Easter Island, a small volcanic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is world-famous for its giant ‘moai’ statues, which were built during the 13th – 16th centuries by the island’s inhabitants, the Rapa Nui people, in honor of their ancestors.
The moai stood on stone platforms called ahus. All of the moai on the platforms were toppled by the Rapa Nui in the 1830s due to tribal wars and a loss of faith in their ancestors. During the late 1900s, moai at several sites were restored to their original platforms by locals and archaeologists. The best places to visit on the remote and mysterious Easter Island. Located in the Pacific Ocean, and part of Chile, this island has many activities to offer. Many questions have been raised around the mystery of the Moai (statues/heads). This video features the great places to visit and tips on things to do on this amazingly friendly Pacific island!
1. Sun rise at Ahu Tongariki: Get up very early to drive or bike from the capital Hanga Roa to the Ahu Tongariki site for a sensational sun rise, like you have never seen before!

2. Rano Raraku: Continue the journey and visit Rano Raraku, the Moai factory. This is the place where the Moai are supposed to be created and it is still under debate how they will have been transferred to the many sites along the island where they have been found.

Easter Island is a small volcanic island off the coast of Chile in Polynesia. Rapa Nui is the indigenous name for the island. It's famous for its archaeological sites, which include about 900 massive statues known as moai, which were built by people between the 13th and 16th centuries. The moai are carved human figures with excessively enormous heads that are typically placed atop ahus, which are massive stone pedestals. Ahu Tongariki has the largest concentration of upright moai.
Rapa Nui was the island's native name, but Dutch explorers renamed it Paaseiland, or Easter Island, in honour of the day they arrived in 1722. It was annexed by Chile in the late 1800s, and its economy is mostly focused on tourism.
