Finally Leaving Philippines? WE GOT A TRAVEL PASS ... sort of ???????? Foreigners in Palawan on Lockdown

Become a Patreon: (the top tier will get a personalized shoutout in a video - and new tiers have been added).

We got a travel pass!

We’re currently stranded in El Nido, Palawan, Philippines during the Coronavirus pandemic and we’ve been capturing our time here.

This week we decided to start getting all the paperwork ready to be able to travel. Apparently you require a quarantine certificate, health certificate and travel authority. We head to our local Barangay to get the first part done. It takes longer than expected but we go to do the next step to get our health certificate but we encounter problems.

We head to the one local craft beer place which also serves Ukrainian food and have some beer and a snack.

To be continued in one of our next few videos!!….

Foreigners First Impressions of Manila during COVID-19. Philippines Lockdown ????

In the last video we flew from El Nido (where we’d been stuck for months during quarantine) to Manila to eventually fly home to Canada.

Before leaving Manila we decided to do a bit of filming. Manila was on a General Community Quarantine. We were staying in Makati City so decided to walk around to see what it’s like during GCQ. We first went to a park called Ayala Triangle Gardens where we explored a bit, checked out the greenery and commented on how quiet it was. We only met a few other people and most were out walking their dogs.

We then made our way to one of the best malls in the Makati area called Greenbelt. It’s made up of various sections including a park. At the mall they had temperature checks and signs telling you which way to walk. There were also very few people there. Because you can eat in at some restaurants we stopped and got some local craft beer and some lunch.

How I Escaped from Total Lockdown in the Philippines

All because of #Covid19. It was a long journey that started in Manila..to #Jakarta, Indonesia...and finally to Tokyo, Japan. I had to avoid total #lockdown in #Manila so that I could continue working in #Japan.

CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN | Long Journey Home from the Philippines

It is Saturday, March 14th so we’ve been traveling during the coronavirus for a couple months now and up until yesterday we have been very fortunate that it has had little impact on our plans.

Yesterday morning we woke up to an announcement from the President here that Metro Manila would go on lock down on Sunday the 15th for one month. This has made getting out of the Philippines quite challenging, especially when everyone is trying to make it out within a day and a half.

We were originally planning to be in the Philippines for another 10 days and we spent all day yesterday working through our options. We thought at first we would continue on and just avoid Manila when it came time to leave but now many other towns on Palawan are also announcing lockdowns and limiting movement so we decided it is best to make efforts to leave the Philippines as soon as possible.

We were able to find a flight for tomorrow morning from San Vincente to Clark International Airport which is a few hours north of Manila (and not currently under lock down). We then have another flight booked from Clark to Singapore the following day. From Singapore, we don’t have anything booked just yet.

Day 2

We get picked up from our guesthouse a little before 4AM because we heard the Coron airport was super crazy the day before and we want to make sure we don't have any issues getting checked into our flight.

We get to the airport and there are actually only a handful of other people there. We are the first ones to get checked in and make it through and then we anxiously await the arrival of our plan for the next hour. So many flights are already being cancelled so when our plane arrives, we are SO happy and relieved.

We make it to Clark with relative ease and the Clark airport seems pretty crazy... the departure screens are showing a lot of cancelled flights and every airline has REALLY long lines of people trying to get rescheduled on alternative flights.

We head to our hotel and we had splurged on a room at the Marriott. I am so glad we did because they actually upgrade us to an executive suite! But the main reason we booked with the Marriott was because we had left 2 of our bags in Manila (expecting we would be going back through there before leaving the Philippines). When it turned out we would not be going back to Manila, we tried everything to get our bags back. We attempted to get them shipped home... we contacted countless local courier services to try and get them out of Manila before the lockdown and nothing worked.

When we contacted the Marriott about booking with them and explained our bag situation, they actually agreed to send their concierge down to Manila to pick them up! We were so lucky and honestly without them, I don't think we would have gotten them back!

Day 3

We have another early morning today. Our flight is at 6:40 AM but again we arrive to the airport 3 hours early. We get checked into our flight and it turns out the Clark airport has 2 lounges so we manage to get some coffee before our flight.

We make it to Singapore and are shocked at how empty the airport is after we get off the plane! We actually flew through Singapore 4.5 months ago when we first came to SE Asia and it now has such a different feel.

We booked a hotel in the airport but it's only 10AM so we make our way to the lounge to hang out for a few hours before we can check in. Up to this point we only booked flights through to Singapore based on how quickly everything has been changing (and we first wanted to make sure we could in fact make it to Singapore). But now that we have made it here, we book a flight to San Francisco and then Atlanta for tomorrow.

We get checked into our room and take it easy for the afternoon.. and get ready for yet another long travel day tomorrow.

Day 4

It's another early morning.. we make it to our terminal around 7AM. We board our very long flight to San Francisco and get really lucky to have a whole row to ourselves. We settle in for long flight and after 14 hours, we make it to San Francisco. We originally had a 13 hour layover here but after we landed, we managed to get on an earlier flight that leaves in an hour.

We finally make it to Atlanta but we are not done just yet. While we call Atlanta home, we don't actually have a house here anymore. We will be self quarantining away from our family for at least 2 weeks so we have one final flight to Florida where we can self isolate in a family member's empty home.

Our 5th flight and a quick Uber right later, we make it to Niceville, FL. While we are sad our journey has been interrupted, we feel relieved and very lucky to have made it back with relative ease!

Look back on Rappler's coverage of the Metro Manila and Luzon lockdown in 2020

On March 15, 2020, small teams of Rappler reporters and production specialists went to different entry and exit points in Metro Manila to bring live footage of commuters and travelers. Three years later, Rappler is still at the frontlines of covering the pandemic – its effects on the people, impact on the economy, and of course, accountability from the government.
