Why Single-Origin Coffee Is So Expensive | So Expensive Food | Insider Business

Single-origin specialty coffee can cost over $30 per pound, more than five times the average price of 1 pound of ground coffee in the US. “Specialty” is the term for the highest-quality coffee, and aficionados describe its taste with words more frequently used by sommeliers, like “floral” or “fruity.” Reaching this level of quality requires investment and labor at every step of production. But despite the prices a roasted bag of single-origin coffee can reach in the world’s wealthiest countries, the farmers who handpick each coffee cherry struggle to earn a profit.

We went to Kenya to find out what it takes to grow high-quality coffee, and why it’s so expensive.

Handlebar Coffee - Midtown Promo

About a month ago I shot and and edited this short promo for the amazing folks at Handlebar Coffee in Santa Barbara. Along with this extended version, I built a shorter (under 60 second) version for them to share on Instagram, but I didn't want to share the full version here until they'd shared it publicly first.

This little promo was a lot of fun to shoot, and getting to have a look behind the scenes as they prepared this new cafe to open to the public for the first time was a real treat. Thanks to everyone at Handlebar for everything. I had a blast and am so psyched at how it all turned out!

Video: Dansplaining Kona Coffee

I Dansplain Kona Coffee and why it is one of the most expensive coffees in the world.

I will discuss why Kona's sunny mornings, rainy afternoons, and mild nights combined with mineral-rich volcanic soil create perfect coffee growing conditions.

Are you drinking real Kona coffee? Probably not. Only hand-picked coffee from the Kona region can be branded as Kona Coffee. Beans sold at Costco, Wal-Mart and other retailers are usually the leftover inferior beans if they are even from Kona at all.

What is a peaberry anyway? Why do they have superior flavor? And why do they cost so much?

Pour yourself a cup of joe and I will dansplain everything.

BEHIND THE FLAVOR W/ THEORY COFFEE ROASTERS

Theory Coffee Roasters is more than another trendy coffee shop. Just take a look at their track record. They won a gold medal at Golden Bean North America, the nation’s largest roasting competition. They've roasted over 167,000 pounds of beans, which are sourced from all across the world. They were even the sole coffee provider for Twitter’s HQ in San Francisco. Theory isn't average; they're world-class. What's more, they're locating right here in Redding!

In this video, iconic barista Joel Lohner (recipient of a Q-Grader license, which is the equivalent to a wine sommelier in the coffee industry) gives a step-by-step walkthrough on how they make their perfect latte. If you’re a Redding local, or just visiting the area, you won't regret checking out one of their locations!

Roasting coffee at home is easy and saves you hundreds of $$$

I buy coffee beans from here:
And also from Amazon, but it is hit and miss there.

If I have smaller beans, usually roast them for about 11 mins. For regular size for 12 mins at 200C = 390F.

My air fryer is ninja foodi 10 in 1.

250g of roasted beans is 6-12 quid (supermarket/specialty shop). The taste I get is as good as the specialty shop, and I get 1kg of final product for around £10, so these are massive savings.
