Our visit Edinburgh travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and the city by day. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Edinburgh tourism brochure or Edinburgh, Scotland city tour.

20 Things to do in Edinburgh, Scotland Top Attractions Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Our week in Edinburgh was action packed! We sampled gin and Scotch whisky, wandered down tiny closes, braved the crowds along the Royal Mile, ate our fill of haggis, and even visited a castle, a palace, and an abbey. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Edinburgh on your visit, this video guide will show you all of those attractions and then some!

Edinburgh Castle is hard to miss as it dominates the city’s skyline. The first thing you should know about the Castle is that it’s not just one single building, so once you’re inside there’s quite a bit to see and do; you can tour the Royal Palace, see the Crown Jewels, watch the firing of the one o’clock gun, step inside St. Margaret’s Chapel, visit the National War Museum and so much more, so give yourself plenty of time.

We also made time to visit the famed Royal Mile, which is the busiest street in Edinburgh’s Old Town. There’s quite a bit to see along here, so we first popped into the Royal Mile Market, which is set inside a former church, and from there we continued down the street, visiting little souvenir shops along the way. You’ll have no trouble finding a kilt here!

Another activity we really enjoyed was taking a food tour with Eat Walk Edinburgh. We got to try a lot of delicious bites and beverages along the way, and one of the highlights was visiting the Fugde House.

Another fun way to explore Edinburgh on foot is by wandering down the tiny closes. These small alleys were often named after a memorable occupant, and the Old Town is full of them.

And that’s it for our visit to Edinburgh, Scotland. We hope you enjoyed following our travels and that this video gave you a few ideas of things to do, foods to try, and places to visit around the city. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do in Edinburgh, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments section below. Until next time!

This is part of our Travel in Scotland video series showcasing Scottish food, Scottish culture and Scottish cuisine.

Edinburgh Travel Guide

Are you planning to visit Edinburgh, Scotland soon? You’re in for a rewarding and refreshing vacation. That's why people from all over the world do travel to see the home of art and literature filled with historical sites and monuments. Edinburgh is home to many Scottish national treasures such as museums, castles, mountains, and statues. Each day you spend touring this city will be filled with breathtaking views your eyes aren’t capable of exhausting. Some of the finest restaurants you hardly can find elsewhere are among the places you would eat if you can afford them.
As lovely and appealing as the city is, please don’t conclude your plans or make any serious commitment before you digest this Edinburgh Travel Guide. Even if you have once visited and are planning to visit again, your trip to Edinburgh won’t be the same experience after what you’re going to see here. The capital city of Scotland is filled with quirky, alluring, nooks tempting any tourist to keep exploring. The city known for its art and literature actually begs to be discovered. Come along with us in this guide to explore rare gems dotting this modern Athens of the North.
Why You Should Visit Edinburgh
The uncommon and memorable charm of this city known as Auld Reekie is drawing visitors from around the world. From its dark corners to majestic buildings and gardens. There are countless fascinating museums in this historic city. In Scots, “Auld Reekie” means “Old Smokey.” This fitting alias reminds us of Edinburgh’s pasts when smog created by all the smoke and chimneys the city used to fill the city in those days. Its weather, which can produce a lot of rain and wind, though an inconvenience, gives it extra allure with some mysterious and somber atmosphere.
One important reason to visit Edinburgh is the city’s history. You can learn a great deal of fascinating Scottish history in the city—history predating the Roman civilization. Edinburgh was a theater of war that preserved the memories of forts, weapons, and armies. A lot to learn about this is reposed in the Castle Rock, including its role in the War of Scottish Independence. You can also learn about historical figures whose big strides have marked the pages of history. Their portraits can be found in galleries and museums in this city.
Another reason to visit Edinburgh is the awesome nightlife and festivals. Though a medieval and historic city, its cool underground bars, pubs, clubs, and whisky bars are traditional yet sophisticated. This is such an important complement for a university city. You need to visit Edinburgh also to see its incredible architecture. This is a city with some world-class architecture. Styles that make up Edinburgh are down there on the streets of the oldest part of Edinburgh Castles. Together with different monuments in this city is the beautiful Georgian architecture.

