Trip Ashore to Explore Mayan Ruins! | S02E14

After spending a couple of months heads down in sewing and fiberglass work, we both decided it was time to take a break from the darker side of cruising to remind ourselves about the rewards of working our butts off in a new country!

So we took a long weekend break from our work in Isla Mujeres, MX to explore Merida, the cultural center of the Yucatan! Jordan nearly exploded when we got to the mayan ruins of Uxmal- he’s ridiculously obsessed with research, not only about boats, but also about history and any kind of ancient human civilization.

Most people get through Uxmal in a couple of hours, but we spent the WHOLE day there.

Tikal Mayan Ruins Virtual Tour | VR 360° Travel Experience | Guatamala

Explore the ruins of Tikal in Guatemala!

Tikal (/tiˈkɑːl/) (Tik’al in modern Mayan orthography) is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Situated in the department of El Petén, the site is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BC, Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, c. 200 to 900 AD. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily, while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica such as the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant Valley of Mexico. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century CE. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site's abandonment by the end of the 10th century.

Tikal is the best understood of any of the large lowland Maya cities, with a long dynastic ruler list, the discovery of the tombs of many of the rulers on this list and the investigation of their monuments, temples and palaces.

Visiting Tikal Guatemala | How to Explore Ancient Mayan Ruins

The ancient Mayan ruins in Tikal Guatemala may be the most impressive of the lot. With ruins towering over the jungle top dominated by tons of howler monkeys, visiting Tikal Guatemala is a must. To explore these ancient Mayan ruins, you should stay in Flores, a small island town that is about 40 minute drive from Tikal. I'd personally recommend getting a guide if you go as the extra cost of only $10 USD makes a big difference in what you learn.

The Incredible Mayan Ruins of Tikal, Guatemala

Exploring TIKAL, The Most Impressive Mayan Ruins In Guatemala

The EPIC view of Tikal really took our breath away. We spent the day exploring the most beautiful Maya ruins in Guatemala. Tikal National Park is home to over 60.000 buildings of which only a fraction has been excavated. The temples are situated in the middle of the jungle. The surroundings really give it an impressive atmosphere. As we were walking in the jungle between the temples, we came across a bunch of wildlife, which was a really cool extra. We highly recommend to visit Tikal, as it is such an amazing site to explore. You can hire a guide at the entrance to give you a tour. We recommend staying on the beautiful island of Flores, where you can easily book a tour to visit the temples of Tikal.

10 Most Amazing Mayan Ruins - Travel Video

For almost a millennium, the ancient ruins of great architecture lay buried beneath the jungle vegetation on the Yucatan Peninsula. Abandoned by their creators these ancient temples and pyramids are a stunning reminder of a powerful civilization that once ruled the people of Central America. Although the accomplishments of the ancient Mayans are astonishing, no city would escape the inevitable collapse. One by one they were swallowed by the rainforest leaving the amazing Mayan ruins hidden, waiting to be discovered.

Exploring Tikal National Park Guatemala from Sunrise to Sunset- Staying at the Jungle Lodge Hotel

Sleeping in the boundaries of Tikal National Park was a dream come true at the Jungle Lodge Hotel in Tikal Guatemala. After staying in Flores, Guatemala for one night I knew I wanted to get closer to the ruins which were an hour away. So I booked a stay at the Jungle Lodge the only hotel located on the property of Tikal National Park. Want to stay overnight in Tikal National Park? By staying in the suites or dorm style rooms at the Jungle Lodge Hotel you can take a sunrise tour, explore all day with an archeology tour, and then go to a sunset tour to see Tikal's beauty anytime of day.
.
Also it was pretty magical to view the wildlife of the Peten region in Guatemala. Tikal is the largest Mayan ruins in Guatemala and one of the largest Mayan settlements ever. This is one of the top things to do in Guatemala and is worth the trip. #guatemala #tikal #petenguatemala #floresguatemala #guatemalatravel #mayanruins #centralamerica #tikalguatemala #tikalnationalpark

El Mirador 5-day hike | Discovering Lost Mayan Pyramids in the Guatemalan Jungle

El Mirador is a preclassic Mayan city deep in the Northern part of Guatemala. The hikes usually start from Flores (the city which is usually a connection to Tikal - another Mayan city but in a more researched state and very accessible). From Flores people are taken to Carmelita, there we could leave our bags with the mules and start trekking. Altogether it takes 5 days and the leghth of the trek is over 80 km.

