????5 Things You Should Know About Amsterdam! In this series of videos, I cover things you should know about Amsterdam or things you don't know about Amsterdam (aka some nice Amsterdam information / facts). All these Amsterdam mistakes are placed in random order, so it's not an Amsterdam Top 5, just Amsterdam facts & information in the order which came to my mind while filming. Some will be things you wish you knew before going to Amsterdam (and did I put this sentence here for you or for the YouTube algorithm? I might answer that question in another video!). I guess a few of these will really surprise you! And the I Amsterdam City Card may not be the best option for you after all! Some of the Amsterdam facts are common knowledge to all Amsterdam locals, but other things come from my personal experience (loophole: I'm also an Amsterdam local). And I can't stretch this enough: respect everyone in the Amsterdam Red Light District.????Please consider subscribing for more videos about Amsterdam!

????ABOUT ME:
This is my Amsterdam YouTube channel where I'm posting videos about Amsterdam (would you have guessed that?). I am making things like Amsterdam Top 10 videos (about for example Museums, Squares or Bridges). Or Amsterdam TO DO videos, which is a series of short videos in which I show known and unknown things you can check out in Amsterdam. I also make Amsterdam walking route and Amsterdam cycle route videos in several areas of the city, it might be fun for you to walk the route yourself when you're here, or you will find out that you definitely don't wanna go to a certain area! (in which case I saved you some time). I show you what to do in Amsterdam but also things to do outside Amsterdam. In some of the videos, I'll have CouchSurfers (also know as tourists) who are CouchSurfing at my place during the time of filming.

Windows Of Amsterdam | Amsterdam The Red Light District De Wallen

The Red Light District, or 'De Wallen' as the area is known to locals, is the oldest district of Amsterdam. Ever since it was built around 1385, it has been both famous and notorious for the women inhabiting its streets.

Amsterdam’s Nine Streets, ideal for walking and shopping

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
One of Amsterdam's best neighborhoods for walking and shopping is called the Nine Streets.
Amsterdam is among the world's great cities for walking. There are so many neighborhoods in this city that are wonderful to explore on foot, or perhaps on a bicycle, as so many locals get around, including entire families.
There's an excellent website put together by the merchants of the area that describes in great detail everything that you'll find in the Nine Streets, with a listing of the shops, with photos, maps and a brochure you can download. So take a look at that website
Among all of the favorite spots in Europe for walking through a town, this has to rank among the best. It's right next to the Dam, Amsterdam's main square. It looks like it's three streets, but each one has three parts, so that's a total of the nine streets.
I'm going to take you on an organized walking tour through all of those main streets from south to north. You will be delighted to see how friendly it is to pedestrians, and how many little independent shops there are here. And we will also be looking at the beautiful canals that run throughout this district – four major waterways that add to the special character of the Nine Streets.
Singel is one of the main streets along the canal of the same name, and this is part of that great charm of the neighborhood – you've got waterways along with these pedestrian lanes lined with shops, with an old pissoir, part of that historic heritage of the neighborhood.
Here you also find apartments, offices, and some hotels. It's a complete neighborhood, very attractive for both the visitors and the local residents.
This is a compact zone with basically a square shape, just 400 meters from one end to the other, making it so easy to walk and see all of it in a day. The paving is great, you're welcome to walk in the street and the terrain is flat.
There are quaint and picturesque neighborhoods throughout the Netherlands, and in other sections of Amsterdam, indeed all over Europe there are hundreds of charming towns with wonderful places for strolling, but it's hard to find one that has all of these characteristics in one place: sidewalk cafés, major canals, pedestrian lanes, a thick concentration of independent little shops, amid a large collection of attractive historic buildings, with a central location that's easy to get to. This is clearly someplace very special.
From the very beginning 400 years ago, this charming neighborhood was dominated by trade and culture, and still it has a great bustling atmosphere full of quirky little shops, designer boutiques and hidden cafés.
There are 60 boutiques, 40 places for food and drink and sleep, 5 for vintage 12, shops for shoes and bags, 16 for accessories and jewelry, 14 for hair, health and beauty, 18 home and lifestyle, 8 art, culture and books, and 25 specialties.
Most of the shops here are unique little boutiques.
There are hardly any tourists, souvenir shops, but you'll find plenty of places to buy a keepsake to bring home.
In the old days, these streets served the merchant families and businesses who worked along the canals. There were milking establishments, gas and fire shops, and liqueur distilleries. In the 60s, the hippies discovered the neighborhood. They not only came to live there, but also started shops selling secondhand clothes, furniture, lamps and curiosities, some of which can still be found today.
As you've noticed there are no shopping malls or big department stores here. It's just not that kind of place, but instead it's laced with authentic shops and picturesque scenes. There are big department stores elsewhere in Amsterdam, of course, you can find them along some of the main boulevards, but don't look for them here.
Most shops are open every day from about 10 or 11 in the morning until six or seven in the evening, all year round. While this neighborhood is a slice of heaven for shoppers, it's fun even if you don't intend to buy anything. Just walking around through these streets is a pure pleasure. And we have the added bonus of seeing row after row of houses along the canal.
There are thousands of boats of all shapes and sizes here, including quite a few houseboats, some of which are available as vacation rentals, although Amsterdam has been reducing the number of vacation rentals available to protect the housing market. There are several excellent hotels in the Nine Streets that have converted rows of canal houses into deluxe accommodations, including the Pulitzer, the Dylan, the Hockston and the Andaz. You can get a room with a view looking out over the canal, or a quiet room at the back looking out over a garden.
Another way to get around is to rent a bicycle, which makes a great way to see this neighborhood and the rest of town, one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in Europe.

