THE GAMBIA | Visit ABUKO NATURE RESERVE - TANJI BIRD

Video about THE GAMBIA | Visit ABUKO NATURE RESERVE - TANJI BIRD

Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve are located in the Kombo South District in the West Coast Region in the southwest coastal area of The Gambia in West Africa.

Abuko is rare among African wildlife reserves: it's tiny, it's easy to reach and you don't need a car to go in. With amazing diversity of vegetation and animals, this well-managed reserve is one of the region's best bird-watching haunts. There are more than 250 bird species that have been recorded, but you we only saw a few. There are 5km of paths through the 106-hectare reserve. There you can watch the Nile crocodile.

Best day periods to visit is early in the morning, or latter the day, otherwise you won´t see many animals and birds.

The Tanji River Bird Reserve is an area of dunes, lagoons and woodland, and contains Bijol Island, a protected breeding ground for Caspian terns. True to name, the reserve is home to many bird species – over 300 at last count. Even if you see few birds, the place and its landscape are worth visiting.

Like Abuko, best day periods to visit is early in the morning, or latter the day, otherwise you won´t see many birds,

Whether you jet over to immerse yourself in The Gambia’s world-class birdwatching, its golden sandy beaches or its exhilarating culture and vibrant atmosphere, there’s always something ready to captivate holidaymakers visiting The Gambia for the first time. While it may be mainland Africa’s smallest country, The Gambia is big on attractions and appeal, promising to be one of most exciting and diverse destinations in the continent. One of my favourite corners of the continent is West Africa. The Gambia, in particular, is a popular holiday destination with the British thanks to its golden sandy beaches, year-round hot weather, colourful culture and friendly English speaking locals. It’s in the same time zone as we are too which is handy! For many years, I worked for a tour operator to West Africa, visiting regularly for over a decade, both for work and on holiday. While many tourists rarely leave the beach or the poolside, there are no end of things to do in The Gambia, even on a tight budget. It’s a fabulous place to explore.in this video, we are looking into Top 10 Places To Visit in The Gambia!

Ecotourism Flourishes In Gambia - Focus

In this edition of Focus euronews' Francois Chignac reports on ecotourism in The Gambia.

The African continent is known for its wildlife and flora. But in The Gambia you have to look up to the sky. Watch the trees and you will see the country is one giant open-air aviary. Here there are more than 500 species of birds, some of them very rare, explained Francois who visited Tanji Bird Reserve in The Gambia's National Park.

Behind the reserve you have the Atlantic Ocean where birds come from d…

Top reasons to visit The Gambia, and not only ☀????

Why The Gambia?

And why not?

These are my favorite things to do in The Gambia!
Be amazed by these top places and experiences in The Gambia! iilluminaughtii

Think of long sandy beaches that are never overcrowded, a vibrant colorful culture, wonderful wildlife, and friendly English-speaking locals; there’s no end of reasons why you should consider a Gambia holiday.

The Gambia in West Africa is a fascinating place, and with no rain between November to the middle of June virtually guaranteed, and temperatures in the 30s, it is a fantastic winter sun destination. The coast has many lovely, long sandy beaches which are never over-crowded, even in the height of the season. And you’ll find it much cheaper than many other popular winter sun locations such as the Caribbean.

Are you visiting The Gambia for the first time? Here are some great things to do to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.

Take a bath in Sanyang Beach

There are many lovely sandy beaches in The Gambia, none of which ever get overcrowded and some with not another soul in sight. Sanyang, also known as Paradise Beach, is many people’s favorite....

Explore a Fishing Village

There are fish markets at Bakau, Tanji and Sanyang. These are colorful, vibrant places where you can watch the pirogues (fishing boats) come in and unload the day’s catch. ...

Don't miss a visit to Kunta Kinteh Island

Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly called James Island and St Andrew's Island, is an island in the Gambia River, 30 km from the Gambia River Barra. Fort James is located on the island. It is less than 3.2 km (2 miles) from Albreda on the river's northern bank.

