Saint-Paul-de-Vence can be seen from afar, with its medieval appearance surrounded by ramparts, at the top of a hill between the Mediterranean and the Grasse Pre-Alps.

Many artists stayed there after the Second World War and brought an international reputation to the village.Today, the Maeght Foundation maintains the artistic vocation of the place.

It is certainly the most visited village in the hinterland of Nice and even one of the most touristic in France.

Located between Eze and Monaco, the town of Eze extends over three cornices with a drop of almost 700 m.

Eze Bord de Mer with its beach shaded by a maritime pine forest is home to many paths that wind between the Belle Epoque villas.

The narrow streets of Eze-Village are lined with old stately homes occupied by artists' or craftsmen's workshops and shops.

From the exotic garden, set in the ruins of a medieval fortress at the top of the village, the panorama extends beyond the Esterel massif. In winter, on a clear day, you can make out the Corsican mountains.

The Grande Corniche is a virgin space between sea and mountain. From this Mediterranean maquis, the gaze embraces the 360° landscape with, in winter, the snowy Mercantour, Italy and Saint-Tropez.

History:
The oldest traces of land use in the town date back to the Iron Age (around 400 BC) at Mont Bastide. Then the destiny of Eze is linked to that of Nice. In 1388, Eze was attached to the House of Savoy and was occupied by Turkish troops from Barbarossa for a few days in 1543. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the armies of Louis XIV destroyed the castle. Eze is attached to France in 1860.

During the Belle Epoque and then during the interwar period, tourists began to visit or stay in Eze. George Sand describes its tormented landscapes, Friedrich Nietzsche finishes his work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” there, Prince William of Sweden takes up residence at Château Eza from 1923 to 1953.

Today personalities from the artistic world regularly reside in the town. Bono of the group U2, Julian Lennon are among the best known.

Eze Village ???????? Inside the Most Beautiful Medieval Village on the Hills of Côte d'Azur | 4K Walk

The area surrounding Èze was first settled around 2000 BC as a commune near Mount Bastide. The area was then occupied not only by the Romans but also by the Moors, who held the area for about 80 years until they were driven out by William of Provence in 973.

The history of Èze became turbulent several times when French and Turkish troops seized the village under Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1543, and Louis XIV destroyed the walls surrounding the town in 1706 in the War of the Spanish Succession. Finally, in April 1860, Èze was designated as part of France by a unanimous decision of the inhabitants of Èze.

Èze has been described as an eagle's nest because of its location overlooking a high cliff at 427 meters above sea level on the French Mediterranean. An Egyptian cross inside the church suggests the village's ancient roots when the Phoenicians erected a temple there to honor the goddess Isis.

The charm of a village, The village of Grimaud combines the charm of Provence of yesteryear and the medieval stories kept secret by its Castle. Immerse yourself in the heart of the authenticity of Grimaud and go back the centuries along the flowery paths.

The monuments of Grimaud make you feel the past but not only... The cobbled streets, the stone walls tell stories that they are perhaps the last to know. It resonates with the secrets of Grimaud.

Lose yourself in the alleys, a thousand stories have happened there. It's up to you to imagine them.

Grimaud, in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, is a village proudly displaying the colors of Provence. A Provence that is part of a medieval atmosphere, with its houses, its alleys, its Castle... The latter is the best known of the monuments in Grimaud, but did you know that it was far from being the only heritage building?

When summer arrives, it brings with it the blooming bougainvillea.

And what a wonder! The buildings of the old village are then adorned with a tailor-made purple dress to decorate the doors and windows of the houses.

Some bougainvilleas even climb a whole section of the facade. They are looking for the sun, to sunbathe every time!

It is a beautiful shrub that is often found in the Mediterranean, it is rare to find it in colder regions because it does not resist frost (a bit like the inhabitants of the south, it must be admitted).

A village flowered by its inhabitants
Every year, every season, the inhabitants of the old village delight us with their plantations which mingle, gently, with the houses, the alleys.

We nicknamed them among ourselves: “the village gardeners”.

It is impossible to miss the bougainvilleas during your visit. The best time to discover them is between the end of May/July. They may bloom again after summer as well.

