Are YOU planning a Japan trip in 2018? Looking for things to do in Hiroshima? The Onomichi Temple Walk is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese culture by checking out numerous Japanese shrines and temples (over 25 in Onomichi), visit Cat Alley and take the ropeway (or walk) up Mount Senko-ji.

However! Onomichi is a typical small Japanese town (almost like a ghost town and pretty deserted) with most local shops being closed on certain weekdays, which is frustrating! To actually find some life in Onomichi head to the area clos to Onomichi Station, where you can find Onomichi U2, with places to shop and eat.

Please note the negativity and sarcasm in this video is exactly that and is a reflection of how it can feel being in Japan for an extended period! Extreme honesty is a trademark of my channel and no offence is intended - Japan is awesome!

Overall Onomichi is probably a great place to visit in Japan, just not in early February when it's freezing cold and snowing!

Onomichi: Japan's City of Nostalgia 尾道 | A Travel Movie

Subscribe to my channel here. Thank you so much for a thumb-up!

This is a short film about Onomichi, the Japanese city of nostalgia, cats and steep hills and stairs. Onomichi is located in Hiroshima Prefecture and has been an inspiration for generations of filmmakers, like Yasujiro Ozu classic Tokyo Story (Tokyo Monogatari).

Onomichi Hiroshima, Japan. 広島,日本 (Temple walk)

Onomichi is a city located in Hiroshima prefecture. It is a small city but it is famous for its Temple walk. The walk is about two and a half kilometres long.
Unfortunately I didn't video as much as I should have. There is much more to see on the Temple walk with many shops along the way. The best time to go is spring as there are many sakura blossoms along the temple walk.

Island hopping by bike: Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido cycling route runs 70 kms from Onomichi in Hiroshima, to Imabari in Ehime prefecture. It winds through islands, and over the bridges connecting them. July might not be the most comfortable time to ride it, as we discovered, but it was still a lot of a fun.

Episode 35 - Japan / Onomichi, Hiroshima & Yudanaka

JAPAN: ONOMICHI, HIROSHIMA & NAGANO
Our last days in Japan! After a few more visits to the Kyoto temples close to the train station, we left Kyoto for Onomichi by train. Daniel had read a lot of nice things about this town located 280km on the Japanese sea coast. A lot of small islands are connected by bridges and ferries to the main island and bicycle ways have been specifically set for cyclists to ride from one island to the other. And those who know Daniel, will now understand why we decided to stop in Onomichi! Eiji who had never done this part of Japan, joined us in Onomichi by car.
We met in the afternoon at the guest house and went for a walk before sunset. We climbed the numerous stairs of this sloppy city before heading to an excellent sushi & sashimi restaurant in the centre of town.

Early morning we left for the harbour to rent our bicycle and start our tour. Daniel and Eiji went for regular ones but Magali wanted to try an e-bike. Unfortunately larger bicycles equipped with electric assistance were all booked so she ended up with one with small wheels, never mind she took it. We then embarked for a quick sea crossing on one of the ferries to reach the first island. The weather was rather cloudy and windy but cycling between the mandarins fields and the Japanese sea was very interesting and nice.

We stopped many times on our way to take pictures and shot the scenery. We bought mandarins directly from the farmer! After crossing 3 bridges and a stop in a very local restaurant to have sashimi octopus which comes directly from the area, we took a boat to come back to our initial starting point. It was an excellent day and we finished it beautifully going to a public bath a few km away, to relax and have dinner on-site.

The next day we left for Hiroshima in the morning and met our host at 88hiroshima guest house. After check-in we left to visit the city centre and the monuments dedicated to the Bomb-A events. It was very informative and also very sad to understand all the suffering the people from Hiroshima endured in 1945 and many years later with the side effects of the radiations. A lot of survivors can be found in the Memorial Park and around the Museum to give their testimony.

