The Comoros - East Africa's Island Paradise

I spent ten days exploring the Comoros islands in East Africa (next to Madagascar), splitting my time between Grande Comore and Mohéli. On Grande Comore I visited Moroni, the beaches of the north, Lac Salé, and Chindini.

On Moheli I stayed at Laka Lodge in Nioumachoua, where I swam, snorkled with humpback whales and turtles, and enjoyed Moheli's perfect beaches. A true paradise!

Exploring Africa's Strangest Country (Djibouti)

Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country in the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year.

Over the last 2 days, I have explored every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa.

Here are some of my quick realizations:

- It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105).

- Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (second) and English (third, if any at all).

- There is a LOT OF SECURITY everywhere -- police/military guards standing on every corner (literally) with giant guns strapped to their backs. It is kind of crazy and very intimidating, but safe.

- About a quarter of Djibouti's population (~250,000 people) are living in extreme poverty, which is more extreme than you'd think given that this country is so expensive. A massive contrast between rich & poor.

All of my thoughts on this mysterious country, and more, are in this video. Have you ever been to Djibouti?

What is COMOROS?!

I have made it safely to my 142nd country — the lovely African-island nation of COMOROS!

Nothing gets me more excited than visiting places like Comoros, which are completely hidden and overlooked by the world.

Truth be told, Comoros is booming with life and it has such a unique culture!!

Two Facebook friends, Hamza & Armel, picked me up at the Comoros main airport yesterday morning and have been driving me all over to visit the best places on the island. The people here in Comoros are so kind and welcoming, despite not speaking much English (everyone knows French as it was a French colony).

In this video, I have done my best to educate you a little bit about what life is like in Comoros. I hope you enjoy, and please, comment with any questions/thoughts/comments you may have!

Have you ever been to Comoros?

BONZOUR from the beautiful African island nation of MAURITIUS!

(I didn't misspell 'Bonzour,' it means 'Hello' in their language of Creole, which is very similar to French) ;)

If you are like I was a few days ago, then you don't know much about this hidden country of Mauritius, which lies off the southeastern coast of Africa.

But after getting in touch with some locals from Mauritius who have kindly introduced me to their culture and showed me around the island -- I have put together this video which highlights the most interesting things I've learned about Mauritius so far.

Have you ever been to Mauritius or know anything about Mauritian culture? What is your favorite part about the country?

The Comoros. Everyday life in a small village. Traditional comorean beauty mask and marriage dress.

#Comores #TravelDocumentary

After long walk all over the vanilla and ylang ylang plantation we came to the small village Paje to learn about simple everyday life in the Comoros islands. We helped Maketses brother to replace a roof with some palm leaves. Tali tried traditional sandalwood beauty mask, which helps to protect the skin from the sun in East Africa. We visited a very famous tailor to dress up with a traditional marriage dress.

The Comoros Islands - The Union of the Comoros

The Comoros officially the Union of the Comoros (Comorian: Udzima wa Komori, French: Union des Comores, Arabic: الاتحاد القمري‎ al-Ittiḥād al-Qumurī/Qamarī) is an archipelago island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa, on the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. Other countries near to the Comoros are Tanzania to the northwest and the Seychelles to the northeast. The capital is Moroni on Grande Comore.

At 1,862 km2 (719 sq mi) (excluding Mayotte),[3] the Comoros is the third-smallest African nation by area. With a population estimated at 798,000 (excluding Mayotte), it is the sixth-smallest African nation by population—although it has one of the highest population densities in Africa. Its name derives from the Arabic word القمر qamar (moon).[4] The archipelago is notable for its diverse culture and history, as a nation formed at the crossroads of many civilizations. Though in the contested island of Mayotte the sole official language is French, the Union of the Comoros has three official languages: Comorian (Shikomor), Arabic and French.
Moroni with Harbor Bay and Central Mosque, Capital of the Comoros