10 FUN THINGS TO DO IN AMSTERDAM

Discover the top 10 things to do in Amsterdam. Locals tell you the 10 fun things to do in Amsterdam if you go there. Prepare your bucketlist for your trip to the Netherlands!
Amsterdam Flight Hacks ????

Chapters:
0:00 Welcome to Amsterdam
The Dutch capital Amsterdam is unique in its kind. Anyone who sees photographs or film clips of Amsterdam will immediately recognize that they were taken in this city. For conservative people, the largest city in the Netherlands looks like a place where everything seems to be allowed and possible. Of course, Amsterdam is much more than drugs, sex and destruction. The ancient city has a world famous canal belt with beautiful authentic canal houses. The city has numerous unique museums, each of which is at the top of its genre. Today we tell you 10 things to do in Amsterdam.

0:40 The canals of Amsterdam
If thee is one thing Amsterdam is known for, it is its canals. Every day thousands of tourists take part in a canal cruise. During such a tour, which usually lasts about an hour, you discover the canals and its history. You will hear the history of a number of historic buildings and you will discover the various typical Dutch facades.

1:20 Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House is where the Jewish girl Anne Frank went into hiding when the Germans occupied the Netherlands during World War II. Here she wrote her world famous diary. Due to the enormous interest in this museum and its compact size, advance reservations are essential. This can be done via the Anne Frank House website.

2:10 Van Gogh Museum
The name says it all: this art museum is dedicated to the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. A visit to the Van Gogh Museum means a journey through the artistic life of Van Gogh. During the walk through the museum you will see his development as a painter and the impact his mental state had on his work. In addition to works by Van Gogh, you'll also see pieces by his contemporaries, such as Paul Gaugin and Claude Monet.

2:57 Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is one of the 16 national museums in the Netherlands. Located in the Rijksmuseum building designed by Pierre Cuypers, it houses a truly top-notch collection of art objects such as paintings, prints and sculptures. Its most famous work is The Company of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh Prepares to March Out. The shorter name The Night Watch (De Nachtwacht) will probably sound more familiar to you. This painting, created in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn, is unique and invaluable. Fortunately, it is of such a size that you don't just put it under your arm and walk out with it.

