Ethiopia by HandZaround

'Ehtiopia' is a personal project of travellers HandZaround.com funded in majority by them and created in their free time.

Read more about the film here:

'Green highlands, barren deserts, impassable lowlands, sparkling waterfalls, glistening lakes, bustling towns. We can’t describe Ethiopia with one word, unless we reach for ‘diversity’.

‘Ethiopia’ takes you on a journey off the beaten track through Northern lands of the country. It offers you a glimpse into the life of Amharic people living in the highlands, a chance to take part in important religious celebrations of Meskel, and a visit through a myriad of majestic Ethiopian landscapes, varying from the hottest desolate reds of Danakil Depression, to tremendous Blue Nile Falls, to the colourful mixture of cultures that you can find in the country’s capital, Addis Ababa.

Although the film is our personal tribute to this unique and vast country, it was impossible to include all that Ethiopia comprises of. We have yet to visit the South, East and West of Ethiopia. For more information about the places featured in the film, head to the article on our website:
handzaround.com/journal-1/ethiopia-travel-film

We are of course aware that Ethiopia consists of Muslim population, and other religions, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time and funds to represent the whole cultural, religious and natural landscape of Ethiopia.

In our description and in our understanding the word 'diverse' applies mainly to Ethiopian geography ('Green highlands, barren deserts, impassable lowlands, sparkling waterfalls, glistening lakes, bustling towns. We can’t describe Ethiopia with one word, unless we reach for ‘diversity’ '), and in our opinion Ethiopia is very diverse in that sense, especially in comparison to the countries we come from.'

Meskel Festival I Episode #9 I Backpacking Africa Travel Vlog HandZaround

The Meskel Festival is celebrated every year across Ethiopia on the 26th or 27th of September. Of all the celebration, the one that happens at Meskel Square, in Addis Ababa, is by far the largest. Thousands of people come together in an amazing spectacle to commemorate the finding of the True Cross in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
We were lucky enough to get some tourist passes that allowed us to get right in the middle of the celebration and experience everything up close and personal.

Many thanks to ETT ( ) for organising the passes for us. As usual, all the opinions in this vlog are our own.

Blue Nile Waterfalls I Episode #13 I Backpacking Africa Travel Vlog HandZaround

Our favourite place in the whole of Ethiopia was the Blue Nile Waterfalls just outside of Bahir Dar! They were seriously impressive and we had such a great time camping literally 25m from their edge.

Afar Triangle by HandZaround

Afar Triangle is located in North East of Ethiopia. It's a land that belongs to the Afar people - one of the ethnic groups of the country, which has a very distinctive culture and tradition, different to the other regions.

Afar is famous for the Danakil Depression - Erta Ale Volcano, Salt Lake Assale, Dallol and salt mountains. The temperatures in this part of the world are amongst the highest noted on Earth and the Danakil Depression is one of the lowest points in the world. Erta Ale volcano has one of the six active lava lakes on Earth.

We trekked to the volcano and spent four days overall exploring the Danakil Depression. The temperatures were unbearable and the whole trip was difficult, but the landscapes were out of this world.

In the Mountains of Tigray - Rock Hewn Churches of Ethiopia

Tigray Churches are famous for their picturesque location, beautiful history and somewhat difficulty to reach. Whilst some of them are an off-road drive and a 5 minute walk up the stone stairs, others require walking for hours, climbing vertical rock shelves, and an ability to let go of your fear of heights!! We opted for trekking and climbing - we captured it in film and in our Tigray Churches story.

Churches of Tigray I Episode #8 I Backpacking Africa Travel Vlog HandZaround

With our harnesses on, we made the treacherous climb up to one of the Churches of Tigray.

In the Gheralta Mountains of Northern Ethiopia, you can find some of the most inaccessible churches in the world. Abuna Yemata is literally carved into the side of 300m high free standing rock, and requires visitors to take few risk in order just to get to the front door.

Get ready for some seriously impressive views!

Working In 140°F Heat - Salt Desert, Ethiopia

Unforgiving temperatures of up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit beat down on these hardworking salt miners every single day. The salt mines, situated in the Afar triangle, stretch across 100,000 square kilometres and at their lowest point are more than 300 feet below sea level. Professional travel photographer and videographer Joel Santos travelled to the area to capture the dry beauty of this brutal expanse of land.

Nairobi, Jungles, Safaris and the Coast - Kenya Trip - a film by HandZaround

From clubbing in Nairobi and riding motorbike through Kibera slum, to trekking through the wild jungle with wild animals and lounging on by the beach with a cold Tusker - we were there to film it all.

Two of the toughest weeks filming culminated in this film for the boys from Charlie's Travels in Kenya.

Ethiopia as a Travel Destination

Ethiopia. One of those countries that we all have heard but knew very little about. The mention of this country brings an exotic sound where one might imagine well-fashioned and accessorized tribes in a mountainous backdrop. That’s how it was for me at least.

Luckily, that daydreaming had come to an end. The nature of my work, fortunately, gave me the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this country.

Ethiopia is a tourist destination like no other. You feel like you’re one of the first ones there. Like you are travelling back in time. Don’t take Ethiopia lightly because its profound history will make you question about yourself too. And after you’ve been, you will not return as the same person.

Degosach Eco Lodge - by HandZaround

High above the clouds of Lalibela you will find Degosach Eco Lodge. The highest accommodation in all of Africa is situated some 3800m above sea level.

Using traditional techniques, the lodges are designed to give the local communities employment opportunities, and at the same time, allow tourists to experience the real highland life of Ethiopia.

We hope that you get to visit Degosach Eco Lodge one day.

The Danakil Depression (part 2) I Episode #7 I Backpacking Africa Travel Vlog HandZaround

Who knew that Ethiopia had such places?

In the far northeastern corner of Ethiopia, you will find the Danakil Depression. Hot, barren and 120m below sea level, you really feel like you're on another planet! This place is like nothing we have ever seen before and we're so excited to share our next Vlog with you.

Oromia Horse Galloping Ceremony I Episode #11 I Backpacking Africa Travel Vlog HandZaround

Deep in the hills of the villages of Oromia, you can find a special ceremony that happens around Meskel in Ethiopia. The Horse Galloping Ceremony was truly an amazing sight filled with people, horses, colours and new traditions that we had no idea about.

Read more about it here:

Just so you have the whole picture: We were supposed to collaborate with an Ethiopian tour company - they were supposed to take us on a tour and in exchange we were supposed to film it. We were trying to collect as much information from them about the event as possible, to ensure that we were mentally and technically prepared - this proved to be challenging but we gave it a chance anyways. Our frustration came from not being told what was happening and from the tour company using local people to promote their services without local people’s consent. In the end we did create a film from the day to share with you this unique celebration, but we decided not to share details of the tour company that organised it (or rather dis-organised it) because we wouldn’t recommend the company to anyone and because it was one not-so-positive experience. All in all, we are happy and grateful anyways that local people let us be there and that we were able to witness a special celebration like this.