Find the bougainvillea walk where around thirty shrubs are referenced and admire them in the alleys of Grimaud.

A village blessed by the gods
The heart of the perched village, wonderfully restored, has kept all its authenticity: cobbled streets, facades with vaulted arcades, pastel windows with flowery shutters, squares with bougainvillea essences. Unmissable, the discovery tour of the village, its churches and chapels bears witness to a rich historical past, traces of which can be found in the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions.

The feudal castle, placed at the top of the hill in its green setting, guarded access to a territory (the current Gulf of Saint-Tropez), called Le Freinet, from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. The view from above is unforgettable. After a restaurant break in the village, go to the Moulin Saint-Roch, prelude to a walk below to the Pont des Fées, where you will make wishes to… but that must remain a secret!

Les Arcs Sur Argens tourist town
Heritage, history, gastronomy and leisure come together in Les Arcs sur Argens.

The City of “Parage” draws the Middle Ages, the Sainte-Roseline chapel reveals its works of art.

The Massif des Maures and its Argens river invite you to nature sports…

It is in the heart of the Argens plain and on the edge of the Maures forest that the village stands on the side of a hill. Between the sea and the peaks, bordered by wooded hills, the village enjoys a Mediterranean climate with pleasant temperatures and more than reasonable sunshine.

In the village, out of sight and a few steps from the central square, the Parage district around its keep reveals a rich medieval past. The lands of Argens nourish many vineyards and the establishment of the wine house Côte de Provence in the town, makes it a wine capital.

Coming to Les Arcs means discovering the roots of Provence and it is with great pleasure that the village, its countryside landscapes, its shops and its inhabitants welcome you for your holidays or for a simple stopover.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

The walls. They formed a continuous enclosure pierced by four gates, the Porte du Réal, the Porte Milante, the Porte Basse or the Clock and the Porte Haute.

The remains of the castle, built in the 13th century and which was the scene of historical events such as the birth of Ste Roseline in 1263 and the signing of important acts concerning all of Provence.

Continue your visit with the Saint Jean Baptiste church, built in 1851. It contains a polyptych by Louis Bréa dated 1501 and you can contemplate a magnificent animated Provençal nativity scene there.

NATURE & TERROIR

The quality of our terroir and the climate of our region make our town a favorable place for growing vines. This activity has always been, and still is, important for our village.

As evidenced by the landscape of vineyards which is an integral part of the village, there are still many winegrowers in the area and nine estates cultivate high quality grape varieties.

The production of exceptional wines gives our estates a reputation throughout our region and for some well beyond our borders.

Take the time to meet our winegrowers, visit their cellars and taste their wines.

For amateurs, as for connoisseurs, enter the house of wines and let yourself be guided to discover all the aromas of the Côtes de Provence.

During a walk in the Maures forest, between rosemary and heather, in the middle of a land with golden reflections, come and admire the menhirs of the burrows. The 9 steles, accidentally discovered several years ago, are now accessible during a charming walk of a few kilometers in the heart of our hills.

In 1591, a fire ravaged the building, which only regained its current form in the 20th century, when Félix Bouvier d'Yvoire undertook several interior and exterior renovation works, including the installation of the roof and the corner watchtowers. in 1939.

One of the most beautiful villages in France
Since 1981, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie has been ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Church, ramparts, chapels, aqueduct, fountains, alliances of water and stone, pastel tones of tiles and tufa shape a homogeneous and living architectural ensemble. The sweetness of life that emanates from it naturally encourages us to respect and value this place, to discover it and protect it. The work of the land, perpetrated for centuries, is the link between the history and the future of the village.

Authentic and alive
Today, Moustiers has about 700 inhabitants. The heart of its economy revolves around tourism and the pottery tradition. The capacity of reception in the municipality is important. In addition to 750 camping pitches and a holiday village, 130 hotel rooms in the village center or on the outskirts, around twenty gîtes and guest rooms and more than 50 furnished accommodation, it is easy to discover the local wonders beyond a furtive crossing. The various services will satisfy all desires and all budgets.

On the retail side, artists' and craftsmen's stalls rub shoulders with local services.

On the food side, around twenty restaurants satisfy gourmets and gourmets, lovers of refined gastronomy, brasseries or local cuisine.

