Mt Wilhelm (4,509m), Papua New Guinea 2021

Video by: Patrick Pikacha
At 4,509m Mt Wilhelm is the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea, and one of the highest summits in Oceania. Although it is a none technical hike, because of the altitude, it should not be underestimated. It is advisable to climatize at base camp, even hike to the second lake before attempting the summit early the next day. The trek from Betty's Lodge begins at 2,600m with an overnight at base camp. Here's how I did the climb. On the first day, I did a day hike with my daughter, Rosie, and family friends from Betty's Lodge to base camp and the glacial lakes. We then returned the same day to the lodge. The next day, I went back to base camp with a guide, Bonny. The guide was arranged by the lodge. Bonny has summited more than 70 times, and is very experienced. Bonny is my recommendation for a guide. From base camp, Bonny and I trekked to the higher lake to visit campers pitched on a ridge above the lake. Returning we had a short sleep, and were up after 1 Am. After a quick breakfast, we started the hike at 2am. On the way, we met other hikers, who joined up with us, and kept up with Bonny's pace. By 6:30am we were cueing at the summit. On the summit, we were lucky to have clear and spectacular views of both the north coast and the Ramu Valley, and Madang, and the extensive plains of Papua to the south. The best time to hike, Mt Wilhelm may be the dryer and colder winter months, between June and September. The summit can get cold, occasionally it will snow. So be prepared for the cold. We were lucky to have clear weather, when normally it may be wet and miserable in January. And on the way back it become hot. The hike can take between 3 to 10 hours, even longer, depending on one’s level of fitness, and acclimatization to the altitude. If you decide to climb Mt Wilhelm, take your time, and just keep walking. I had a blast and met many new friends. Thank you Mt Wilhelm, Bonny, 'Izzy', the boys from Lae, and everyone on the trail who made the journey both fun and eventful. You all take care in 2021 now.
Disclaimer.
Some video footage in this short 'doco' is terrible, as this was taken on a cheap phone, when the GoPro died!

In this video, you'll see and see my adventures in Papua New Guinea which is my country #22 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. I had mixed feelings while travelling in Papua New Guinea. Despite my mixed feelings, I would definitely like to return to that country one day and explore the island or Rabaul and the autonomous region of Bougainville.

BACKPACKING PAPUA NEW GUINEA | Milne Bay | 8/12

Dzień 8 (ENGLISH BELOW)

Piętnasty festiwal tradycyjnych czółen i bębnów w Alotau nad Zatoką Milne dobiegł końca.

The fifthteen annual Canoe and Kundo Festival came to and end. All the constructions raised for the festival are going to be disassembled and sell to the autochtones.
Meanwhile, I decided to jump to the other side of the bay to Wagawaga. As a waiting room I used a platform which was built to the chiefs. Thanks to the to kindness of a security guy, I learned a bit more about PNG customs practised around Milne Bay. A degustation of a new introduced to PNG pre-mixed alcohol called Leonka, was a nice thread. I surprised the security guy telling him that I had already tried a home and illegally brewed alcohol called in slang 'steam'.
Finally the long awaited dinghy arrived. However, unexpectedly I got a ride from a brother of Forestry Minister of Papua New Guinea.

Congo: Jungle Fever | Deadliest Journeys

00:00 In South Kivu in Congo, the city of Shabunda is one of the most isolated in the country. Its access is so difficult that life is more expensive there than in any European city. Thus, the poorest families come to look for food there by bicycle or motorbike. These convicts of the road sometimes transport up to 250 kilos of goods for several days, without worrying about the dangers. Without ever giving up, these travelers are almost all considered heroes because he who does not travel does not know the value of men, according to the Congolese.
