Kalsoy is the home of the Kallur lighthouse, probably the most beautiful place in the world.

Kalsoy is an island part of the Faroe Islands laying between Eysturoy and Kunoy. The only way to arrive there is through a ferry which departs from Klaksvik. The name Kalsoy means man island.

Despite our attempt at keeping our documentaries as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting video clips. Grindadráp
An extremely controversial topic that is closely tied to the Faroe Islands is the traditional Grindadráp. In a nutshell, it is a mass killing of pilot whales, a species of dolphins. Every year, around 700 dolphins are killed in these hunts. As everything happens out in the open, with the shore waters literally turning red, these killings get a lot of international (media) attention.

Frankly, it is extremely tough to separate ‚right‘ from ‚wrong‘ here. In the past, this subsistence hunting technique was vital for the survival of the local inhabitants with the meat being equally distributed among all islanders. As such, the Grindadráp always had an important social aspect, as the local community worked jointly together. There is no doubt that the centuries of hardship, living on a remote, wind-tossed island group, have ingrained the advantages of this hunting technique into the collective mind of the Faroese.

From an outside perspective, killing pilot whales in such numbers seems utterly pointless and cruel, especially as, today, there are sufficient alternative food sources. At the same time, one could ask if there is a moral difference between killing pilot whales, a species of least concern, compared to seals, sharks, moose or deer? Or compared to cows, pigs or chickens held in factory farming, which are killed in the millions, away from the public eye.

No person regularly eating meat is in any position to morally judge the actions of the Faroese.

However, one thing that personally bothers us, is that these killings are defended by calling it a ‚tradition‘. In our opinion, traditions are nothing intrinsically positive. Slavery was once a tradition. Burning widows on a pyre was once a tradition. And female genital mutilation is still a horrible tradition today. Therefore, continuing these mass killings simply because they are a ‚tradition‘ is not a good enough reason. Some traditions are not worth keeping.

Faroe Islands ???????? - Elduvík #faroeislands #scandinavia #faroeste

???? Subscribe: ???? Subscribe: Elduvík is located in the Funningsfjørður-inlet on Eysturoy's northeast side. The village which has a population of 12 is split into two parts by a small river Stórá. Visible from Elduvík is the nearby island of Kalsoy.

The village lies by the shore at the end of a long, lush valley surrounded by stunning mountains. West of the river is the old part of the village, where the colourful small houses surround the school and the church.

The church in Elduvík was inaugurated in 1951, although the churchyard has been used since 1926 to avoid the hassle of carrying dead bodies along the old village path to Oyndarfjørður.

STREYMOY | Faroe Islands by Drone in 4K - DJI Mavic Air 2

The Faroe Islands have been on my list for the longest time as a place to visit. After doing some research, I found that there was always something cool to do and see on each of the country's 18 island archipelago. One such island is Streymoy, which houses the largest portion of the Faroese population. This is also because the capital city of Torshavn is also located on this island.

Streymoy has such a versatile array of natural attractions from waterfalls, mountain cliffs, and sea stacks. The north of Streymoy sits the village of Tjornuvik. It features just a few homes, nestled in between a valley with the sea stacks Risin og Kellingin in the distance. Not too far away is the Fossa waterfall, the tallest in the Faroe Islands. Standing at 140 meters tall, it is even visible from the nearby island of Eysturoy.

Further inland, sits the small town of Saksun. The black sand beach of Saksun is perhaps the most popular attraction here, in addition to the turfed church of Saksun. The Saksun beach is nice to experience in low tide as the entire beach around is accessible around this time. The capital city of Torshavn is also located on the southeastern coast of Streymoy. Home to nearly 20,000 residents, it comprises about 40% of the Faroese population. The city is small and walkable, has an incredible old town, and very nice harbor area.

You can take buses around island as well. You can get a 7 day travel pass for a fixed rate (in addition to other day lengths). The buses all take card as well if the travel passes are not worth it for you in the long run.

Drone laws in Faroe Islands: In order to fly your drone in Faroe, you should have a A1/A3 certification in the OPEN category in any EU member state (I have one from Sweden). This allows you to fly (under certain restrictions) within other EU countries. The standard rules apply such as flying within visual line of sight, not flying at night, only 120 meters in elevation, and not over crowds or sensitive infrastructure. Furthermore, other restrictions may also be enacted by the Danish Transport Authority. Generally though, flights should not be taken with 150 meters of a village and anywhere that have signs posted forbidding drones.

Exploring Faroe Islands - Streymoy and Eysturoy

Streymoy and Eysturoy are the two largest of the Faroe Islands and it's hard to give them justice in just a single video. Exploring them fully would probably require weeks. Unfortunately, we only had a couple of days after being grounded by some heavy rain and therefore had to resort to exploring only the locations that we were interested in the most.