3:52 De Pijp (The Pipe District)
Most visitors to Amsterdam are particularly charmed by De Pijp. Within De Pijp there are a number of attractions that deserve to be highlighted. For example, you can visit the famous Albert Cuyp market here six days a week. This market is a prime example of a typical Dutch market.

4:45 Cycling
Netherlands is hte land of cycling. There are over 800.000 bicycles in Amsterdam. It's highly recommended to hire a bike and discover the city by bike. Take the ferry to Amsterdam North and ride into the country side.

5:24 Artis
This approximately 14-hectare zoo first opened its doors in 1838. Over the years Artis has grown in size and the live animals are now the main attraction. Several innovations have taken place within Artis over the past few decades. An interesting fairly new feature is Micropia. Here you can learn about microscopically small organisms.

5:58 The Jordaan
The Jordaan is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Amsterdam. Once started as a working class neighborhood and transformed into a hip district where the Jordanian roots are visible in various ways. One thing that has never disappeared is the wonderful atmosphere that prevails in the sometimes narrow streets. The contemporary Jordaan is a neighborhood full of nice restaurants and fine boutiques.

6:36 Het Vondelpark
The Vondelpark is a large elongated city park located to the southwest of Amsterdam's historic center. For some of the people of Amsterdam, the Vondelpark is the piece of green where you go when the weather is inviting enough. For tourists, a walk through Vondel Park means getting to know this side of Amsterdam: mostly smiling people who prefer to spend their free time here together in all sorts of ways during sunny weather.

7:09 De Wallen - Red Light District
The Red Light District or the ramparts have become a kind of cultural heritage of the red light district of Amsterdam. The area known far beyond its borders as the Red Light District attracts thousands of visitors. And that is not meant to be ambiguous. The narrow alleys between the ramparts house several hundred windows with red lights burning behind them.

Enjoy your visit to Amsterdam!

Visit The Netherlands - The Don'ts of The Netherlands

Read the Blog: What Tourists Should Not Do When They Visit The Netherlands

Whether Heading to Amsterdam for a Crazy Night in the Red Light District, or to Haarlem for an architecture and art rendezvouses or to Rotterdam the Netherlands has a lot for people to do when they visit. This video goes over some things you shouldn't do when you go to The Netherlands.
The Don'ts of Visiting The Netherlands. Things Tourists Shouldn't Do in The Netherlands or Holland.
Filmed in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Copyright Mark Wolters 2017

Don't #1. Don't Call The Netherlands, Holland. Holland is actually only two of the twelve counties in The Netherlands.
Don't #2. Don't Think the Netherlands is Just Amsterdam. There are tons of other towns, cities and villages to visit. From the flowers in Keukenhof to the Beauty of Groningen.
Don't #3. Don't Be stupid with Drugs or Alcohol when you visit. The coffeeshops are world famous and you should never buy drugs off the street.
Don't #4. Don't just bite into hot food. The Dutch like their fried food hot as can be, so make sure you take a second to blow on it or else you might lose a few skin cells.
Don't #5. Don't Wander into the Bike Lanes in The Netherlands. Those bikes will get you.
Don't #6, Don't Take the Dutch Attitude Personally. The Dutch are very straightforward and will ask you anything. So don't be upset, just know that is just how they are.
Don't #7. Don't Forget to Bring a chip card with a PIN number for purchasing from person-less kiosks & shops.
Don't #8. Have coins with you so you can pick up a snack on the go.
Don't #9. Don't Be Surprised if you see all the Dutch Tourism Stereotypes when you visit. From wooden shoes to windmills to cheese to really tall people on bikes, you will see them.
Don't #10. Don't forget to buzz your train ticket card when you enter and exit the platforms/stations.
Don't #11. Don't Take pictures of the girls in the windows in the Red Light District.
Don't #12. Don't Take the Hop On Hop Off Bus in Amsterdam. The bus cannot go a lot of places in the historic center. You would be better off on the hop on hop off canal boat.
Don't #13. Don't think that Amsterdam is just the red light district. It is so much more with culture, food, art.
Don't #14. Don't forget to Bring a jacket. It will rain while you are there, even if it says sunny.

