La Posada De Santa Fe: The Perfect Escape To New Mexico

Wanting to get the most out of an art-focused trip, I decided to stay at La Posada de Santa Fe a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, which has become known as the Art Hotel of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It’s set up inside a former 1880’s mansion that later became an art colony where famous artists like Georgia O’Keefe stayed before it was turned to a resort.

I usually can’t wait to hit the ground running after checking into a hotel, but here I decide to take my time walking around the property, looking at art for purchase displayed all over the buildings main corridor. It feels like a more interactive gallery than most and allows guests to discover nation wide right off the bat from more than 50 different artists.

The hotels art curator, Sara Eyestone, works with artists from across the nation, giving them a chance to showcase their talent. Guests who purchase a piece of art end up with a perk from the property too: an extra nights stay at half the rate with resort fees waived.

Outside the hotel and resorts main corridors, guests will find adobe casitas, each of which are uniquely designed with a southwestern style, making me feel like I am in a village instead of a typical hotel. Some of the 157 rooms date back more than 200 years with many featuring original adobe walls and kivas, a southwestern style fireplace.

The onsite Spa Sage, a full service spa and salon, offers a list of treatments unique to the region and that are locally inspired.

If you go: La Posada is two blocks from the historic plaza where you will find several cultural attractions like the Santa Fe Opera House and Georgia O’Keefe Museum. It’s an hour drive from Albuquerque International Airport and 20 minutes from the Santa Fe Airport.

Hot Springs, Kayaking, Slot Canyons, & Badlands NEW MEXICO Travel Vlog

We have camped in New Mexico for over a month now. We planned to breeze through the land of enchantment but quickly learned that there are WAY TOO MANY awesome sights and adventures to be had in this area. Fortunately, this life on the road allows for lots of flexibility and we can stay for essentially as long as we want to explore our surroundings!

We went to our first natural hot springs which was clothing optional and felt like a dream! We kayaked in our inflatable kayak for the first time and sucked at it but had a blast. We hiked through slot canyons and above the unique tent rocks of Kasha Katuwe. Zac tent-camped and shot the milky way in the dark sky of the badlands. New Mexico has been absolutely unreal and is a new favorite travel destination for us!

Route 66 Part 8 - We Reach SANTA FE, New Mexico

In part 8 we take Route 66 from Tucumcari to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This is the Santa Fe loop which was the original alignment of Route 66 between 1926 and 1937.

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and looks very different to many of the other towns and cities on Route 66. It has a very distinctive architectural style all its own. Low rise, adobe brick buildings, which consist of a mixture of sun-dried earth and straw. Many of these are over 400 years old.

Santa Fe is also home to many artists with galleries concentrated along Canyon Road.

We stayed in Santa Fe for two nights so got a full day to explore. As well as the historic buildings in the centre of town we did get chance to visit the Santa Fe Farmers Market at the Railyard which is open Saturday and Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.

We didn’t take the camera to any restaurants but the standard of food in Santa Fe is excellent.

So make sure you take the Santa Fe Loop when driving Route 66.

Next time, we drive Route 66 to Winslow, Arizona.

When planning the trip we have found the following Route 66 books and maps very useful:

Santa Fe, New Mexico: Burt Wolf Travels & Traditions (#701)

BURT WOLF: TRAVELS & TRADITIONS - SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO (#701)
For over 12,000 years, Native Americans have been living in the area around Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Spanish arrived in the 1600s and eventually the two cultures blended together to form one of the most interesting societies in America. In this program, we take a helicopter tour of some of the most beautiful parts of the Southwest, visit the oldest church in the United States, and discover how the native tribes used modern ledger paper to preserve their heroic legends and personal stories. We visit the Loretto Chapel and inspect its magic staircase, which appears to be totally unsupported. We travel through the Bandelier National Monument and see the remains of an ancient Pueblo community and take a look at a simple and inexpensive construction technique that will keep a house in good shape for hundreds of years.

House Hunting in Santa Fe, New Mexico

I think we knew all along what house we wanted to buy. After all we had Zillow and Redfin and had loved the place for months prior to viewing, but we also wanted to be open minded about other homes. One never knows whats out there, and we were open to seeing all the other homes in the same price range. I think its obvious from the beginning what house we chose. We have since moved in, and I don't regret a thing.