I'm Liisu, a 26 year-old doctor from Estonia and in December 2021 I quit my job to travel the world.

Tikal - the amazing Mayan Star Wars ruins @ Tikal, Guatemala ????????

Taking the early morning tour of the breath taking Tikal temple area of the ancient Mayans.

Tikal archeological site in Guatemala - Mayan ruins

Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala in Central America. Guatemala has a lot to offer: Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Livingston, Tikal. Find out about Tikal's link to other Mayan sites like Teotihuacan and Copan

Central American jungle habitat for quetzals, jaguars, monkeys

Text of video (closed captioning is available):

Hey guys. I wanted to tell you about one of my all around favorite countries to visit, Guatemala.

In terms of overall value and what it has to offer, Guatemala might be the best country I have visited. It has everything: breathtaking landscapes; thousands of years of history; coffee plantations; unique wildlife like the jaguar, the spider monkey, and the national bird of Guatemala: the resplendent quetzal, which even appears on the currency. It’s also one of the most budget friendly destinations I’ve been to.
Guatemala has one of the prettiest lakes in the world, Lake Atitlan, which is bordered by three volcanoes. It has the famous colonial city of Antigua. But what it may be most known for is the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal, located deep within the jungle near the northern border with Mexico. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Tikal is one of the largest archeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Construction began around 400 BC and the city remained inhabited until about 950 AD. It then was mostly abandoned until the mid 1800’s when expeditions began. It has been in the process of being excavated ever since. There are thousands of structures at Tikal, but only a fraction have been restored. The most prominent are the main pyramids, numbered Temples one to six. The entire site covers an estimated 23 square miles.
Tikal was a key ally and trading partner with Teotihuacan, near modern-day Mexico City. However, Teotihuacan later conquered them in the 4th century AD. It also was closely affiliated with Copan in Honduras. Both Teotihuacan and Copan are excellent sites to visit that I also highly recommend.
Tikal is also notable for appearing in several movies, such as Star Wars, Episode 4: A New Hope. Tikal also even doubled as the external façade of Hugo Drax’s base in the James Bond movie, Moonraker.
The most notable area in Tikal is the Grand Plaza, which was originally the center of the city. At opposite ends are Temple 1 and Temple 2. You can climb Temple 2, which is 38 meters high.
Make sure to take note of the many Ceiba trees, which is the national tree of Guatemala and can grow to over 200’ tall. Ceiba trees are an important part of Mesoamerican mythology, as they represent a connection of the underworld with the sky.
If you are planning on visiting, make sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a good pair of walking shoes or boots. It’s not an easy hike, as some of the terrain is quite rugged. If you are going to climb the pyramids, be aware that they are steep. Temple 4 is the tallest you can climb, which stands at 70 meters, about half of the height of the great pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
Also Tikal is in the middle of the jungle, so be prepared for the humidity. I recommend going early in the morning, as you will be able to hear the animals in the jungle, and it won’t be quite as hot. Admission is 150 Quetzales, roughly $20. There are paid guides available, or you can download the Tikal Audio Guide or bring a site map on your phone. The internet connection is minimal, so be prepared with a map in advance if you are going on your own. There’s even a sign indicating that you’re leaving the area with access.
There are two hotels near Tikal: Hotel Jungle Lodge Tikal and Hotel Jaguar Inn Tikal, which is where I stayed. Or you can stay in the nearby lake town of Flores. There are also day trips available from San Ignacio in Belize.
I’d recommend exploring as much of Guatemala as you can, because there is a lot more to it than I have covered. Taking a boat taxi through the Rio Dulce gorge leading to the charming town of Livingston is a great side trip. Lake Atitlan and the cities of Antigua and Quetzaltenago are also popular destinations.
Let us know if you are visiting or have visited the great county of Guatemala in the comment section below. Please give us a thumbs up and consider subscribing if you have enjoyed this video.

Welt der Maya - Guatemala - Maya Ruinen von Tikal - Mysterious Mayan ruins

Peter Menzel (PMMedia1) Music by Michael Donner
