Khlong Toei Market: the biggest fresh market in Bangkok! | Thailand | 4K 60fps | nomadraul

Khlong Toei Market, Bangkok, Thailand

Khlong Toei market is Bangkok's biggest fresh market. It is located on Rama IV Road near the Khlong Toei and Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre MRT stations in the Khlong Toei neighborhood. The market offers low prices on raw meat, seafood, farm produce, and a few other items (clothing, kitchenware, etc.).

In January 2010 CNN listed Khlong Toei Market as one of the most authentic markets in Bangkok (as well as a place to avoid when hung over – some sections are not for the squeamish).

Basic recommendations about Khlong Toei market:
- Although the market is near the expat enclave of Sukhumvit, this market is in a different world to the glitz and glamor of the nearby district.
- You’re welcome to take photos, just don’t get in anyone’s way.
- It’s best to leave your nice shoes in the hotel. There’re puddles of dubious origin all over the place and stall owners aren’t shy with water. There are huge crowds during the busy hours so let your guide advise you in the best and safest way to approach a visit to Khlong Toei Market.
- The market isn’t air conditioned and can be very hot in the daytime.
- Khlong Toei Market is open virtually 24 hours, but best times are 6am to 2am daily.

[BANGKOK] Khlong Toei Market Bangkok's Biggest Wet Market | Thailand [4K HDR]

Khlong Toei Market. Do you love fresh food markets? If so, you will want to visit Khlong Toei Market. Khlong Toei Market is located near the popular expat enclave of Sukhumvit road and is listed by many people as one of the ‘must-visit’ markets in Bangkok for fresh food lovers. In fact, most of your food served during your stay in Bangkok will probably have been purchased here.

Khlong Toei means “Pandan Leaf Canal”. Pandan leaf is a fragrant leaf used to flavour Thai sweets and freshen the air however the canal smells somewhat different these days.

The very raw (and a little confronting) fresh meat section includes whole animals, huge piles of intestines and pig feet amongst plenty of other offal and other weird and exotic meats. The stench can be overwhelming if you’re not used to it but it’s a normal part of life for the locals here!. Various kinds of birds come plucked ready to cook and some are still waddling around in cages. It’s possible to buy a live duck to take home for dinner! There really is everything here including some things you won’t be used to like cow placenta, frogs and rats, and fruits you won’t have seen before. It wouldn’t be a Thai market without a range of insects for the adventurous. Thailand is famous for fruits like sweet tamarind, rose apples and seedless guavas which you can get here. The avocados and yellow watermelons are must try.

The seafood section is a wildly different experience to most markets in most countries. Some of the fish are still flapping away on the benches as the stall owners splash water over them without regard for passers-by. You might get wet!

Operation Hours: 24 Hours (Recommend time: 6:00 AM - 02:00 AM)

How to get there: MRT Khlong Toei Station (BL24), 10 min walk.

Welcome to the Klong Toei market, Bangkok’s biggest fresh market, a place where you can get anything that is or could be food. Located in Rama IV and open for 24 hours, this wet market is easily accessible to anybody in Bangkok who would like to shop for the freshest ingredients. This extensive market certainly is a village on its own, right between Bangkok’s concrete jungle. A village where you can get any food related item in wholesale rate. This market is so famous amongst the locals in this city, that the majority of all restaurants, retail stores and even the general public get all their produce from this juggernaut market. Walking past the narrow alleyways with numerous umbrellas sprawled across, you can find anything from live seafood and poultry to vibrant fruits and vegetables. Not only that, you can also find spices, curry pastes and even cooking utensils, which is everything you need when it comes to food and cooking. On the other side of the market, you find a wide variety of Thai desserts and snacks. Ever found the need to buy a big deal of groceries in a very cheap price? Welcome to the Klong Toei market, Bangkok’s biggest fresh market, a place where you can get anything that is or could be food. This extensive market certainly is a village on its own, right between Bangkok’s concrete jungle. A village where you can get any food related item in wholesale rate. This market is so famous amongst the locals in this city, that the majority of all restaurants, retail stores and even the general public all their produce from this juggernaut market.

There will definitely be some fishes jumping and flopping around the streets of the market. With all the things that are going on in the market, it is important to keep on track and stay focused so you do not feel overwhelmed. In that case, @DhanariEcommerce have done a complete tour vlog of the Klong Toei market with important information and areas to visit in the place.

History of the Khlong Toei market

The story of the Klong Toei market goes along with how Klong Toei district, Bangkok’s biggest slum came to existence. The name of the place Khlong Toei comes from the Toei or pandan leaves. As Toei leaves abundantly grew around the area, the aromatic smell of it wandered around the canal, hence the place got its name Khlong Toei (Canal of Pandan). Unfortunately, the smell of the pandan leaves have wafted away but the name stuck around.

The Khlong Toei district situated on the land owned by the Port Authority of Thailand. Residents of that area first settled there in 1950s, looking for work. There was a huge requirement of cheap labor in the capital at that time. The city had come up with a land rent system which made many people move there to find work and settle on a land with a very low cost. However, the city grew incredibly in the 1970s and the system started failing as landowners begin to build condominiums or other new ventures on their land instead of the local people. The people of Khlong Toei started working as labors in the Port Authority of Thailand and opened up shops to sell the products that was shipped in. This practice grew and soon enough a wide market formed along the canal, with a juxtaposition of food stalls that can impress anybody passing by.
