TALLULAH GORGE STATE PARK | North Face Gear | Georgia Hiking | Georgia Waterfalls| Tallulah Falls

This week we partner with The North Face as we hike to Tallulah Gorge along the Hurricane Falls Trail at Tallulah Gorge State Park. The Xplore Pass from North Face encourages you to #neverstopexploring

This hike is over 1000 stairs up and back. You travel over a suspension bridge on your way down to the hurricane falls overlook. One you get to the falls, if open you have the opportunity to head down to the gorge floor. Only 100 permits are issued each day, however on the day we arrived they were issuing no permits at all. The overlooks are a great way to get an idea of just how large the gorge is and the interpretive centre is very informative!

Tallulah Gorge State Park | Georgia Waterfall Hikes

Join us as we explore the beauty and magnificence of Tallulah Gorge State Park in northern Georgia. In this video we make the trek down 1062 steps to the swinging bridge and then on down to Hurricane Falls.

We visited here in October of 2021 while staying in the Helen, GA area.

Exploring Georgia: Tallulah Gorge State Park

Visit to Tallulah Gorge State Park and did some hiking. Took about 1.5 hours to complete. Wonderful scenery, a decent workout, and one shaky suspension bridge.

Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia | Largest Canyon in the East | Filming Location of Deliverance

We traveled to North Georgia to visit one of its most popular state parks at Tallulah Gorge. This is one of the largest and steepest gorges east of the Mississippi, typically striking comparisons with the Linville Gorge of North Carolina. Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and almost 1,000 feet deep, complete with a suspension bridge, six waterfalls, an interpretive center, and hiking trails with 1,099 man-made steps to assist you up and down the canyon walls. There are few places within the southeast that have such an array of activities and the stunning grandeur of Tallulah Gorge.

Tallulah Gorge was also the filming location of the 1971 Burt Reynolds film, Deliverance. This movie tells the epic tale of four friends that canoe down the fictitious Cahulawassee River before it becomes dammed and loses its thrilling rapids. In the movie, the rising waters filmed are actually at Lake Jocassee, created when Duke Power flooded the valley in 1971. Most of the exhilarating canoe trip was filmed on the Chattooga River that straddles the Georgia-South Carolina border. The calmer stretch of water toward the end of the film features Tallulah Gorge itself. This is where they filmed one of the friends scaling the canyon’s sheer cliff face to confront the enemy. Deliverance is, in fact, filled with breath-taking footage of these North Georgia mountains and related tributaries.

Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia - Beautiful!

Our recent trip to Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia was amazing! Beautiful scenery, fun and challenging hike, along with incredible views of the gorge! Located in Tallulah Falls, Georgia (Northeast Georgia), we've visited this park several times and have a wonderful time with each visit.

This park can be very busy, so be prepared for that when you you visit. It was very hot on the day of our visit, and neither Cupcake nor I are in the same shape we were in last year for our 4 month adventure out west. It was a challenge, but the views throughout the hike are well worth it!

If you want to go onto the gorge floor you'll need a permit (available at the visitor center). You can hike all the way down to the gate that allows access and the views there are amazing. Tallulah Gorge is nearly 2 miles long and almost a thousand feet deep. There are lots of things to do in this park, including 50 tent/rv campsites, a 63 acre lake, the amazing suspension bridge and more!

In the Hiking Epic Trails series, we find the coolest landmarks on each trail leading to a waterfall and give them a name. However, some of them already have a name. In order, the landmarks in this video are Overlook 3, Overlook 2, Suspension Bridge, Overlook 8, Overlook 9, Seat In A Cave, Overlook 10, Hurricane Falls.

The Tallulah Gorge is a gorge formed by the Tallulah River cutting through the Tallulah Dome rock formation. The gorge is approximately 2 miles (3 km) long and almost 1,000 feet (300 m) deep.[1] The Tallulah Gorge is located next to the town of Tallulah Falls, Georgia. Tallulah Gorge State Park protects much of the gorge and its waterfalls. The gorge is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia.[2]

Just above the falls is Tallulah Falls Lake, created in 1913 by a hydroelectric dam built by Georgia Railway and Power (now Georgia Power) in order to run Atlanta's streetcars. The dam still collects and redirects most of the water via a 2,032 m tunnel sluice or penstock around the falls to an electricity generation station downstream that is 608 feet (185 m) lower than the lake, except for a few days each year. The days when water is released are very popular for recreation, such as kayaking and whitewater rafting.[3]
