FOGAMA'A- HIKING TO HIDDEN BEACH- AMERICAN SAMOA

We've gathered a few friends to join us on our hike to FOGAMA'A (or as we like to call it HIDDEN BEACH) and we're inviting you to come along also.

A quick, but moderately challenging 0.5 mile hike into a volcanic crater and through a banana plantation takes you to the top of a staircase, leading down to the most pristine and magical beach on Tutuila.

American Samoa is full of beautiful beaches, incredible trails, and breathtaking views, but we've got to say that Fogama'a is our favorite. There's just something about this place that makes us fall in love with it again and again, EVERY TIME we go back!

Go for an hour or pack a lunch and stay all day. However long you have, you'll enjoy every minute of it.

Make sure to check out the Guide to Hiking Fogama'a and lots of other resources for visiting and living in American Samoa at

Let us know where else you want us to show. I promise, we'll get to them ????

Fogama'a Bay, Vaitogi, American Samoa

Fagalua/Fogoma'a is just east of Fagatele Bay on Tutuila Island and is slightly larger at 0.46 square miles (1.2 square km). Fagalua and Fogama’a coves make up the inner, western portion of the entire bay area, which extends from Steps Point to Sail Point Rock. Like Fagatele Bay, Fagalua/Fogama’a was formed by a flooded volcanic crater and is surrounded by steep, forested cliffs.

HIKING to FAGATELE BAY | SNORKELING in the NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY of AMERICAN SAMOA

It's time for another AMSAMFAM ADVENTURE!

Today, we're heading out with some friends, to hike the jungle trail that leads to FAGATELE BAY, the only US NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY in AMERICAN SAMOA.

Fagatele Bay has always been a safe haven for marine animals, but in 1986 it officially became a protected area. Today, you might see anything from parrotfish to manta rays to dolphins. Between the months of June-October, if you listen very carefully while under the water, you might even hear a humpback whale's song, as it makes its way south, just off-shore.

Thanks for watching and for your continued support! Please make sure to give us a thumbs-up if you like our videos and don't forget to subscribe and hit that bell, so you'll be notified each time we release a new video.

FAGA'ALU WATERFALL | One of AMERICAN SAMOA'S BEST HIDDEN TREASURES

AMSAMFAM is getting back out and showing you one of AMERICAN SAMOA'S best waterfalls- FAGA'ALU WATERFALL.

We drive through the village of Faga'alu, past the LBJ Tropical Medical Center, and park just outside of an active rock quarry. We walk through the quarry without a problem and start our slippery, sometimes precarious, hike through the tropical rainforest to find our very own island waterfall.

The water is cool and refreshing and we scale the side of the mountain for some heart pumping cliff jumping. The boys are fearless, but Nate and I discover that the pool is a little shallow for us adults to be jumping from that high.

If you can handle the narrow trail and steep drop-off, you will be rewarded with a true Tropical Paradise all to yourself!

Let us know if you've been to Faga'alu Falls. After shooting this video, we learned that you can actually hike beyond this waterfall and find multiple others, but I think we might leave the kids home for that adventure.

Have you been to Faga'alu Falls? Tell us if you've ever hiked up past these falls or if you know someone who has. We'd love to hear a first-hand account.

Thanks for watching and please make sure to give us a thumbs-up if you enjoyed this video!

HIKING the WWII HERITAGE TRAIL in AMERICAN SAMOA | HOMEMADE ICE CREAM at SAMU'S

We're ready to head back to the rainforest trails of AMERICAN SAMOA. Come along with us as we hike the WWII HERITAGE TRAIL.

The trail is rated as challenging, our guess is because of some steep ascents/descents, as well as lots of roots and boulders to make your way over. It may be challenging, but it is definitely worth it!

We start this through-hike in Gataivai, heading up to Blunt's Point, then keep going past the second gun. The trail was more overgrown than we're used to seeing, but still easy to find. With plenty of World War Two landmarks along the trail, this is as much an education in history as it is a great workout.

Thank you to everyone who has subscribed to our channel! Especially, everyone who participated in our LIVE video last week. We've received such positive responses and so much love.

As promised, we randomly chose a winner from everyone who commented during the LIVE. And our winner is... Westbrook Originals! Congratulations! Make sure to message us with your mailing address, so we can send your package full of snacks and treats from American Samoa.

Thank you again to everyone! Once we hit 10k subscribers, we'll go LIVE again, with another chance to win.

SLIDING ROCK TIDE POOLS | AMERICAN SAMOA

Today, we're taking advantage of the SUNSHINE and LOW TIDE by hiking out to SLIDING ROCK TIDE POOLS , in TAPUTIMU, AMERICAN SAMOA.

Millions of years ago, when our island was being formed, huge lava flows made their way to the ocean and left behind expansive cliffs.

High tides cover the area, while low tides expose the smooth black cliffs, leaving slippery flats and tide pools of all different sizes.