Edinburgh (Scotland) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Edinburgh in Scotland.
In the centre of the old town, Edinburgh Castle sits atop the basalt cone of a long-extinct volcano. It is the most visited castle in Scotland and still guarded by soldiers but it is now mainly tourists who storm the defiant rock. Northumbrian king, Edwin, commanded the castle to be built in the seventh century A.D., the castle on the hill, Edinburgh. The Royal Mile leads from the mighty fortress, downwards, a sloping road from which narrow streets branch off. Just off the upper Royal Mile is the church and cemetery of Greyfriars with its many historical and atmospheric tombs. Its cemetery became well known due to two Irishmen who exhumed newly-buried corpses in 1827 in order to sell them to the local anatomical institute. The Royal Mile eventually narrows and ends at the Palace Of Holyrood House, official Scottish residence of the British Queen. The East Princes Street Gardens are the city’s green paradise with large trees, well-manicured lawns and the massive Sir Walter Scott Monument. This city of poets and culture is one of the oldest urban regions in Europe... and home of the Scottish nation.

Edinburgh Vacation Travel Guide

Edinburgh Vacation Travel Guide

The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Its Old Town and Royal Mile are filled with the ghosts of medieval merchants, body snatchers, and poets, while its Georgian-styled New Town shines with the glories of the Scottish Enlightenment.

To see Edinburgh in all her glory, climb to Arthur’s Seat, the highest of the city’s seven peaks. Some historians believe this was the site of King Arthur’s legendary castle Camelot.

Nearby, on another volcanic crag, rises Edinburgh Castle, the very symbol of Scotland itself. Over the last eleven centuries, this castle has been laid siege to 26 times but still it stands, a testimony to the indomitable spirit of the Scots.

Edinburgh has long held a special place in the hearts of the monarchy. Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia sailed over one million miles before being permanently moored at Ocean Terminal as a symbol of the Royal Family’s affection for the people of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has been the jewel in the crown of royals for centuries and its old-world chivalry continues today. Thistle Chapel, in St Giles’ Cathedral, honors the Knights and Ladies of Scotland’s oldest order.

In Princes Street Gardens, rises the world’s largest monument to a writer, dedicated to Sir Walter Scott. At the Writers Museum, learn about more of Scotland’s cherished literary adventurers. Edinburgh casts her spell over contemporary writers too, JK Rowling wrote two of her Harry Potter series in cozy Old Town nooks, such as the Elephant House Café.

For centuries, the University of Edinburgh has given us intellectual giants such as Charles Darwin, David Hume and Alexander Bell. Explore centuries of innovation at the Scottish Museum, or head to South Queensferry to see the Forth Bridge, an engineering marvel when it opened in 1890.

The Royal Botanic Gardens is one of the world’s oldest and most important centers of botanical science, yet it’s still a place which invites one to slow down.

Edinburgh is a city that has given the world countless gifts, but perhaps her greatest is showing that all parts of the human experience - the sciences and the arts, the past and the present, the sacred and the light-hearted - all have equal value.

Edinburgh is Scotland's compact, hilly capital. It has a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. Arthur’s Seat is an imposing peak in Holyrood Park with sweeping views, and Calton Hill is topped with monuments and memorials

Some Facts about Edinburgh, Scotland:

1. THE EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL IS THE LARGEST ARTS FESTIVAL IN THE WORLD
The population of Edinburgh doubles in size during Fringe with people travelling from far and wide just to experience it. This festival should be on everyone’s bucket list, this year it kicks off on 3 August. Altogether, Edinburgh's Festivals generate over £260m for the Scottish economy and create the equivalent of 5,242 full-time jobs each year.

2. THE HARRY POTTER MOVIES WERE FILMED IN EDINBURGH
Much of J K Rowling’s inspiration for the Harry Potter books derived from Edinburgh. In fact, she wrote the majority of Harry Potter books while living in the city and you can visit some of the coffee shops and hotels such as Elephant House and Balmoral Hotel where she spent time writing the novels. You can visit the film locations including GreyFriars Kirkyard and Victoria Street, or take the Potter Trail, a tour that takes you through the relevant sites

3. THE WORLD’S ONE AND ONLY KNIGHTED PENGUIN LIVES AT EDINBURGH ZOO
And his name is Sir Nils Olav. The King penguin’s role includes inspecting the Norwegian Guard on their visits to the Scottish capital and since his knighthood in 2008, he’s since been promoted in the ranks to Brigadier. Only in Edinburgh!

4. IT’S THE GREENEST CITY IN THE UK
Edinburgh has more trees per head of population than any other city in the UK. The capital is also home to 112 parks, the lungs of the city.

5. EDINBURGH CASTLE SITS ON AN EXTINCT VOLCANO
Edinburgh Castle sits on Castle Rock, a 700 million-year-old extinct volcano. Make sure you're here at 1pm to see the 'One O'Clock Gun' fires be shot from the castle. This takes place every day in the capital (except Sundays) where spectators gather in the park to watch.