Explore Banjul

A visit to The Gambia’s capital, Banjul, will add some history and culture to your African adventure.

Banjul is located on the island of Santa Maria, or Banjul Island, at the mouth of the Gambia River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The metropolitan area has about 460,000 inhabitants

Visit the Royal Albert Market and Serekunda market

Wind your way around the labyrinth of alleyways lined with ramshackle stalls as you explore the Royal Albert Market in The Gambia.

The tourist market selling clothes, jewelry, arts and crafts, is much like any other of the many markets dotted around the coastal tourist areas, aimed specifically at visitors to The Gambia.

Spend some days at Jynack Island

Jinack Island (also spelled Jinak or Ginak) is in the North Bank Region of the Lower Niumi District of The Gambia, in West Africa.

Get into Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve

Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve are located in the Kombo South District in the West Coast Region in the southwest coastal area of The Gambia in West Africa.

A walk along the beach at sunset

The sunsets in The Gambia can be spectacular. Being so near the equator the sun goes down very quickly around 7 pm (give or take half an hour).

Our Visit to Makasutu Culture Forest/The Gambia: with THE DEE'S

By far, this was the most informative tour/adventure that we received in The Gambia! If you are truly into learning about Gambian culture and ecology take this tour. At 3+ hours the half day portion of this tour is quite sufficient, just eat before you arrive. Be ready for nature: wear closed-toe shoes (I made it with rubber sandals) insect repellent and bring sunscreen. Along with the plethora of information from our guides we saw an amazing amount of wildlife, animals & plants. Also don’t forget to bring a bottle or two of water with you, you’ll need it.

West Africa 5: Banjul

Heading back now to Dakar, we find ourselves at Banjul, located on an island at the mouth of the River Gambia. From here we went ashore to Abuko Nature Reserve and Makasutu Culture Forest.

Exploring Abuko Nature Reserve, The Gambia

Day 15 takes me into one of the most accessible wildlife reserves in Western Africa. The Abuko Nature reserve in The Gambia is home to a variety of monkey species, crocodiles, and a number of other mammals. On my day hiking through the reserve I spot two species of monkeys, a huge monitor lizard and some other creepy crawlers. The Abuko Nature reserve was fantastic, and one of the best things was that I had it all to myself.

Exploring the Gambia Africa's Hidden Gem

The Gambia is a small West African country known for its unique geographical characteristics, vibrant culture, and diverse ecosystems. Situated on the Atlantic coast, it is the smallest country on the African mainland, completely surrounded by Senegal except for its coastline.

The Gambia is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, characterized by lush tropical forests, meandering rivers, and picturesque beaches. The mighty Gambia River, which runs through the heart of the country, is a focal point of life and commerce, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing.

Culturally, The Gambia is incredibly rich, with a blend of ethnic groups including the Mandinka, Fula, Wolof, Jola, and others, each contributing to the country's diverse traditions, languages, and artistic expressions. Traditional music, dance, and storytelling play significant roles in Gambian society, often reflecting themes of community, spirituality, and history.

The capital city, Banjul, located on St. Mary's Island at the mouth of the Gambia River, is a vibrant hub of commerce, administration, and culture. Its bustling markets, colonial-era architecture, and lively waterfront make it a fascinating destination for visitors.

Tourism is a key industry in The Gambia, attracting travelers with its warm climate, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore nature reserves such as the Abuko Nature Reserve, home to diverse wildlife including monkeys, birds, and crocodiles, or relax on the sandy beaches of places like Kololi and Bakau.

Despite its natural beauty and cultural richness, The Gambia faces challenges including poverty, political instability, and environmental degradation. However, efforts are underway to promote sustainable development, preserve natural resources, and improve the well-being of its people.

Overall, The Gambia offers a captivating blend of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and warm hospitality, making it a compelling destination for travelers seeking an authentic African experience.
