Ethiopian Food in 500 YEAR OLD Konso Village in Ethiopia - AMAZING AFRICAN CULTURE!

Due to some unforeseen flight changes in our schedule, we didn’t have much time to explore the Konso Village, but we did have enough time to experience this amazing cultural heritage site, to taste some local food. Visiting the village was a humbling experience, an area of Ethiopia that has been through famine, and to sit down and sample some food from a local family in the village, food they had grown and prepared, was truly special. It is important to remember how fortunate we are to have food on the table.

Konso Village - We began the day in Addis Ababa, where we flew to Arba Minch in southern Ethiopia. After having a quick lunch, some delicious Ethiopian food fish, we drove the bumpy road to Konso. Konso culture and villages are a UNESCO world heritage site, for their preservation of culture and traditions, and it was incredibly special to visit. We toured the village, and I was amazed how advanced their systems were, and their construction.

It was evening and in one of the homes we met a lady who was cooking the family meal for dinner. She was cooking sorghum, moringa leaves, and cassava. It’s not the most flavorful food you’ll taste, but cooked with love, ingredients grown right there, it was a huge honor to share some of their food. It’s a remember of how privileged and fortunate we are to have such abundance.

Thanks to Dessie from Go Addis Tours ( for arranging everything on this trip.

Face-To-Face with a GIANT HYENA in Ethiopia + Huge Ethiopian Street Food Tour in Harar!

►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week:
►T-shirts and caps available now:

Since the first time I visited Ethiopia, I had wanted to visit the ancient city of Harar. On this trip, we had a chance to visit, a very short trip just for one full day, but we made the most of the day and crammed in as much street food and exploring as possible. It was one of the overwhelmingly incredibly days - a day I’m still processing now - the food, the people, the hyenas, WOW!

Dire Dawa, Ethiopia - We landed early in the morning in Dire Dawa, the closest city airport to Harar, to begin this street food tour.

Al-Hashimi Sweets - This is the most well known legendary sweets shop in Dire Dawa. They have a number of different sweets, but we tried their baklava, which was excellent.
Price - 20 ETB ($0.71) for everything

Next in Dire Dawa we stopped at a stall near the bus station to eat some Ethiopian street food breakfast. We ordered ful, mashed fava beans with tuna, and eggs, all served on a communal platter with bread. It was delicious, and cooked right before our eyes. All the ladies were so nice and friendly.
Price - 120 ETB ($4.30) for everything

Harar, Ethiopia - It was about an hour drive from Dire Dawa to Harar, but a beautiful drive through the mountains. Harar is an ancient walled city, a maze of back alleys and walking footpaths. We arrived to Harar, dropped off our stuff at the guest house, and continue on exploring. It happened to be Ramadan when we were in Harar, and Harar is a predominantly Muslim city. So we had a chance to stop by a few places where they were preparing food in large quantities. It was amazing to see and smell.

For our first lunch we stopped at a local restaurant that Hailu took us to. Along with a spread of Ethiopian food, one of the main dishes we got was gomen besiga, which is a type of collard greens with meat. It was incredibly good, as was the dulet.
Price - 165 ETB ($5.92) for everything

Harar is one of the cities that everywhere you look, there’s something fascinating and interesting happening. We walked around the markets, explored the walled city for a few hours, and snacked on some street food.

Iftar is the evening meal to end the daily Ramadan fast, and we were invited to participate in the meal with our host family at our guest house. The house was beautiful, traditional Harar Ethiopian style. Along with a bunch of different fried snacks, the main dishes of the evening meal were fenugreek stew with injera and barley soup.

Hyena Man - One of the legends of Harar is the hyenas, which go back hundreds of years, believed to chase out evil spirits and enemy, as well as the hyenas playing a role in the Harar culture. One of the edge of town, in the middle of darkness, the hyena man feeds wild hyenas camel meat. Sitting on a rock, hyena on my back, face to face with a giant hyena, was undoubtedly one of the scariest things I’ve ever done.

Fatira - Finally to end this amazing day of Ethiopian street food and attractions in Harar, Dessie and I had a fatira.
Total price (for 2 and drinks) - 120 ETB ($4.30)

Thanks to Go Addis Tours ( for arranging this trip for me. Note: I paid for this tour, but I highly recommend them - they did a great job. And Dessie and Hailu were fantastic!