The country officially consists of the four islands in the volcanic Comoros archipelago: northwestermost Grande Comore or Ngazidja, Mohéli or Mwali, Anjouan or Nzwani, and southeastermost Mayotte or Maore, as well as many smaller islands. However, the government of the Union of the Comoros (or its predecessors, since independence) has never administered the island of Mayotte, which France administers as an overseas collectivity. Mayotte was the only island in the archipelago that voted against independence from France in 1974; the latter has vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions that would affirm Comorian sovereignty over the island.[5][6][7][8] In addition, a 29 March 2009 referendum on Mayotte's becoming an overseas department of France in 2011 was passed overwhelmingly by the people of Mayotte.

The Union of the Comoros is the only state to be a member of all of the following: African Union, Francophonie, Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Arab League and Indian Ocean Commission. The country has had a history marked by numerous coups d'état since independence in 1975. As of 2008 about half the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.[9]

MAURITIUS vs. SEYCHELLES vs. COMOROS

Over the last 3 months, I've had the pleasure to visit all 3 of Africa's small island countries in the Indian Ocean. Mauritius, Seychelles and Comoros.

While the three often get mixed together for their stunning natural landscapes and white-sanded beaches, the culture and lifestyle of the 3 nations are very different. This video will explain more about Mauritius v Seychelles v Comoros!

Have you ever been to either Mauritius, Seychelles or Comoros? Do you agree/disagree with me? Comment below!

10 Reasons To Visit Mauritius in 2021

10 Reasons To Visit Mauritius in 2021.
One of the most beautiful island getaways anywhere in the WORLD is located right here in AFRICA!

This tiny island paradise just east of Madagascar, off the eastern coast of Africa, is one of the most beautiful places on EARTH!

Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is home to only around 1 million people, despite being TWICE the size of Hong Kong. However this island paradise features beautiful weather year round, and plenty for everyone.

Mauritius more than doubles it’s population with tourists who visit each year, as in 2018 when it hosted over 1.4 million visitors, including yours truly.

Most tourists arrive by airplane, however some do arrive by boat. Mauritius is a very popular destination for many from other African countries looking for a getaway without going too far from home.

Hey, 1.4 million people a year cannot be wrong!

So let’s jump into our list of the ten reasons we think you should visit Mauritius!

10. Food

If you love food, you will love your time in Mauritius, trust me!

Mauritian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world, with influences from French, Indian, African and Asian kitchens coming together to create its unique flavours. Be sure to scan restaurant menus for daube, fish vindaye, chicken or fish kalia (mixed with vegetables), mutton halim (a soup), a classic tomato-based chicken stew and a local take on Indian vindaloo.

You can also try Mauritian snacks such as dhal puri, a traditional flatbread filled with spicy ground split peas and served with chutney. Or try the island’s famous babonne, a fleshy white fish similar to red snapper.

9. Festivals

If you want to experience what’s said to be the largest Hindu pilgrimage outside India, plan a visit during Maha Shivaratri.

Each February, around 500,000 people make the pilgrimage on foot to Grand Bassin, a lake near which stands a giant statue of Lord Shiva.

You can also visit during Diwali, the festival of light, held every Spring, and feast on gâteau patate – sweet potato and coconut cakes made and offered as gifts between families and neighbours.

Other festivals such as Thaipusam, Ganesh Chathurthi, Ugadi and Chinese New Year are also widely celebrated and each of them gives a glimpse into the many cultures that come together to create the island of Mauritius.

8. Markets

Featuring fruit and vegetable vendors, artisans selling handicrafts, spice vendors and street-food hawkers, the markets all over the island offer a cheerful slice of Mauritian life.

LAST DAY IN THE COMOROS - VLOG #23

Our last day in The Comoros in southern Africa, we just took the drone for a flight but had to land quickly as it got overheated. Then we collected some volcanic rocks and I got food poisoning on the way home. Not the best way to finish but man, it was a good trip!

Thanks to IKEA Foundation and UNICEF for taking care of us and doing a great job for those in need!
