts and the gills of the herring are removed, except for the pancreas. The pancreas ripens the herring by fermentation. The video shows you the pancreas. It is decisive for the taste and fat content. Formerly the herring was covered with salt and stored in barrels for conservation. Today the herring is conservated in the freezer.
In the fish shop or the herring stall they remove the pancreas, head and bone and the rest of the guts.
Traditionally you eat herring in one piece, holding it by the tail and then biting it off. But you can also get it in pieces or on een a sandwich.
Herring is usually served with onions and pieces of sour pickle. But of course as you like it.
Bon appetit!

Tasting Authentic Dutch Food | Zandvoort, Netherlands

Ever wondered what authentic Dutch food is like? We spent the last bits of 2021 in the Netherlands, where we went to the town of Zandvoort one day - to a small shop owned by a relative of Neil's to be precise - to taste some authentic Dutch food: stroopwafels (stroop waffles) and poffertjes!

In this travel vlog, we take you along to Original Stroopwafel, the shop in Zandvoort, Netherlands, where we sampled these authentic Dutch delicacies. As you will see, we decided to taste both the stroop waffles and the poffertjes.