The Ultimate ETHIOPIAN FOOD TOUR - Street Food and Restaurants in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia!

Thank you to Go Addis Tours ( for taking me on this amazing ultimate food and market tour of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ethiopia is one of my favorite countries in the world for food and travel, and this was my second time to visit, and I was eager to explore and eat as much as possible.

We started early, 5 am in the morning and Go Addis Tours picked me up to start at the wholesale market. Even though the city is still sleeping, Addis Mercato is buzzing from 3 am when trucks full of produce from all over Ethiopia, sell them at the market in Addis Ababa. You’ll find all the ingredients, and massive amounts, that you need to cooking Ethiopian food. It was a good warm up, to get to know some of the ingredients, before starting the day eating Ethiopian food.

We had coffee, and breakfast, both of which were excellent. Later after visiting another market, Dessie took me to his neighborhood to eat shiro wat, one of the greatest of all Ethiopian foods, a thick and rich chickpea stew. I’ve had shiro wat many times before, but never have I seen it fully prepared right in front of me. The shiro was incredibly good, piled onto a bed of injera, and we also ordered fir fir, a mashup of injera, simmered with tomato sauce and berbere.

Next we headed to a fish restaurant in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is landlocked, so all fish is freshwater. We ordered fried fish, and asa lebleb, a mixture of fish sauteed with spices and herbs. Both were excellent, but the asa lebleb was the highlight because it was so flavorful.

Next Ethiopian food meal we went to one of the longtime classic restaurants to eat one of the best platters of beyaynetu in Addis Ababa. Beyaynetu is a mix of vegetarian dishes. It was again, a delicious meal, I especially love the tomato salad there.

For our final meal of the day, and to finish off this extreme Ethiopian food tour, we went to one of the most well known and best quality meat restaurants in Addis Ababa to eat tere siga - raw meat. You are served a variety of chunks of raw beef, delicately sliced. Then you slice it into bite sized pieces on your own, wrap in injera, and dip into chili sauce before taking a bite. It’s awesome. The fried meat version is also very good.

This was an amazing day, and an amazing Ethiopian food tour in Addis Ababa. Thank you Go Addis Tours!

Ethiopia - Konso Tribe Villages

The Konso tribe lives in Southern Ethiopia. Accompagnied by many children we walk around in two villages surrounded by defensive stone walls and look inside the uniquely designed dwellings. We also see the famous wagas (grave markers) and New York, an eroding plateau that reminds of Bryce Canyon.

The traditional Konso villages are located around Konso. Each village consists of nine compounds, one for each clan. They are separated by wooden fences and the round huts are close together. The huts have entrances where you only get on all fours. The interior is very primitive: an elevation to sit, bare animal skins to sleep, a place for food supplies and a fire place in the middle without a chimney. There is no marriage within the clan and boys do not sleep at home, but in a community house. The village has a few places with generation piles: every eighteen years a new generation of leaders is selected and then new generation piles are set up while the old ones are made smaller (the old piles, not the old leaders). Clan leaders and the Konso king live in great loneliness to be able to speak impartially. Wagas (wooden statues) are erected for deceased warriors, depicting the warrior and his victims (humans and animals). Around the villages are well-made terraces. Groups of men and women work the land with primitive wooden tools. We visit the villages of Machekie and Gesergio. Gesergio is nicknamed New York because it is next to sandstone formations reminiscent of skyscrapers. Local beer is drunk for € 0.08 per gourd.

The magical place in konso Ethiopia

Ethiopia has so may things to offer. from its amazing history, monuments, different cultures and tribes to a crazy amazing magical landscape.

konso is a day trip from Arbamench and ofers a beautiful land espe like this one. I was not expecting to find what I found there.

The legend of this place goes something like this

The konso clan leader focala tulma is known to have powers.
He wears a silver bracelet and owns a Rhinoceros
Horn that was given to him by a local hero
And it’s Believed that they also contain his magical power.

The horns are out for public display only on special occasions when there is a religious ceremonies.

One day his sons decided to still his bracelet And the Rhinoceros horns and run away.

When they arrived to this land they lost the bracelet. After looking for it for some time

They decided to spend the night in there
When they wake up they see the bracelet sparkling from faraway.

When they go after it, it disappears and appears in another spot

They realized the bracelet was doing this to get them cought.

So they stabed the land with the Rhinoceros horns and cursed the land to have the form it has today.

