A Day In Noumea New Caledonia. Not What We Expected

On a recent cruise we stopped in Noumea New Caledonia for the first time.

What a different day. As with all ports we did very little investigating before we arrived. Instead preferring to arrive without any preconceived ideas.

This is the only port we have ever felt uneasy in when walking around. Since getting back and talking to other passengers we have heard Noumea referred to as the sewer of the Pacific by several people. We wouldn't go that far but next time we will probably stay on the ship.

You can decide for yourself.

Explorer of the Seas, Port of Call-Noumea & Lifou New Caledonia

On Day 4 of our 23 day Transpacific Cruise aboard Explorer of the Seas we make our first Port of Call at Noumea New Caledonia.
Noumea is the largest city and industrial hub of the French territory of New Caledonia. We took the free bus from the working harbor to the shopping area and walked around the city seeing St Joseph's church and purchasing some T shirts. The next day we were made our second stop in Lifou. What a difference. Lifou is a small island (50 miles long) and barely developed. Passengers were put ashore using Explorer's life boats, a new experience for us. We again engaged in a self conducted tour as we canceled the Vanilla House an Oni Wael Animal tour after receiving a letter lowering our expectations of seeing much wildlife. Thanks for watching. Lifou New Caledonia Royal Caribbean Shore Excursion 4K

Lifou New Caledonia Royal Caribbean shore excursion 'Legend of the Seas' Pacific Cruise 4K
Lifou [lifu] is a commune of France in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.

Lifou is made up of Lifou Island in New Caledonia, the largest and most heavily populated of the Loyalty Islands, its smaller neighbour Tiga Island, and several uninhabited islets in between these two. All these islands lie among the Loyalty Islands, 190 km (120 mi) to the northeast of New Caledonia's mainland. At 1,146 km2 (442 sq mi), Lifou Island is the largest atoll in the world.
The town of Wé, on Lifou Island, is the administrative centre of the commune of Lifou as well as the provincial seat of the Loyalty Islands Province.

The first Europeans to have contact with Lifouans were whalers, who had very limited, and certainly not friendly, communications with them. Sandalwood traders also came to New Caledonia around 1841.

By the mid-19th century, there were Anglican missionaries at work on Lifou, although there had been natives and Polynesian immigrants doing religious work before then. In 1843, French Catholic missionaries arrived on Lifou; shortly afterward, the Anglicans and Catholics became involved in a religious war that lasted until the French takeover of Lifou in 1864. The missionaries even established a school on Lifou Island, and from 1840 to the early 20th century taught most of the population to read. They did enough religious work that in 1998 the Lifouans were referred to as devout Christians.

Lifou is a popular cruise port, with many cruises coming from Australia. The most common port-of-call is Easo; the ships anchor just off the island and tender passengers ashore, being too large for the wharf there. Lifou is known for its snorkeling.
