World's greatest treasure: crystals and gemstones | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Despite being relatively unknown to the general public, gemstones like heliodor, spinel, purple jade, and paraiba tourmaline have stirred emotions ever since humans first laid eyes on them.

What is their origin?
What route have they taken before they are shown in glass cases at jewelers?
Who are the gem hunters who find them, by the way?

This movie takes us inside the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, the largest trade show and exhibition for precious stones in the world, to uncover the truth behind these riddles.

STAY OUT and STAY ALIVE

The mining legacy goes back to the early 1800's leaving us with more than 500,000 abandoned mine openings nationwide. These old mines and water-filled pits and quarries pose a multitude of hazards. The Bureau of Land Management-Utah, Utah Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program and Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program have cooperatively produced this video as an educational tool to show the dangers associated with abandoned mines.

The Opals of Australia documentary of Patrick Voillot

Shakespeare described the opal as the Queen of Gems.
This gemstone is fascinating. It contains all the colors of the rainbow within it, and since ancient times, it conveyed happiness to all those who wore it.

Since the end of the nineteenth century, new opal deposits were discovered in Australia. The beauty and quantity of the stones coming out Australia disrupted commerce for all other gems. Unscrupulous dealers used the success of fictional novels to inflate its worth, and have ultimately bestowed a curse on this magnificent stone… the trickery has worked to bring bad luck to the opal, and the price is collapsing.

This film transports you into this country-continent, and makes you participate in the discovery and history of these exceptional gems. The local Aboriginal term kupa-piti means white man’s hole, where the town of Coober Pedy is now built. This is a fascinating place, resembling a termitary, where actual mounds of white opals can be found. Men dig tirelessly throughout the region in search of the gem. They use dynamite and bulldozers to reach the veins but the means to locate them is very subjective, some use radiesthesie or the historic experience of others.

This part of Australia, was once covered by a sea, and has withdrawn today, leaving significant fossil-rich sediments. During its formation, the opal was deposited into the skeletons of prehistoric animals. A fully aquatic dinosaur opal was found in the south. You will understand through animation how this formed a natural curiosity. You will also go to the West to discover the black opals in Lightning Ridge.

The Opal is an extremely fragile hydrated mineral. Only the most highly trained experts know how to carve it.
The Jewelers of Dior used the black opals of Lightning Ridge, the rarest, to achieve one of the creations of Victoire de Castellane.

Finally Finding SELDOM SEEN SLIM | Reaching the End of the Rainbow | Ballarat, CA

The journey to seek out Seldom Seen Slim concludes in Ballarat, California. Here we find the final resting place of Slim and examine where he spent his remaining years. Our whole journey from old mining ghost towns through Death Valley led here.

Seldom Seen Slim, born Charles Ferge, was a prospector known throughout the American Southwest. Often seen as the original desert rat, Slim moved from mining town to mining town across Nevada and California. He felt at home in the desert landscapes and enjoyed the quiet and solitude that it offered.

This simple man who felt at peace with enough meager belongings to get by in his prospecting activity ended up in Ballarat later in life and became somewhat of a local celebrity. Despite the name Seldom Seen, Slim was said to be quite welcoming of company and enjoyed sharing information and history about the area.

Slim's lifestyle and carefree attitude made him a bit of an archetype of the prospector of the Old West. His likeness is seen throughout the region as an older man with a mule.

La Rinconada, Peru... the worlds highest village.

One of the must see' places for me was the town of La Riconada in Peru. At 16, 700', it has a reputation as a rough gold mining town and definitely not part of the tourist trail. I had to go see for myself. Even though it has some major environmental problems, I found the people extremely friendly, hospital and hear warming. I loved the place!!!

A World Without Water (Global Environmental Documentary)| TRACKS

This film investigates the future of the world's water, and paints a disturbing picture of a world running out of the most basic of life's essentials.

8-year-old Vanessa and her parents have to walk almost a mile down the cliffs of El Alto in Bolivia to collect water from an unreliable well every day. Yet, they live just a few hundred metres from their city's main water treatment plant and can see millions of gallons just beyond the barbed wire fence. They are victims of waters increasing commodification.

The struggle for this precious resource and the battle for its ownership is explored through compelling stories of families living in Bolivia, Detroit, Dar Es Salaam and Rajestan. As the background to these stories we explore the conflicts over the future of water and see how even those living in the relatively water-rich UK hold the survival of the planet in our hands.

ALONE in the World’s DARKEST place (Black Rock Desert)

I ventured out solo to one of the darkest places on Planet Earth, Massacre Rim in the Black Rock Desert of Northern Nevada. It's one of just 17 dark sky sanctuaries in the world, with the potential of seeing the Milky Way in all its glory. But it wasn't without its mishaps and adventures getting there. This is the story.

Discovering Hidden Gems in the MOJAVE DESERT | Desert Dreaming - A Road Trip Adventure

We're setting off deep into the Mojave Desert to see what we can find - Joshua trees, old mines, incredible bridges, scenic landscapes, and more. Join us on our behind-the-scenes road trip as we venture into Nevada and California.

Starting off in a forest of Joshua trees, we take in the landscape filled with hundreds if not thousands of these amazing trees. But soon it is time to set off for our lodging for our 3-day stay - the Sands Motel in Boulder City, Nevada. This charming mid-century motel gets a thumb of approval from us amidst a lot of historic old motels and restaurants.

The next morning we set off for our first destination but not before fueling up with coffee and taking a short stop at the Mike O'Callaghan and Pat Tillman Bridge which overlooks the Colorado River and the Hoover Dam spanning across the Arizona-Nevada state line.

With our first destination wrapped up and filmed, we set off and shortly discover so interesting mine shafts in the side of the mountainous landscape. A short exploration tells us that we need to research more about this old mine and maybe come back.

Guided by the advice of a kind gentleman we then head for a scenic recreation area next to the Colorado River where the water runs deep blue and green and the Earth rises in craggy peaks. NOT to be missed.

A rainstorm leads us to our accommodations where we rest for the remainder of our Mojave trip.
