Emmy Eats TUNISIA – tasting Tunisian treats

Trying TUNISIAN food! Tunis local food and STREET FOOD tour! الغذاء التونسي

We spent two days in Tunisia's capital of Tunis eating amazing Tunisian food and meeting super friendly locals - some let us sample their food, some gave us free makroudhs (Tunisian pastries) and some shared a giant feast with us while teaching us about Tunisian culture! As you can probably tell, the hospitality is truly amazing in Tunisia, and I am so thankful to everyone who made us feel so welcome in Tunisia!

Now, onto the food - we started our day off at a small, hole-in-the wall restaurant where a very cheerful man served us two classics: lablabi and ojja. Lablabi is a hearty chickpea stew made with harrisa (a spicy chili paste), pieces of bread, tuna and olives. A hearty and delicious start to the tour! The ojja (chicken and vegetables fried together with a lot of harissa and olive oil) may very well have been our favorite dish of this whole tour! Mopping up that caramelized chicken sitting in a pool of spicy harrisa and olive oil was just too good to be true.

After trying some awesome Tunisian tea following our first meal, we made our way to what seemed to be a pretty popular restaurant - El Baraka! Here, we tried an eggplant mix with lots of olive oil and tomatoes which we scooped up with more bread, as well as their signature grilled fish which was super smoky, with crispy skin and extremely tender and juicy meat!

On our way back to our accommodation we tried some Tunisian sweets called makroudh. They were amazing! We were also given these for free by the owners of the stand making them, we are so thankful! The Tunisian hospitality shines through here, once again!

Finally, the next day we meet up with two locals - Yassine and Yassine. Together we enjoy a giant Tunisian feast at the legendary Dar El Jeld, a restaurant a bit fancier than what we're usually used to! The interior was made in traditional Tunisian style and was stunningly beautiful. We tried a lot of food, ranging from fluffy cous cous (Tunisia's national dish), unbelievably tender lamb and stuffed phylo pastries (brik)! Everything was amazing, and on top of that, we were able to learn a lot about Tunisian culture thanks to our new friends, with whom we had a great time!

Trying to make TUNISIAN MAKROUDH pastry - RECIPE! | أجنبي يجرب الطبخ التونسي

In this video I attempt to make one of my favourite treats from our trip in Tunisia last year - makroudh! Here is the full recipe:

Ingredients:

Dough:
350 g semolina
35 g plain white flour
160 g melted butter
Pinch of salt
150 g orange blossom water

Date filling:
400 g medjool dates
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 tablespoon orange blossom water
1/2 teaspon cinnamon

Honey coating:
300 g honey
1 tbsp orange flower water

Frying oil

Instructions:
1. Mix all the ingredients for the dough, except for the orange blossom water. Don't knead it, just mix it until it is thoroughly mixed.
2. Let the dough rest for 45 min - 1 hour while you make the date paste.
3. Steam the dates for around 30 minutes or until soft. Blend or chop together with butter, orange blossom water and cinnamon until a smooth paste is formed.
4. Add the orange blossom water to the dough and pinch with your fingers until smooth and homogeneous.
5. Divide the dough into two equal pieces. Roll each piece into a thin, rectangular log about 1 cm thick.
6. Make a well down the middle of each log and fill with the date paste.
7. Pinch the sides of the logs together, enclosing the date paste inside the dough.
8. Roll the dough and flatten it again just to ensure it is properly sealed.
9. Score the dough to make a pattern using the blunt side of a knife.
10. Cut the logs into individual makroudhs, each about 3-5 cm in width.
11. Prepare the honey coating by heating the honey and orange blossom water and then keeping it warm on the stove.
11. Fry the makroudhs in a pot filled with a deep layer of oil for about 3-5 minutes or until golden brown.
12. Transfer to the honey coating and then the makroudhs are complete!

Enjoy with Tunisian green tea!

BAKING BAKLAVA from TUNISIA (Sharing my Tunisia Travel Stories and Tips) #cookwithme

Today is International Night where I make a dish from abroad and pair it with a film from that country to get into the spirit of travel. This episode we are celebrating Tunisia, the small but mighty country in North Africa. In celebration of Tunisia, I am making baklava rolls (also known as saragli), watching Empire of Dreams, and sharing Tunisia travel stories and tips.

Tunisian baklava is a delicious pastry desert made of filo dough, nuts, and honey. Tunisia is famous for being one of the main filming locations for Star Wars, so I'm pairing the dish with the documentary film Empire of Dreams - The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy.

Enjoy this trip to Tunisia from home and #stayhome #cookwithme!

Traveling to ISLAMIC HOLY CITY! Trying STREET FOOD in Kairouan, Tunisia! السفر إلى القيروان

After a couple of days in Tunis, we headed a little bit further south to the UNESCO Heritage town of Kairouan. Kairouan was founded in 670 and is considered by many to be the 4th holiest city of Islam, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

We spent two days exploring and eating in Kairouan, and while there wasn't a great abundance of food to try, this was compensated for by the food we did have being amazing, and the sites of Kairouan being truly spectacular!

This video also marks the end of our Tunisia series. Thank you to all the Tunisian people we met, the hospitalty and warmth we were greeted with made this trip truly special!

so I got invited to taste some chocolate samples at a local chocolatier. after tasting some samples, I promised them to be back soon! its strange to eat chocolates first then do a dinner feast, but the food that was infront of me and Slim, is a sight to behold, so we ate and gobbled, and chewed, and swallowed Tunisian food through 2 hours!
