Epic Day Trip to Bran Castle + Thunderstorm In Brasov

We had never been to #Transylvania before...and wow was it beautiful! We took a day trip to #BranCastle (AKA Dracula's Castle) to learn about the history of vampires in Transylvania right from the source. It was pretty cool learning about the evil Vlad the Impaler (a real Romanian ruler!) and getting to go inside the castle.

Next, we headed off to the nearby town of #Brasov. We didn't get to do much before dark storm clouds starting forming overhead. Before we knew it, we were getting poured on! Don't feel too bad for us--we waited out the storm with a beer in a nearby cafe :)

Big thank you to Mr. Tripp's Tours for accomodating us on this awesome day! If you want to book this tour, here's the link:

Best Of Transylvania: This Is BRASOV! (Romania Travel Vlog)

Medieval Brasov is one of Romania's most beautiful cities, right in the middle of the Carpathian mountains. Brasov is very picturesque and located in Transylvania (yes, it's where Dracula lives). It has maintained its medieval character throughout the centuries. Even though it is quite popular, it is a very relaxing and scenic city. Oh and Kim had been waiting for days to try out this great Romanian dessert (it involved a lot of cream, red fruit coulis and a super gooey filling...) - and we found the perfect spot in Brasov to try it!

We hope you enjoyed this Brasov Romania travel vlog, which is an easy day trip from Bucharest Romania by train if you want. We can't wait to show you Egypt! :) NEXT UP: exploring the historic old town of Cairo, Egypt. Care to join us on another adventure? ???? ABOUT US
Hi! We are Helen and Tim. We are adventure travelers who saved up some money to travel full-time in Jan 2023. We are based in Portland, Oregon, and have been together for over 10+ years and share a love for the great outdoors through hiking, camping, skiing, and more! We grew up in Dallas, Texas (Helen) & DuBois, Pennsylvania (Tim).

Our goal is to hike the world one mountain at a time. We love to inspire people to get outdoors whether the adventure is big or small. Post-hike, we enjoy the local flavors and foods, and a cold drink (beer for Tim and kombucha for Helen).

There is so much in the world to see, even if it is in our own backyards. We started filming our adventures in the PNW and that has evolved into filming our international travels.

Thanks so much for watching! We will see you on the next trail! ????

Dracula Castle Tour in 4K | The Bran Castle | Bram Stoker's Dracula Castle

The Bran Castle in the Transylvanian region of Romania is an absolute beauty. It was built by the Transylvanian Saxons between 1377-1388 to act as a fort against the Ottoman invasion.

Bram Stoker's ''Count Dracula'' character was inspired by Vlad III or Vlad the Impaler who was the Voivode of Wallachia (military commander) in the mid-1400s. Although he never lived in Bran Castle, Bram Stoker's description of Dracula's castle matches partially with the Bran Castle. Hence, the communist-era government of Romania decided to market it as ''Dracula's castle'' during the cold war days.

The Bran Castle housed the Royals in the Transylvania and Brasov regions. Queen Marie, who has been credited to unite Romania, lived here in the early 1900s.

A lot of the collection of arts, decor, and furniture in the castle belongs to Queen Marie. Further, the castle also has a display of tools, pottery, and some items of everyday use by the local people in the Transylvanian villages. The third floor of the castle has an interactive display of mythical Romanian horror characters like the Ieles, the Vampires, Strigoi and Werewolves. The outskirt of the castle has a breathtaking view which you can see at the end of my video.

There is special lighting in the castle during Halloween. Elon Musk hosted his Halloween Party in the castle in 2022. Several celebrities of the likes of Angelina Jolie and the serial entrepreneur Peter Thales were part of this party.

Besides Dracula, Romanian mythical creatures like Strigoi, Werewolf, and Iele have inspired modern-day pop culture. The Ieles are the female mythical Romanian characters who have magic skills and great seductive power men. They are similar to the nymphs in Greek mythology. Strigois are the bad vampires who have risen from the grave after they are dead. Werewolves are working-class (peasants) monsters. They are humans who can transform themselves into wolves. Several movies and TV series have been made based on these characters.

Brasov Romania, Things to Do (Expat Quality of Life Brasov Romania 2022)

In today's video we visit the city of Brasov, Romania's 7th largest city with a metro area of 382,000 people. Brasov and surrounding communities have many foreigners calling the region home due to the low cost of living and quality of life. The average US Retiree on Social Security receives $1,550 a month, and a couple on Social Security receives over $2,500 a month. A US Expat living on Social Security can expect a lower cost of living in Romania when compared to the living costs in the US.

We take a look at the Quality of Life in Brasov today, exploring the things to do in the area. We visit Tampa Mountain and the Brasov Sign, Rasnov Fortress, the Brasov Walls, Brasov's Citadel on the Hill, and we share the Easter events in Brasov.

Currently the Romanian exchange rate is 4.6 Lei to $1.00 USD

Romania is not a member of the Schengen Agreement which makes it a great place for a non Schengen home base.

The Schengen Agreement has ruined the dream for millions around the world to slow travel through Europe. Gone are the days of crossing from Spain to France and resetting your clock in a neighboring country. If your country is not a member of Schengen you have to look at these 26 countries as one, an American can only spend 90 days out of 180 days between all 26 countries. Romania and a handful of European countries including the UK are options to live in to reset your Schengen clock. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander, or from South Africa a Non-Schengen country like Romania should be in consideration for your investment budget. Even if you’re not choosing residency in Romania, it’s a great place to live 90 out of 180 days if you need to leave the Schengen. There are some residency options available through a few Schengen countries, but most of these require €250,000-€1,000,000 invested in or paid to the country. Italy has some options that are vaguely written and subjective to local decisions that can be inconsistent.