And that is the legend of this beautiful place.

Konso People - Ethiopia

Although less celebrated than the colourful Ethnic groups of South Omo Valley of Ethiopia, Konso must rank among the most astounding Ethiopian indigenous people. Mixed agriculturalists, the konso make the most of the hard, rocky slopes that characterise the relatively dry and infertile homeland through a combination of extensive rock terracing, the use of animal dung as fertiliser, crop rotation and hard work.
The most outwardly distinctive feature of konso country is the aesthetically pleasing towns and villages.
Every village consists of a number of sub communities, each of which is centred upon Morra or communal house. This is a tall building with an open sided ground floor supported by Juniper trunks, and a sharply angled thatched roof covering and a wooden ceiling. The ground floor serves as a shaded place where villagers - men, boys and girls, but not grown women - can relax, gossip, play and make important communal decisions.

Many thanks to Afia Tours ( for taking on this amazing village food day trip in Ghana (Note: I paid for this tour, it is not sponsored, but I fully recommend it - it was awesome)!

It was about a three hour drive from Accra to get to the village. The village was somewhere in the central Cape Coast region of Ghana (however no near to the coast, but much inland). The people from the village were so incredibly friendly, and it was one of the most genuinely hospitable and friendly villages I’ve ever visited. It was an honor and privilege to spend time at the village.

As we arrived, they had already started cooking some Ghanaian food specialties. One the menu, we had banku with okra soup, fufu (a staple of West African food) with palm nut soup, and finally fried plantains with beans. All the food was incredibly good, and it was one of the best bowls of fufu I ate during my entire time in Ghana.

Thanks again to Afia Tours ( for setting this up!

Ethiopian Kitfo (ክትፎ) - Best RAW BEEF Ethiopian Food!

Read the full article about Ethiopian kitfo (ክትፎ) right here:

Filmed in October 2013, in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

I first need to start off by saying that Ethiopians love to eat, and their food is incredibly delicious. I knew I loved Ethiopian food before I ever visited the country, but when I was there, I was amazed at just how incredible the food was everywhere I ate. Here's another thing about Ethiopian food, there is plenty of vegetarian food available ( and many people who follow the Ethiopian Orthodox faith normally fast (this means not eating any animals products on Wednesdays and Fridays, and during lent). That being said, meat is loved in Ethiopia, and one of the most famous and most loved dishes is minced raw beef known as kitfo (ክትፎ).

Now it can be a bold statement to say that a certain food is the most beloved dish of a country, but the only reason I say that is because just about every Ethiopian I know, friends in Kenya, USA, and from watching people in Ethiopia, I really think that it's one of the dishes that's most loved by Ethiopians. Kitfo (ክትፎ) is a special food, it's not something that's eaten on a daily basis, it's eaten more during celebrations.

Before going to Ethiopia, I had eaten kitfo (ክትፎ) on numerous occasions at restaurants, so it was a dish I knew I wanted to eat when I was in Addis Ababa. I decided to go to a restaurant known as Yohannes Kitfo - this is a kitfo house, in other words, you come to this restaurant to eat one dish only: kitfo. The restaurant is actually pretty nice, tucked back in the quiet neighborhood and in a nice peaceful place to dine. There are two different methods of kitfo (ክትፎ), the leb leb version is slightly cooked, and the other version is served completely raw. I decided to go completely raw in an effort to taste the truest taste of the beef, but the leb leb version might be a little bit of a safer option when it comes to bacteria. But that being said, they use only the freshest meat so that the beef is high quality and excellent to eat raw.

What exactly is Kitfo (ክትፎ)? It's minced raw beef that's mixed with a mitmita, a blend of Ethiopian spices, and then some Ethiopian butter known as nitter kibbeh is mixed into the meat. The spices and butter give the minced beef some extreme delicious flavor. The meat is served with injera, the staple, and also some extra pieces of hard bread known as kocho - this was my first ever time to sample this bread made from ensete (similar to a banana) flour. The kitfo (ክትፎ) was served in a bowl, with gomen (collard greens) and a couple of different cheese on the side. I was so excited to dig in for my first bite as soon as it arrived, it was a huge pile of meat! That first bite was absolutely sensational, I could hardly contain how good it actually was! The meat was so well seasoned and it really just melted in my mouth. The kitfo went extremely well with the injera and also the kocho bread.
