DALAT - THE CITY OF FLOWERS | LITTLE PARIS IN VIETNAM
Dalat is somewhat of an anomaly in the hot, humid, jungle landscapes of Vietnam. Visitors could almost mistake the region for a European town thousands of miles away. Often nicknamed The City of Eternal Spring, Dalat has a temperate climate making it an ideal escape from the heat and humidity of other areas. This climate means that the area is ripe for growing plant species that would not survive in the rest of Vietnam such as strawberries plants, pine trees and artichokes.
The cool, comfortable climate is also the reason that the French first developed the area in the 1890s. Seeking an escape from the all-consuming heat and humidity of the south, French bacteriologist, Alexandre Dan Kia, originally proposed to establish the retreat in nearby Dan Kia. However, Etienne Tardiff suggested Dalat and building began in the early 1900s. Ernest Hebrard set out developing a real home away from home, the city was based largely on the French design and featured French style villas, hotels and boulevards, many of which still remain.
Dalat was fortunate enough to remain relatively untouched by the ravages of war. Its main involvement was in the Tet Offensive during which the Southern Vietnamese Military Police Units clashed with Viet Cong Troops resulting in the death of many soldiers. Thanks to its limited involvement in the war, Dalat has kept much of the French influence and architecture which gives it its European charm. Over time, this has been added to and developed by Vietnamese culture and now the European charm is paired with a distinctive Vietnamese Kitsch.
This unique combination is a big draw for domestic tourists and especially newlyweds with Dalat being known as the honeymoon capital of Vietnam. The city centre itself feels very urban and has undergone a lot of development, but the surrounding areas are still full of European charm with quaint cafes and small shops. The scenery outside of the main city is equally captivating with pine forests, hilly peaks, and still lakes. The more rural areas feature fabulous flower gardens, renowned coffee farms and patchworks of agricultural land. The cool climate and vast countryside make Dalat a great place to have a go at some outdoor sports and there are plenty of options to choose from.

Bước vào vườn hoa, trước mặt, sau lưng và hai bên du khách đâu đâu cũng toàn là hoa. Để tạo cho không gian tràn ngập hoa, trên con đường bạn đi, mỗi vuông đất đều có hoa. Hoa ở khắp nơi trong vườn hoa Đà Lạt
Dọc hai bên lối đi là hệ thống nước phun, nằm hững hờ trên lối đi dọc theo triền đồi là chiếc xe ngựa đầy hoa, những gánh hoa cũng để như ngẫu nhiên tạo nên một không gian lạ. .
Lối đi bên trong vườn hoa Đà Lạt. Ở đây có trên 300 loài hoa, trong đó có tới hàng trăm loài hoa như hồng, cúc, lay ơn, hoa lan, cẩm tú cầu, mimôda…nở quanh năm.
Vườn hoa hiện tại là nơi trưng bày về hoa lớn nhất và đầy đủ nhất của Đà Lạt với hàng trăm giống hoa khác nhau. Ngoài các giống hoa truyền thống mà du khách đã biết như Cẩm tú cầu, hồng, hồng ri, xác pháo, mimosa, tại vườn hoa còn có hàng chục giống hoa mới được du nhập vào Đà Lạt từ 10 năm nay như các loại cúc, hồng, đồng tiền, đỗ quyên, trà mi... Màu tím lãng mạn của hoa Pensee, đỏ rực của Xác pháo, mỏng manh của Forget me not … và nhiều loại hoa khác nữa quyến rũ du khách đến không ngờ.

There are a lot of names that people use to name Dalat: City of Thousands of Flowers, Land of Love, Sad City, Dream City, Peach Flowerland … Nature and people of Da Lat go to poetry, pictures, art, and the heart. But despite trying to describe, only when you set foot in this land, you have the feeling of your own about it.
Dalat is a city in Lam Dong province, located on the Lam Vien plateau, at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level with a natural area of 393.29 square kilometers.
With many beautiful landscapes, Dalat is one of the best destination in Vietnam. During the French colonial period, the Latin name Dat Aliis Laetitiam Aliis Temperiem means “for these people joy, for others the coolness”. Dalat is dubbed: flower city, love city, spring city, fog city.
As a Little Paris, Da Lat is romantic and poetic thanks to the cold at night, the fog in the early morning and the pine forests surrounding the city. This pine forest helps Da Lat cool more.

About Dalat city
Dalat, also Da Lat (Đà Lạt), located in the South Central Highlands of Vietnam, was originally the playground of the French who built villas in the clear mountain air to escape the heat and humidity of the coast and of what was then called Saigon (now) officially known as Ho Chi Minh City
Dalat is a mid-sized city that looks like a cross between Vietnam and the French Alps. Outside of the city centre, it is surrounded by a series of pine-covered hills, lakes, and higher peaks, making for some lovely scenery quite different from the rest of Vietnam.
Temperatures are pleasantly warm by day, and quite cool at night, down to perhaps 10 degrees Celsius. Be aware that during summer months, rain comes at least once a day and can sometimes dictate the mood and activities you are planning.
The city centre is quite small and feels very urban, concrete, and patches of streets and buildings are in disrepair or construction. However, outside of the small urban centre is a spacious landscape of well kempt and pretty hotels, cafes, restaurants, and lakes peppered among the rolling green hills and pine trees to offer tourists an escape from city life. Even further out from those are fields of fruits, vegetables, coffee, and canopied flower gardens that are harvested and exported across Vietnam. The tempo of life in Dalat is very relaxed, traffic is not frenetic, streets are spacious, and the local populace is friendly to foreigners.
Dalat is very much a niche tourism town, open to those seeking a respite from the heat of the rest of Vietnam, a change in scenery to lush pine forests and rolling hills, or those seeking world class golf. There is a steady flow during some parts of the year of tourist from all walks of life and places, small hotels, cafe's lining its streets and plenty of small shops offering anything from orchids to knitwear. The vast majority of visitors are Vietnamese, although plenty of Americans and Europeans find their way, either on short package tours, soul searching, or drawn by the scenery, vivid blue skies, fresh air, flower-filled parks, and local culinary treats. Dalat is a favourite destination for company weekend outings, family get-aways, and honeymooners. Most guidebooks for overseas visitors describe Dalat as a tourist town with a colourful approach to tourism.
Dalat is a very pleasant stop, on a north-south tour (or vice versa), or a pleasant outing from the heat of Saigon. For overseas visitors, it offers mostly a chance to cool down, observe some beautiful landscape and agriculture, view a bit of the French legacy, the Indochine legend and its momentous glories and the architecture untouched by the Vietnam conflict left behind,a unique place to enjoy the atmosphere of a unique country and its people.
Dalat is also surrounded by some of the best mountain biking, hiking and canyoning opportunities in Vietnam, with hills of coffee and tea plantations, which evoke images of the colonial hill stations of the north of India.
Dalat's high altitude (1500-2000m) and fertile landscape make it one of Vietnam's premier agricultural areas, producing varieties of fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee beans, and flowers that do not grow in the lowlands. In markets as far north as Hanoi and Hai Phong, vegetable and flower vendors will tout their made in Dalat produce.
