The Ancient Art of Eskista Dance in Ethiopia - Journey to the Roots!

Men, women, and children perform the Amhara ethnic group's traditional dance known as the Eskista. It is renowned for its distinctive emphasis on vigorous shoulder movement, which it shares with the Tigrinya people of neighboring Eritrea's shim-shim dance. The dance is defined by the shoulders rolling and bouncing, the chest jilting, and the neck pushing in different directions. Even though Eskista is often performed to traditional Ethiopian music, it can also be done to more contemporary music, such as that used in contemporary Ethiopian music videos. Eskista dancing is undoubtedly one of the most technical types of traditional dance because of how demanding it is.

There are at least 20 different regional versions of the Eskista, each with a distinct origin and a long history of its own, albeit the majority are founded on the challenging existence of the typical farmer in the Ethiopian highlands.

Eskista is a traditional Ethiopian dance performed by both men and women that is known for its unique emphasis on intense shoulder movement. The dance is characterized by rolling the shoulder blades, bouncing the shoulders, and jilting the chest. Eskista is typically performed to traditional Ethiopian music, but can often be incorporated into modern forms of music such as is played in modern Ethiopian music videos. The complex nature of eskista makes it one of the most highly technical forms of traditional dance.Wikipedia

#Ethiopian “#eskista” is the nation's most beloved, most #iconic dance. “Eskista” means “dancing shoulders” in #Amharic, and dance our shoulders shall! Eskista dancers generally form rows or line up in groups and actively engage everyone in the room with their shoulder shakes and shimmies.
#eskista, Some of the ideas and themes in this #dance are actually inspired from the relations between the #genders, #work life and #religion. It also is said that this dance was invented because of the snakes. #Ethiopian people were often observing the “#dance”/movements of the snake, shaking in the same way their #neck #music