Made famous by its liberal attitudes, bikes, museums, art and history, Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and here are ten tips in one minute for your city break.

When crossing the road, take care. You’ll have to cross the bike lane, both lanes of traffic, then the bike lane on the other side. And that’s before even thinking about trams. We recommend using pedestrian crossings.

When riding a bike, remember to obey the rules. Bike lanes have their own traffic lights and work just like the ones for cars. Stop at red lights and make sure you’re ready for the greens, the locals will not wait for you.

Speaking of bikes, don’t walk in the bike lanes. It’s dangerous for you and the cyclists.

Get an iamsterdam card. It gets you free public transport and discounts on tickets to lots of popular places.

Cafes sell coffee; coffee shops sell…other stimulants…

Most people speak excellent English, so there’s no need to learn Dutch before you go.

Do not take photos in the Red Light District. Sex workers do not like it at all. Amsterdam reversed its plans to stop selling soft drugs to tourists so it’s perfectly legal for foreigners to use coffee shops.

Speaking of which, no under 18s are allowed and this is strictly enforced.

Book ahead. Tourists spots like Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum and Anne Franks’s house can have queues for up to an hour if you turn up without a ticket.

With its picturesque canals, rich cultural history, and mind-blowing nightlife, Amsterdam is a city you will never forget.
Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. It is located in the western part of the country, and it has a population of approximately 900,000 people.
Visitors can enjoy boat tours along the canals, see the art of the Dutch master painters, and experience the liberal attitudes towards drugs and prostitution that are legal in certain areas of the city. Amsterdam is a dynamic and diverse city that offers something for everyone, from its unique culture and architecture to its bustling social scene.
But let's start with a short introduction to the city's history. Amsterdam was founded as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, but it quickly grew into a major port and trading centre. In the 17th century, it became one of the wealthiest cities in the world due to its dominance in international trade, especially with the Dutch East India Company. The city has also played an important role in cultural and intellectual history, with prominent figures such as Rembrandt and Anne Frank calling Amsterdam home. Today, Amsterdam is a melting pot of culture known for its open-minded attitudes and innovative approach to urban planning.

Discover Amsterdam for Yourself

Amsterdam is a city with a rich history and unique character. Its narrow streets and charming canals are lined with beautiful houses and historic buildings, many of which date back to the 17th century. Amsterdam is also known for its vibrant culture, lively nightlife, and liberal attitudes. One of the most popular ways to explore Amsterdam is by bicycle. The city is incredibly bike-friendly, with dedicated bike lanes and parking facilities throughout. Riding along the canals and through the narrow streets is a great way to soak up the city's atmosphere and see its many sights.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Amsterdam, from visiting world-class museums like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to strolling through picturesque parks like Vondelpark and Amsterdamse Bos. You can also sample delicious Dutch cuisine, including traditional dishes like stroopwafels, bitterballen, and raw herring.

But perhaps what sets Amsterdam apart most of all is its progressive and open-minded culture. Welcome to... Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a top contender in Europe's beauty pageant, it's right up there with Venice and Paris but will never win it: it's too busy with funky mellow bars and unparalleled nightlife. Amsterdam has always been like this, ever since the Golden Age, when it led European art and trade. Centuries later, in the 1960s, it again led the pack – this time in the principles of tolerance, with broad-minded views on drugs and same sex relationships taking centre stage. Wander the 17th-century streets, tour the iconic canals, stop off to enjoy a masterpiece, discover a funky shop and taste cuisines from all over the world.
