Where to eat in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

This is the final video in our 3-part Rarotonga vlog series! It's safe to say that food in Rarotonga really exceeded our expectations. The fish was so fresh it felt like it was caught only a few hours before it reached our plates. Check out this episode to find out all the great local spots that we managed to hit up during our time in the Cook Islands.

We're sure there were a bunch of other fantastic spots that we missed out on, but guess that means we'll just need to make another trip back to Raro one day :) If you're from Rarotonga or you've been there before, let us know where else we should try next time we visit the Cook Islands.

Here's a list of all the places we managed to cover in this Rarotonga food vlog though:

1. Charlies Cafe and Beach Hire - Awesome lil spot. You can either get a mean feed or rent a kayak and snorkel to venture out into the beach which is right next door. Their sandwiches are huge!
Address: Ara Tapu, Takitumu District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 11am–9pm

2. Trader Jacks - Just the thought of this place still brings smiles to our faces. The crayfish tail we had was so good we came here a second time and ordered the same dish. Peter also got the ika mata here (not shown in the video unfortunately) but believe us, it was amazing!
Address: Ara Tapu, Avarua District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Thursday 11am - 11pm
Friday 11am–3am
Saturday 11am–12am

3. The Waterline Restaurant and Beach Bar - One of the most beautifully located restaurants we went to during our stay in Rarotonga. Right next to the beach and in a charming wooden beach hutt. Also houses the best pina colada Peter has ever had.
Address: Arorangi, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Lunch - Tuesday - Friday 11:30am - 2pm
Dinner - Tuesday - Sunday from 6pm till late

4. The Mooring Fish Cafe - We heard from our Cook Island friends that this is where locals from Rarotonga go to get a great lunch.
Address: Avana Fishing Club near Ngatangiia District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 10:30am–3:30pm

5. Bite Time Cafe - This place surprised us with the quality of the ika mata and tuna. We ended up eating here after the Raemaru trek which you can see the whole video in:

Address: Avarua District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 8:30am–9pm

We hope you've enjoyed this Rarotonga series of ours! Be sure to watch our other 2 videos we made about Raro if you haven't seen them yet :)

Arriving in Rarotonga, Cook Islands and eating with locals

Kia Orana! Get your sunnies and jandals ready coz it's time for a dose of relaxation and paradise in Rarotonga!

On this first of a three-part series let us show you what you need to do to get going once you arrive in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Raro is a short 4 hour flight from Auckland, New Zealand. In this episode we show you how much things cost, where to stay and then take you along on a progressive meal where we eat with local Cook Island families at their homes.

First things first we stop off and get our sims from Bluesky. Pretty much the only local phone operator to get your mobile data or wifi from. You can check out their full rates on:
just be warned that data isn't very cheap and the connection isn't the best on Raro but it works mostly fine enough.

Once you've ticked off mobile connectivity it's time to sort out transport. Scooters are the most popular option for getting around in Rarotonga but due to the fact we had 5 people and the chance of rain for most our trip was very high, we decided to hire a 7 seater vehicle instead.

We found Island Car and Bike Hire to have the cheapest rentals however the trade off is the vehicles aren't the newest which suited us just fine.

Supplies! Before we head over to our resort we need to get stocked up. Rarotonga only has two big grocery stores on the island. We headed to the one closest to our resort called Wigmore's Superstore which is on the Muri beach side.

Together with our group of friends we stayed at the Pacific Resort. Located right on Muri beach we enjoyed many piña coladas and bowls of ika mata (a raw fish dish) from this great and convenient accommodation.

We've saved the best for last though. This was one of our favourite activities during our stay. Dining with some Rarotongan locals and their families on a progressive meal. This involved getting picked up at our resort, going in a shuffle with a bunch of strangers then getting taken to three different Rarotonga family homes for delicious home cooked Cook Island food. The first home serves the entrée, second home the mains and the last home, dessert. Amazing way to experience Rarotonga's culture and food. We were able to meet so many great people and really familiarise ourselves with Cook Island food. You can check out the experience yourselves at Cook Island Tours.

