I Visited China's Most Controversial Region ???????? (Uyghur Autonomous Region)

Xinjiang, Uyghur Autonomous Region - China's most controversial area
Previous video from rural China➡️

Urumqi, Xinjiang China - I traveled to the far west of China to visit the Uyghur Autonomous Region. This region is all over western media for not so good reasons. But as usual, I am curious to see things with my own eyes. So, i booked a flight to Urumqi, which is the capital of the Xinjiang province in west China. This is by the way also the biggest province in China. According to some comments on my channel, I would not even be allowed to enter, as the region is apparently closed for foreigners. Well, I was able to enter without any problems and soon after I found myself exploring the city center of Urumqi. It was freezing cold there though: Around -20 °C (-4 °F). Join me as we explore around to get to know this region of China, meet local Ughyur Muslims, try local food and see what Xinjiang, China is really like!

Welcome to FarWestChina | An Introduction to Josh

Josh Summers first arrived to Xinjiang, China in 2006 as an ignorant American traveler looking for adventure. He began blogging about the region in order to inform friends and family about what was happening but because there is so little written about this part of the world in English, his articles quickly gained readers all over the world.

At that point, FarWestChina was born. Josh states that the mission of the website is to Bridge the gap of understanding between Xinjiang and the rest of the world. He does that through writing, photography and - as you can see here - through video.

Josh is author of the best-selling travel guide Xinjiang | A Traveler's Guide to Far WestChina that you can find here:

The Holy Month of Ramadan in Xinjiang, China

The video was shot in Kashgar, Xinjiang. An imam from a community mosque, an old uyghur who stops fasting because of illness, a father and son as pottery makers are chosen to tell how the ordinary Muslim in Xinjiang spend their Holy Month of Ramadan in 2013.

********Sorry for one mistake in the video: Ramadan of 2013 started from July 10th till August 8th in Common Era not in the Islamic calendar. The month of Ramada is always the 9th month in Islamic calendar. In 2013, when the documentary was shot, August 8th is the Eid al-Fitr, and the 1st day of the 10th month in Islamic calendar.***********

*********************

When I first visited Kashgar's Old City in 2008, the mud brick homes that had stood on that spot for centuries formed a labyrinth of alleyways that was fun to wander around.

Then, in 2009, the Chinese government deemed these homes unsafe and decided to tear them down and rebuild them completely, much to the horror of the international community.

They tore down everything except a small portion on the east side of the city.

Now, eight years later, I have decided to revisit this ancient Silk Road oasis and find out what has happened to this new Old City. Did they rebuild it well? How does it compare to the old Old City? What do the locals think?

Join me as I explore the back alleys of Kashgar's Old City, try a bit of Uyghur street food and even get a personal tour of an old Uighur home!

Xinjiang Road Trip Impressions | Urumqi, Turpan, Hami, Qitai

In July 2021, me and my girlfriend went on a road trip through parts of Xinjiang. We got to experience this unique part of China at our own pace and saw some amazing places along the way in Urumqi, Turpan, Kumul, Balikun, and Qitai. This video is merely meant to share some impressions from this trip - without much commentary or context. I am still not sure whether I will work on more videos about travelling in Xinjiang, but felt compelled to at least publish some of the footage from this trip.

Xinjiang Province (Documentary Vlog) | The Long Road Ep. 46

I finally made it to CHINA!!! Or did I?
After Kyrgyzstan I visited the Xinjiang Province. While traveling here, a question constantly popped up in my head. Is this China? That's why decided to make this video a little bit different.
If you find any mistakes in my little research let me know.

After crossing the border I first visited Kashgar, from there I headed to Urumqi from where I left for Tuerpan. Unfortunately I had to go to Shanghai, so I couldn't see as much of Xinjiang as I wanted to. But I also wasn't well prepared tbh...

Beautiful Xinjiang China Deep Deep into the Mountains (Uyghur Land)

I was here to shoot a TV commercial deep into the mountains of Xinjiang, China.. Xinjiang is located Northwest of China and borders Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India and to the south is Tibet. We drove 3 hours into the mountains and parked by a local village. It was a great experience. The village people served us lamb and fried rice in the biggest pot i have ever seen. There were no toilets and the only power there was the generators that we brought. No cell phone reception up there either. We saw horses, goats, cows, etc. It was pure nature. I am not sure what the locals spoke there but obviously they dont speak English and they did not speak Chinese as well. Maybe they where Uyhur people I am not really sure. Maybe some of you can advise. Also what i thought was interesting was the fact that they bathed in the river and used mud as soap. I would not mind going off the grid for a month and just living here.

Xinjiang (Uyghur: شىنجاڭ‎‎, ULY: Shinjang; Mandarin pronunciation: [ɕíntɕjɑ́ŋ]; Chinese: 新疆; pinyin: Xīnjiāng), officially Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,[5] is an autonomous region of China in the northwest of the country. It is the largest Chinese administrative division, the 8th largest country subdivision in the world, spanning over 1.6 million km2 and the most populous amongst the ten largest national subdivisions. It contains the disputed territory of Aksai Chin administered by China. Xinjiang contains China's smaller border with Russia (which is 40 km/24 mi long; the remainder of the China-Russia border is 3,605 km/2,240 mi long, and is taken up by the Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang provinces), but its other international borders are with Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. It is also bordered, to the south, by Tibet, easily its longest border, when including the Eastern Tibetan disputed territories. It has abundant oil reserves and is China's largest natural gas-producing region.

It is home to a number of ethnic groups including the Uyghur, Han, Kazakhs, Tajiks, Hui, Kyrgyz, and Mongols.[6] More than a dozen autonomous prefectures and counties for minorities are in Xinjiang. Older English-language reference works often refer to the area as Chinese Turkestan.[7] Xinjiang is divided into the Dzungarian Basin in the north and the Tarim Basin in the south by a mountain range. Only about 4.3% of Xinjiang's land area is fit for human habitation.[8]

Malaysia Drone Flight: Asia is Earths largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the Eastern and Northern Hemispheres. It shares the continental landmass of Eurasia with the continent of Europe and the continental landmass of Afro-Eurasia with both Europe and Africa. Asia covers an area of 44,579,000 square kilometres, about 30% of Earths total land area and 8.7% of the Earths total surface area. The continent, which has long been home to the majority of the human population, was the site of many of the first civilizations. Asia is notable for not only its overall large size and population, but also dense and large settlements, as well as vast barely populated regions. Its 4.5 billion people constitute roughly 60% of the worlds population. In general terms, Asia is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Indian Ocean, and on the north by the Arctic Ocean. The border of Asia with Europe is a historical and cultural construct, as there is no clear physical and geographical separation between them. It is somewhat arbitrary and has moved since its first conception in classical antiquity. [wikipedia // Google]