A village anchored in the Regional Natural Park of Verdon and the Geopark of Haute-Provence.
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is part of the Regional Natural Park of Verdon, straddling the two departments of Var and Alpes de Haute Provence, which extends over 46 municipalities and includes seven large landscaped areas. This diversity of ecosystems gives the park a rich and varied natural heritage: vultures, bats, chamois, deer and endemic flora. The Headquarters of the Verdon Regional Natural Park is located in the town of Moustiers.

Verdon Gorge

Moustiers is also located on the territory of the UNESCO Geopark of Haute-Provence. This UNESCO-listed nature reserve covers 60 towns in the Alpes de Haute-Provence department. Many natural and geological sites allow you to discover the last 300 million years of Earth's history.

The parish church

Classified as a historical monument in 1913, the church proudly displays its Lombard bell tower, one of the most beautiful in Provence. This square tuff tower rises twenty-two meters high divided into four floors with twin openings. Dating from the 12th century, this bell tower was one of the three moving bell towers recorded in Europe. The Romanesque nave from the same period is divided into five bays with pointed barrel vaults. The pilasters flare upwards, a fairly common phenomenon in Romanesque churches. Exterior buttress walls compensate for this movement. Three semicircular vaulted chapels, later, open onto this nave.

The mountains rock

The cliffs on which the village is built and those dominating it formed natural lines of defence, but Moustiers also protected itself behind ramparts as for many villages, built in the Middle Ages.

Pierre de Pratis, commendatory prior, ordered in 1336 the enlargement of the church; the axis of the nave was not respected and we do not know if the prior wanted to incline the choir in the direction of Jerusalem or recall the position of the head of Christ on the cross. The current altar is a fourth century sarcophagus in white marble representing the passage of the Red Sea.

Eze - A Beautiful Medieval Village in the South of France - A Unique Architectural Village

Saint-Paul-de-Vence can be seen from afar, with its medieval appearance surrounded by ramparts, at the top of a hill between the Mediterranean and the Grasse Pre-Alps.

Many artists stayed there after the Second World War and brought the village international fame. Today, the Maeght Foundation maintains the artistic vocation of the place.

It is certainly the most visited village in the hinterland of Nice and even one of the most touristic in France.

Located between Eze and Monaco, the town of Eze extends over three cornices with a height difference of nearly 700 m.

Eze Bord de Mer with its beach shaded by a maritime pine forest is home to many paths that wind between the Belle Epoque villas.

The alleys of Eze-Village are lined with old stately homes occupied by workshops and shops of artists or craftsmen.

From the exotic garden, laid out in the ruins of a medieval fortress at the top of the village, the panorama extends beyond the Esterel massif.

So the destiny of Eze is linked to that of Nice. In 1388, Eze was attached to the House of Savoy and was occupied by Turkish troops from Barbarossa for a few days in 1543. During the War of Spanish Succession, the armies of Louis XIV destroyed the castle. Eze is attached to France in 1860.

During the Belle Epoque and then in the inter-war period, tourists began to visit or stay in Eze. George Sand described its tormented landscapes, Friedrich Nietzsche completed his work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” there, Prince William of Sweden took up residence at Château Eza from 1923 to 1953.

Today, personalities from the artistic world regularly reside in the city. Bono of the group U2, Julian Lennon are among the best known.

Eze Village- France Most Beautiful Village| Cote d' Azur

From Villefranche Sur Mer we took a day trip to the medieval hilltop village of Eze. It is France's most beautiful medieval hilltop village in the Cot d' Azur region. We were advised not to take the train as it is a long way on foot to the village. The bus was convenient as it stops at the town where you will find the Tourism office for the very useful map. The entrance to the village is still 10 minutes walk from the bus stop. In the town you'll find two French perfumers. It was interesting to visit the shop where you can see all the ingredients and old machines used in perfume and soap production.
The medieval village of Eze was built 400 m above sea level, so you can enjoy a fairy tale view of the French Riviera. A walk through cobbled narrow lanes and stone arches around Eze gives you the feeling that you are in a period movie set.Eze I think is one of the most beautiful villages of France.
