The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima ( or “Santuário de Nossa Senhora De Fátima” in Portuguese) is located in the small city of Fátima - Portugal. To give some perspective, it's roughly 1h30min north of Lisbon.
According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to three young pastors on six occasions in 1917. The first was May 13. (13 de Maio).

This is a video made during our trip to Fatima - Portugal, in a day trip back in October 2019.

❤️????For some people, it can be an emotional experience to visit Fatima. This was the case for Lia of Discovering Destinations. It was a very special and emotional day that brought her great memories from her childhood.

✨This video is dedicated to Uncle Claude. Always in our hearts ❤️❤️❤️

The Shrine at Fátima is one of the most important landmarks in Marian worship, drawing pilgrims from all over the world.

The location of the Shrine of Fátima, at Cova da Iria, had until 1917 been an unknown place in the municipality of Ourém, in the parish of Fátima. That year, a religious event changed its history and importance for ever, when three little shepherds, Jacinta, her brother Francisco and their cousin Lúcia, witnessed successive apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary. Initially looked at with suspicion by the Church, albeit cherished by the people, the phenomenon was not acknowledged by the Bishop of Leiria until 1930. From then onwards, the development of the village boomed, leading to Fátima being given town status, in 1977, and city status in 1997.

The world renown of the Shrine increased during the papacy of John Paul II, a confessed devotee of Our Lady of Fátima, who travelled there in 1982 to give thanks for having survived an assassination attempt the year before. In 2000, on his third visit to the site, he announced the beatification of Jacinta and Francisco, to whom the Vatican attributed the miracle of a cure.

The first apparition occurred on 13 May, followed by others on the same day of the ensuing months until October, and that is the day of the main celebrations in Fátima. One of the most important events is the Candle Procession, on the evening of 12 May, when thousands of candles held by the faithful filling the grand Shrine plaza lend a magic atmosphere of communion and religious devotion to this place. It is as important as the Farewell Procession on the 13th.

But every month, especially on the 12th and 13th, thousands of pilgrims come to Fátima guided by their faith. They set out from different parts of the country, many of them making the journey on foot, following rural lanes and tracks. In order to facilitate this movement, a set of four Fátima Ways – the Tagus Way, the Northern Way, the Nazaré Way and the Coastal Way - have been signposted and can easily be followed using the markers on the ground, even by those with little knowledge of the region.

Not even unbelievers can remain indifferent when confronted by the Shrine’s grandiosity, spirituality and symbolism.

As you enter the Prayer Area, at one end you will see the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima, with its tall 65-metre tower. In the centre is the Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and, on one side, the Chapel of Apparitions, exactly where Our Lady asked the little shepherds to build a chapel.

At the opposite end, the Most Holy Trinity Church – Lesser Basilica, inaugurated in 2007, is a modern piece of architecture, without intermediate supports and with a capacity for about 8,700 people. The design is by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis, with contributions by other artists, such as the Portuguese Álvaro Siza Vieira and Pedro Calapez. Outside, there is a Tall Cross in bronze by the German Robert Schad.

Sanctuary of Fátima - Portugal - Our Lady of Fatima

A look at the grounds of the Sanctuary of Fátima in Fatima, Portugal. A quiet Monday found the grounds very peaceful. We visited during the 100 year anniversary but not during one of the peak days.

One of only eight international Catholic shrines, it was a great day visiting the several locations in the city that celebrate the vision the 3 children saw in 1917.

Fatima - Portugal

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima (better known as the Sanctuary of Fatima), located in Cova da Iria, Fátima, Portugal, is one of the most important Marian shrines in the world.

In 1917, the year of the Soviet revolution, Jacinta Marto, Francisco Marto and Lúcia dos Santos, known as the three little shepherds, said they had witnessed six apparitions of Our Lady on May 13, .
In the essential part of the message, the apparition would have asked that the rosary be prayed every day, conversion, and penance.
In one of these apparitions, he asked to build a chapel in that place, which is currently the central part of the Sanctuary where an image of Our Lady of Fatima is displayed.
Over the years, the Sanctuary has been expanded, with two basilicas already existing, thus increasing the capacity of welcoming pilgrims in a covered area.

The Sanctuary of Fátima consists mainly of the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Rosary Hall / terrace, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and colonnades, retreat house of Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Rectory, retreat house of Our Lady of Sorrows and hostel For the sick, Pius XII and Paul VI Pastoral Center, as well as the vast Basilica of the Holy Trinity, inaugurated on 13th October 2007. The Lausperene Chapel ('Laus Perene' stands for Permanent Praise) (where it is permanently exposed The Most Holy Body of Christ in the Consecrated Host) and the Chapel of Reconciliation, dedicated to the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).

Our Lady of Fatima Sanctuary, Agroal Healing Springs, Portugal ????????

The Our Lady of Fátima Sanctuary in Fátima, Portugal is easily one of the world's most pilgrimaged sights. I was so happy to be able to visit the shrine.