THANKS for following along on our adventures and thanks for the comments! We love to hear about your home village and suggestions for where we should go next.

Keep 'em coming!

ROPES, LADDERS, AND LOTS OF MUD | HIKING the MATAFAO TRAIL | NATIONAL PARK of AMERICAN SAMOA

Hiking the MATAFAO TRAIL has been on my bucketlist since we first moved to American Samoa. I always thought I would go without the kids, but we decided to give it a shot.

Matafao is the highest point on Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, and the trail is definitely difficult. Combine mud and a rainstorm with this already challenging and treacherous trail and that could be a recipe for disaster.

See how our adventure turns out and if we were able to reach the summit.

A great bug THANK-YOU to the National Park rangers who cleared the trail and installed ropes and ladders to make the trail passable!!

Tofa Soifua.

SNORKELING IN FAGA'ALU BAY | A Surprising Jewel of American Samoa | Spearfishing

When you think of SNORKELING in AMERICAN SAMOA, most people don't picture diving into FAGA'ALU BAY.

So, many people are surprised when we tell them it's one of our FAVORITE SNORKELING SPOTS in this South Pacific US Territory.

Looking out across the bay, most people are struck by the view on land, but if you were to look down upon the bay from above or dive down and immerse yourself in the underwater world, you would see what has captured our hearts. Every time we explore these reefs, we see tons of fish, hundreds of coral heads, and a few sea turtles.

For now, come along with us and let us show you the magic of snorkeling in Faga'alu Bay in American Samoa.

As always, thanks for watching! Please make sure to subscribe and click that bell, so you'll be notified each time we post a new video.

FINDING LEONE FALLS | COOLING OFF AND CLEANING UP | SE'ETAGA BEACH | AMERICAN SAMOA

LEONE FALLS is a place that not many people have heard of and even fewer have been to, yet it's one of our new favorite places on the island!

Hidden behind AMERICAN SAMOA'S rainforested mountains is a cool oasis. Come along with us as we escape the summer heat with a short (though wild) hike back to a super secluded waterfall.

Then, see one of our favorite beaches to clean up and play, after a sweaty hike, at SE'ETAGA BEACH.

As with most beaches and waterfalls in American Samoa, please show respect and always ask permission to use the land. The people of American Samoa are incredibly kind and generous and all they ask is that visitors show respect and gratitude to enjoy their piece of Paradise.

SNORKELING IN FAGASA BAY | AMERICAN SAMOA

Dive into the warm waters of FAGASA BAY, one of AMERICAN SAMOA'S best snorkeling spots!

AmSamFam is taking you under the water, to see the beauty of American Samoa from a new angle.

Fagasa Bay is one of our favorite places to snorkel. The coral is thriving, the fish life is varied, and there's a great underwater tunnel for the braver souls to explore.

As always, please make sure to ask permission from someone is the village before jumping in, as a way of showing respect, and make sure to leave the beach and water cleaner than you found it.

Hike to Fogama’a beach

Fogama’a beach, also known as hidden beach or Larsen beach, is a beautiful beach tucked into Larsen’s Bay in the Southwest coast of Tutuila island in American Samoa. It’s a stunning and private beach but requires quite a hike to get there and back. Well worth the trip though. Music with permission from Larry Elefante. If you want to help, Venmo Bryno-dc.

AIRPORT BEACH | HIKING along the BLACK CLIFFS and BLOW HOLES in AMERICAN SAMOA

Get ready to get wet! We're dodging BLOW HOLES and CRASHING WAVES, as we take you to AIRPORT BEACH.

Airport Beach has provided many firsts for AmSamFam. It was our first explorative adventure in AMERICAN SAMOA, Hadley saw her first shark, Nate caught his biggest fish there, and so much more.

Most of the beaches and trails in American Samoa are closed on Sundays. Airport Beach is one of the few that are open all day, any day.

To get to Airport Beach, you'll follow the shoreline for about one mile. There's an actual trail for some of the way and along other stretches, you're left to meander along the black cliffs. It's impossible to get lost though, as long as you keep the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other.

The hike is in full sun, but if you've timed it right, the blow holes will offer cool relief from the hot sun.

Once you've reached Airport Beach, you'll notice old WWII pillboxes and a calm bay. Beyond the first sandy stretch, you'll see a second, shorter sandy beach, where the shoreline drops off more quickly- great for deeper snorkeling, while still being protected by the reef off-shore.

We could spend a whole day, taking our time along the hike and snorkeling, sun-bathing, swimming, and roasting lunch over a beach bonfire. On days when we want a quick adventure, we simply walk partway down, just enjoying the exploding blow holes.

Whether you have a whole day or just a couple hours, Airport Beach is an adventure that you can enjoy any time and any day of the week. Always remember, whatever you bring with you, please carry it back out.. maybe even bring an extra bag and pick up some marine debris on your way back out.