We chose to come to Hiroshima to also visit the Miyajima island and its famous Torii. You probably already seen a view of this majestic red door and its picture reflecting in the water. We were actually impressed to find out that there is a lot to do and to see on this island. It is full of temples and pagodas and has of course a main shrine but it is also a good hiking location. We didn’t hike to the top but did take the ropeway all the way up and came down by foot (about 1,5h). The view from the very top of Mt. Misen is very rewarding with a 360 degrees view of the sea, the forests and the sacred sites. We must say we loved Miyajima a lot!

WE SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
The sushis! We became sushi and sashimi addicts to the max! We of course had them before in Switzerland and other places but sushi and sashimi in Japan is a totally different story. Our preferences went to the local salmon, the squid, the octopus and the red snapper. Nigiri sushi were also excellent with a specific note to the Japanese macquerel!
Our brief visit to the Snow Monkey Park in Jigokudani, 45min. North of Nagano. These little creatures are so cute in their hot spring, we think the images speak for themselves!

ACCOMMODATIONS
Hiroshima: we loved staying at the 88 Hiroshima guest house, a traditional Japanese home with a few rooms, a great living room and a kitchen to share with other guests. The place is spotless, peaceful and zen. It is located only 20min. ride by bus from the city centre (nr 29). There is a lot of information on what to do and what to see at the guest house. Kengo, the owner was a backpacker once and he knows the exact the travellers needs. We had a very good rest at your home, thank you again for your warm welcome, we wish you all the best and hope to meet you again in a near future!
Yudanaka/Yamanouchi: Zen Hostel, a lovely renovated old ryokan very close to the train station. Tatami rooms and dormitories are available as well as a nice cafe/lounge.

RESTAURANTS
Onomichi: Hanaakari, one of the best sashimi we ever tried.
Onomichi: SpA 尾道平原温泉 ぽっぽの湯, the restaurant is part of a private SpA with a lot of facilities. The SpA is very popular and it is nice to have dinner in a typical Japanese uniform/suit right after a relaxed bath. The food was excellent and reasonably price. We could taste the Yamakake Donburi once again (dish of red tuna and sticky mountain yam that we firstly discovered in one of the Onsen during our first days in Japan).

Onomichi ✿ Kosanji: Hiroshima's Most Beautiful Secret - 尾道市の耕三寺 - Japan As It Truly Is

Few make it to Onomichi, fewer still to Kosanji - one of Japan's most beautiful temples. The detail and size are astonishing.
Kosanji is not old, though. It was expanded from a villa made in 1927 by an industrialist for his mother. After she died in 1934, in 1936 Kōsanji grew into a temple built in memorial to all mother's love for their children, and the current form took over 3 decades to construct.
One of the most fantastic elements is the Hell Cave, combining elements that remind you of Buddhist cosmology, Disneyland, Halloween, and Dante's Inferno.
For experienced Japan travelers, if you think you have seen some of the buildings elsewhere, you are right - there are clones of the Yomeimon Gate in Nikko and the Byodoin Phoenix Hall in Uji. The amount of detail put into the entire temple is simply astounding, and you haven't seen the best of Japan until you see this place.
People are often surprised how colorful the place is, a lot more like SE Asian temples, and traditionalists may frown at how bright, even gaudy, some things may look. Some Japanese fret at how it's more of a museum than a temple. But after getting templed out in other cities like Kyoto, where everything can become a blur, you certainly won't forget this place long after you leave it.
Additionally, there is the Miraishin no Oka, a massive stone structure at the top of the hill made of marble shipped in from Italy.
Sadly, few travelers know this place exists, and they leave Onomichi thinking it is just a quaint hillside walk though some humdrum small temples.

Episode 34 - Japan / Nikko area, Kyoto & Nara

JAPAN: NIKKO & KYOTO
Our 2nd week in Japan and this time a bit or better completely off the beaten path! Thanks to our friend Eiji, we discovered a totally different Japan with the Northern countryside and the Onsens, traditional Japanese baths which are more like a religion in the entire country.
Did we already say we love Japan? We do indeed and you will soon understand why watching our video and reading the lines below.