Praia Fluvial do Agroal in Ourem is known for the therapeutic properties of the water for the treatment of skin problems (eczema, psoriasis, etc.). I didn't swim in the water though. I just put my legs in. There are restaurants, ice cream shops, cafes, and other little shops nearby where we stopped to eat mini clams :)

The Miraculous Story of Fatima, Portugal: Exploring the House of Lucia, Jacinta, & Francisco

The video you are going to watch might bring you into the atmosphere in which the little Shepherds lived.
Aljustrel is one of the places which composes the Parish of Fatima, and where the three Little Shepherds were born. Among the few houses that still remain from that period, even though restored, there are two which now belong to the Shrine and where the little Shepherds were born and raised. These houses deserve to be visited as they take part in the history of Fatima.
THE HOUSE OF THE SANTOS FAMILY:
It was built in 1885 and restored in 1987. Lúcia de Jesus, daughter of Maria Rosa and António dos Santos, was the youngest of six children. She was born in this house on March 22, 1907.
Lúcia died on February 13, 2005. She is buried next to Jacinta and Francisco, in the Basilica of the Rosary. At the age of 14 (after the death of her cousins Francisco and Jacinta), Lúcia was sent to Porto, to a convent school called Asilo de Vilar. In 1925, when she was 18, she chose the religious life and entered the Institute of S. Dorothea in Tuy and Pontevedra, Spain.
THE HOUSE OF THE MARTO FAMILY:
This house was built in 1888 and restored in 2000. Here Francisco and Jacinta, the children of Olímpia de Jesus and Manuel Marto, were born. They were the youngest of nine children.
Francisco was born on June 11, 1908. The spirit of love and reparation for the offenses against God was noticeable in his life.
He was a contemplative. He spent hours thinking about God.
He died in this house on April 4, 1919, at 11 years of age, victim of pneumonia.
Jacinta was born on March 5, 1910. She was full of the spirit of sacrifice. She offered everything as a sacrifice saying: Oh Jesus, it is for love of You and for the conversion of sinners, for the Holy Father, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Before she went to the hospital in Ourém, Our Lady appeared to her in this house and asked if she wanted to convert more sinners with the sacrifice of her sickness. She died at the age of nearly 10 on February 20, 1920 in the Estefânia Hospital in Lisboa. On May 13, 2000, John Paul II came to Fatima to beatify Francisco and Jacinta.
THE APPARITIONS OF THE ANGEL (Loca do Cabeço):
In the spring and autumn of 1916, the Angel of Peace' appeared to the three little Shepherds. In the first apparition he taught them the prayer, My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You.
I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love you.”
On the third apparition (the 2nd was at the 'Poço do Arneiro') the Angel held up a chalice and a host, prostrated himself in adoration of the Most Holy Trinity, and prayed with the three little Shepherds:
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore you profoundly, and offer you the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the Tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference with which He is offended. And through the infinite merits of his Most Sacred Heart and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.
After that, He gave them communion saying,
Take and drink the body and blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Make reparation for these crimes and console your God.
The second apparition took place at the back of Lúcia's family home in the summer of 1916. The Angel told them, I am the Guardian Angel of Portugal. Offer all that you do, to the Most High, as prayers and sacrifices.

Fátima - The Santuary Tour/Holy Place visiting our Lady Fatima, Portugal Europe by NL Travel Vlog

The Santuary of Fatima is known worldwide for the apparition and miracles history to a religious event in 1917, when 3 little shepherds name Jacinta, Lucia and Francisco witnessed the apparition of Virgin Mary. Apparition that was repeated several times. According to the 3 little shepherds, a beautiful woman dressed in white and enveloped in a light whiter than the sun descending on a bush, asked them to pray for peace in the world and to pray above all the rosary, being also known as Lady of the Rosary. During these apparitions, the Virgin Mary revealed messages, known as “the secret of Fatima”, which was kept private until 1940.
Popular belief and the Church's acceptance of this event was not easy at first, it was only in 1930 that the diocese of Fatima recognized the apparitions as a fact worthy of the miracle.
Since then, Fátima has become one of the most popular pilgrimage sites for Catholics around the world, receiving between 6 to 8 million of Pilgrims yearly.

Fátima is a city in the municipality of Ourém and district of Santarém in the Central Region of Portugal, with 71.29 km2 of area and 13,212 inhabitants (2021).The homonymous civil parish encompasses several villages and localities of which the city of Fátima is the largest.

The civil parish has been permanently associated with the Marian apparitions that were purportedly witnessed by three local shepherd children at the Cova da Iria in 1917. The Catholic Church later recognized these events as worthy of belief. A small chapel was built at the site of the apparition, now known as Our Lady of Fátima, beginning in 1918, and a statue of her installed. The chapel and statue have since been enclosed within the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, a shrine complex containing two minor basilicas. Associated facilities for pilgrims, including a hotel and medical centre, have also been built over the decades within and around the Sanctuary. The city has become an important international destination for religious tourists, receiving between 6 and 8 million pilgrims yearly.

Fátima, a journey to the altar of the world
Fatima the altar of the world
Celebrated its centenary in 2017, the Sanctuary of Fatima is one of the greatest references of the Marian cult, which pilgrims from all over the world attend.
The place where the Sanctuary of Fátima, Cova da Iria, stands until 1917 is an unknown place in the municipality of Ourém, in the parish of Fatima. In that year, a religious event changed its history and importance forever, when three pastoral children, Jacinta and her two cousins Francisco and Lucia, witnessed successive apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary.
In 2017 was celebrated the centenary of the apparitions with a vast program of events that included concerts, exhibitions, performances and had its highest point on 12 and 13 May in which the usual religious celebrations were attended by His Holiness the Pope Francisco.
