Exploring Macau, Beyond the Casinos

It generates four times more gambling revenue than Las Vegas but there's more to Macau than slot machines and roulette. Look past the casinos to find a wealth of history and cuisine shaped by the fusion of Chinese and Portuguese culture.

Saving Macau’s Dying Language

Macau is best known today for its casinos, but 20 years ago, it was a colony governed by the Portuguese, who had been there for over 400 years. Many of the Portuguese traders married Chinese women, and their children developed their own distinct food, culture, and language.

But now this mixed-race group, known as the Macanese, makes up less than 1 percent of Macau’s population, and their language, Patuá, is dying.

A Visit to Macau

Macau is a strange and interesting place. Part of the territory has been designed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, largely because of its important role as a link between China and Europe (it was a Portugese territory for nearly four centuries.) After its reincorporation into China in 1999, Macau assumed new significance as a major gambling center; in 2006 its revenues surpassed those of Las Vegas.

How a Fishing Village Became The Richest Place on Earth! | Macau Adventure Travel Vlog #4

Following old postcards of Macau, me and my friend explore the places that have changed the most over the last 100 years.

Macau was once a sleepy fishing village acting as a great port for trade into China. However over recent years it has seen drastic change becoming one of the richest places on the planet soon to take over Qatar in 2020 as the richest place in the world.

Macau has made it's money through gambling becoming a huge travel destination for Mainland Chinese to come on holiday or a day trip.

Bordering Zhuhai and neighbor to Hong Kong it is often overlooked and many people do not know the history of this amazing place.

Through these old postcard photos of Macau we hope to travel back in time and show you how much Macau, China has changed due to tourism and travel.

Exploring Macau through these postcards was a great travel adventure and really hope you enjoy this travel vlog in Macau.

We explored Fai Chi Kei, Green Island and Senado Square and it truly was a great adventure travel experience.

If you want to see another travel adventure in Macao please let me know and if you want more videos on the history of Macau.

Historic Center of Macau, China [Amazing Places 4K]

Macau (Macao) is a special administrative region of China, former Portuguese oversees territory (until 1999). Macau is inscribed on the UNESCO WORLD Heritage list, quote: Macao, a lucrative port of strategic importance in the development of international trade, was under Portuguese administration from the mid-16th century until 1999, when it came under Chinese sovereignty. With its historic street, residential, religious and public Portuguese and Chinese buildings, the historic centre of Macao provides a unique testimony to the meeting of aesthetic, cultural, architectural and technological influences from East and West. The site also contains a fortress and a lighthouse, the oldest in China. It bears witness to one of the earliest and longest-lasting encounters between China and the West, based on the vibrancy of international trade.

In the video - the principal buildings and public spaces that form the Historic Center of Macau: A-Ma Temple (0:05), Lilau Square (0:39), Mandarin's House (0:50), St. Lawrence's Church (1:13), St. Joseph's Seminary and Church (1:36), Sir Robert Ho Tung Library (1:45), St. Augustine's Square (2:01), St. Augustine's Church (2:07), Dom Pedro V Theatre (2:17), Senado Square (2:35), Holy House of Mercy (2:42), 'Leal Senado' Building (3:12), Sam Kai Vui Kun (Kuan Tai Temple) (3:34), St. Dominic's Church (3:47), Cathedral (4:07), Lou Kau Mansion (4:12), Ruins of St. Paul's (4:29), Mount Fortress (5:01), Section of the Old City Walls (5:44), Na Tcha Temple (5:44), St. Anthony's Church (5:55), Casa Garden (6:06), Protestant Cemetery (6:20), Guia Fortress (including Lighthouse) (6:35).