We'd like to give a big shout out to our awesome friends Is That Us Fam for our gifts that we wore during the progressive meal with Cook Island Tours! You can watch their video where they surprised us with those gifts in their video here:

COOK ISLANDS FOOD | Where do locals eat in Rarotonga, Cook Islands?

What tourists eat in Cook Islands is quite different than what the locals eat. So, what is the most popular Cook Islands food that people eat in Rarotonga Cook Islands?

Surprisingly, there are some laid back and cheap places to eat in Cook Islands, and I visited a few of them.

These take-away places are scattered everywhere throughout the island. In Rarotonga, I visited the popular Sea Salt Takeaway and Rarotonga Chicken, which are two of the most popular places to eat on the island.

WARNING: Beware of the actual LIVE chickens while eating in some Cook Islands restaurants. They will try to steal your food, and one hen managed to do just that and have a peck of my lunch.

Basically, Cook Islanders are like the rest of us - and when they go out to eat, they like fast food too.

But if you want to check out some of the traditional foods of Cook Islands, there's lots of places to do that. To learn more, check out our handy guide: Cook Islands Food – Design a Do It Yourself Polynesian Food Tour at:

In this special episode we head to a tropical PARADISE in the Pacific known as Rarotonga, in the Cook Islands. Here we explore the underwater treasures the island holds scuba diving reefs and wrecks. We surprise my brother and his wife hijacking their honeymoon with their daughter and our parents.

Disaster strikes whilst Kayaking on the reef. I recover well enough to undertake a cross island hike over mountainous rainforest. We learn the Polynesian history and culture of the island with some spectacular performances at a local Marae. So much adventure and beauty in one package on this episode!

Have You Heard Of This Paradise? Arriving in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Welcome to the Cook Islands! Today we take a flight to Rarotonga with Jetstar, arrive at the most chill airport ever and head to our hotel resort on Muri Beach, Pacific Resort Rarotonga. It is definitely...⬇ More Below ✈ Everything you need to know about making money online is in our 220 page guide —

Rarotonga is the most chilled place we've ever been. Full stop. Rarotonga is the largest island of the Cook Islands and where we'll be spending the next week exploring!

First step was jumping on our Jetstar flight to Rarotonga from Auckland, arriving at the airport it was clear how special this trip was going to be. The people of Rarotonga are so friendly, warm, personable and welcoming — even so late in the evening!

Special thanks to Jetstar for helping us get to Rarotonga and show off this beautiful place!

Theres lots of Rarotonga hotels and resorts, but we knew Muri beach was a spot we wanted to be close to. Then we found Pacific Resort Rarotonga and instantly knew it would be a winner! Our flight arrived while it was already dark though, so we weren't initially able to see how beautiful the hotel resort setup was until the next day... as you would have seen, we were pretty bloody happy with it!

Pacific Resort Rarotonga was kind enough to allow us to film their resort and take us out on a lagoon tour while hosting us, if you're looking at a trip to Rarotonga definitely check it out, it's the perfect spot on Muri Beach —

Survivor Cook Islands, may have exposed these beautiful islands to you, so if you are researching this place a holiday destination these travel videos will give you a good insight as to what you can get up to.

There are quite a few restaurants in Raro with some of them being right on the beach. It is the perfect way to end a busy or relaxing day as you watch the sun set in to the Pacific ocean with a glass of wine or beer in hand and a superb meal right on the waters edge. One of my favourites was the Beaches Restaurant at Manuia Beach Resort. The outlook, restaurant and location were magnificent and the restaurant is based right on the beach in the sand. This is a true tropical island dining experience.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and we'll get back to you with an answer as soon as we can.

I hope you enjoy our videos from our television series INTO WATER & BEYOND.