NIKKO: DAY 1
We left our hotel early in the morning to meet Eiji further North of Tokyo. Traffic jam can be very bad in the city and he suggested to meet a bit out of the way to avoid wasting time in transportation. We then hit the road to the Nikko prefecture and the site of Nikkō Tōshō-gū, a shrine and a temple, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu the first shogun of the Edo era, amongst the most visited sites in Japan. Eiji had booked in an old Ryokan in Itamuro to spend the night and have our first Onsen, Japanese bath, experience. We got a very good dinner and got to bed early to be ready for the next day.

NIKKO: DAY 2 & 3
We visited the Nikko National Park and took several little walks, in swamp area and close to the sleeping volcano. The scenery was fantastic and the fall foliage beautiful. It was chilly due to the altitude but the scenery was so great that we forgot about the cold. Eiji arranged our overnight in another Ryokan for the next two nights, the Kita Onsen. The guest house is divided in several old buildings all connected from the inside. The structure is 350 years old. It was very chilly when we arrived at Kita Onsen and Eiji teached us how to use the “Kotatsu”, the famous and unique, heating table to warm up the room. Then we went to the baths, really hot ones, to get warm. Wow it was a great experience! We kept going and returning to the baths during the two days at Kita Onsen. We loved the Japanese bath way and we will never forget about this, thanks to Eiji.

We left the Kita Onsen in the morning and made a last stop in the public bath close by. Another very interesting experience. Magali being the only Westerner in the room got the full attention of the Japanese ladies. It was very much fun. Then back to Tokyo to take a train to Kyoto. We arrived in the afternoon and had time to explore the train station and its surrounding. We did some shopping and had early dinner before taking the Subway to meet our AirBnB host, Mika, a nice Japanese lady who speaks several languages and who’s been travelling extensively. We had a nice tatami room to ourselves in Northern Kyoto.

KYOTO: DAY 1
After a good night rest, we decided to go to the Northern Western part of Kyoto to visit the Gingaku-Ji, the Golden Temple, first and then the Ninna-ji Temple to finish with the Gion district, to see the Yasaka Jin-Ja Park and with some luck spot a Maiko, entertainment lady. Unfortunately no Maiko around but a very good day walking and enjoying Kyoto, a lot!

KYOTO: DAY 2
Head to the South West to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine! One of the most photographed site in Kyoto. This is the famous park with hundreds of “Torii” red door used in sacred sites. Being a Sunday the site was very packed with tourists but as soon as we started hiking uphill the crowd was less and less. Daniel fell literally in love with the site and all the red doors. Magali visited the site 6 years ago and apart from the Torii nothing was the same. A new direct path from the station had been set up, English sign boards were every where! And most of all, when she did visit the site at that time, she was almost the only tourist around, she had to ask for directions from the train station as there was nearly no information! What a change! Being on the pole position of the Kyoto Activities on Tripadvisor.com must have helped (!) Back to Kyoto station we walked to the Toji Temple to see the highest 5 storey pagoda of Japan. The pagoda and the two other halls of Toji including golden Buddhas and war kings images were absolutely stunning!

KYOTO/NARA: DAY 3
We took a train early to Nara, another Imperial city, 40 min. from Kyoto. We walked around and visited the major Temple Todai-Ji and a few shrines. The main attraction here are the deers that roam freely around. We bought special deer biscuits and had fun feeding the cute beasts. Another beautiful day in the fresh air for us!

WE SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
Every bath in the Onsen, every temple, every shrine, every garden, every leave falling from the trees, every deer that approached us searching for biscuits, absolutely everything!

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Route near Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan

The Shimanami Kaido Cycle Route links the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan through a series of bridges and islands in the Seto Inland Sea.

The 70km cycle trail takes you between islands across a series of impressive bridges with special cycle lanes and for added fun there's a network of ferries to help you get back. We rented bikes in Onomichi and set off to explore some of the trail which is a great day out for those who enjoy cycling.