INVITED to a VAMPIRES HOME | Bran Castle in ROMANIA

➺ I N T H I S E P I S O D E
Welcome to Dracula's Castle! This was on my bucket list for the longest time and we finally made it here!
The history of this castle is rather confusing than easy to understand but here is a try:
Bram Stoker, the author of the Dracula Novel, depict the imaginary Dracula's castle based upon a description of Bran Castle. And since there is no other castle in all of Transylvania that fits his description, Bran castle is now also called Dracula's castle. And then there is something about Vlad Tepes, a cruel prince in 15h century. Stoker named his character after him.
After visiting Dracula's home we made our way to another castle called Peles castles.

EP-7 Romania ????????| Dracula Castle full tour | Scenic bus journey to Bran Village | Indian in Romania

Bran Castle situated near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Brașov, is a national monument and landmark in Romania. The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, Commonly known as Dracula's Castle (although it is one among several locations linked to the Dracula legend, including Poenari Castle and Hunyadi Castle), it is often erroneously referred to as the home of the title character in Bram Stoker's Dracula. There is, however, no evidence that Stoker knew anything about this castle, which has only tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia, the putative inspiration for Dracula.

Bran castle or Dracula’s castle or vlad the I mpalers classless

Bran Castle (Romanian: Castelul Bran; German: Schloss Bran; Hungarian: Törcsvári kastély) is a castle in Bran, 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of Brașov. It is a national monument and landmark in Transylvania. The fortress is on the Transylvanian side of the historical border with Wallachia, on road DN73.

Commonly known outside Transylvania as Dracula's Castle, it is often referred to as the home of the title character in Bram Stoker's Dracula.[citation needed] There is no evidence that Stoker knew anything about this castle, which has only tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia, the putative inspiration for Dracula.[citation needed] Stoker's description of Dracula's crumbling fictional castle also bears no resemblance to Bran Castle.

The castle is now a museum dedicated to displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Marie.[1] Tourists can see the interior on their own or by a guided tour. At the bottom of the hill is a small open-air museum exhibiting traditional Romanian peasant structures (cottages, barns, water-driven machinery, etc.) from the Bran region.[2]

Dracula's Castle
Vlad the Impaler
Vlad III Dracula, better known as Vlad The Impaler, was ruler of Wallachia on and off from 1448 to 1476. Other than being colloquially known as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's titular character in the novel Dracula, Vlad III is known for committing brutal acts of war. In his reign he was under constant threat of attack from both Ottoman and Hungarian forces. During an infamous retreat from Ottoman forces, Vlad III had the bodies of his enemies and his citizens alike impaled on large spikes in the field surrounding his country. Not only did his fondness for impaling his victims earn him the nickname Vlad the Impaler, it also ensured his survival during the retreat, as the Ottoman forces returned home after seeing the grotesque scene Vlad III had prepared for them.[11]

Vlad the Impaler and Castle Bran
Though many myths have been connected to Vlad III in connection with the Dracula myth, most historians agree that Vlad III Dracula never set foot in Castle Bran. Castle Bran was neither a friendly place for Vlad III to visit, nor was it under his rule.

The castle was linked to Vlad III for various reasons. The castle had long been one linked to his imprisonment after he was captured by the Hungarians in 1462. It was believed that he was imprisoned in Castle Bran, but historians now conclude that Vlad III was actually imprisoned in a fortress in Budapest. It is said by historians that Castle Bran was chosen to be the colloquial location of Vlad III's imprisonment as it is a more haunting and dramatic looking structure than other castles of the region. Historians and scholars alike have concluded that Vlad III likely never set foot in the castle. However, as there is a lack of written historical accounts from the region at that time, the idea cannot be completely discredited.[11][4]

Connection to Bram Stoker's Dracula
During Stoker's research on the region of Transylvania, he came across the brutal accounts of the atrocities committed by Vlad III. It is said he directly used the name Dracula after reading on the subject, but that his inspiration for Dracula was not solely based upon the historical figure. It is said instead that it was largely due to American cinema that Vlad III is considered the primary source of inspiration for the character Count Dracula.[12] Despite there being a connection between Stoker and Vlad III, there is still no known direct connection between Stoker's fictional castle and Bran Castle.

The description of the castle in the novel Dracula does not match Bran Castle. The current connection between Castle Bran and the Dracula legend (in both the sense of Vlad III Dracula and Bram Stoker's novel) is tourism-driven.[11] In the 1970s the Communist Party of Romania was developing a closer relationship to the West. Romania decided to put a wider focus on marketing for tourism to the country and because of the location of Bran Castle, its dramatic architecture, and its supposed connection to Vlad III Dracula and his connection to Bram Stoker's Dracula, the Romanian government decided to market the castle as the real Dracula Castle.[citation needed]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism to the castle and the region as a whole has dropped dramatically. However, a vaccination site was set up at the castle themed around Dracula, but with imagery involving needles in-place of fangs.[13] On the one hand, this was set up to bring tourism levels back up, such as giving certificates stating that the vaccine was given at the castle, but on the other hand it forms part of encouraging Romanians to get vaccinated due to a survey by Globsec that almost half of the population are not intending on getting vaccinated.[14][15]
