Madrid has amazing food.z there I said it! Often when people think of Madrid they think of museums and art and maybe a trip to Toledo. But trust me, this city has an incredible food scene that is less touristy and more underground compared to some other cities in Spain. So, I wanted to make this Madrid food guide so that you can enjoy it like a true local!

Today I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10 incredible bites. We start with the best chocolate in the city (melted from actual chocolate) at an over 100-year-old pastry shop. Then we head to a local and hidden family-run joint for the city’s top Spanish omelette (tortilla española) and a beer (caña).

Next up! Vermouth time. We nip across to the San Miguel market for a sweet red vermouth on tap just like the locals do (along with marcona almonds, campo real olives and a local skewer). Then we head to a SECRET STOP. Cloistered nuns who bake cookies in - the cookies are delicious and moreish and the experience is truly one-of-a-kind. As a friend used to say, like doing a drug deal!

OK… getting full. Next stop - jamón… ham! And the good stuff - acorn-fed jamón ibérico in a family-run ham shop. Around the corner we head to an over 100-year-old tapas bar for one of the most delicious tapas in the city - bull tail stew parcel, paired with a Rioja wine.

Next it’s Madrid’s most famous bite - the calamari sandwich. There are so many places that do this, but we head for the best one! And for more seafood, we swing around into the La Latina neighbourhood for the best bacalao in the city, served with a white wine in a place that is a true Madrid rough-and-tumble tapas bar.

And then - tapas. We swing into Casa Toni, a fantastic tapas bar that does brilliant sweetbreads - mollejas - a delicacy in many restaurants around the world, and here deliciously cooked with skill on the griddle.

And finally, dessert … we head to the most famous pastry shop in the city for the napolitana de crema. The perfect sweet end to a fabulous Madrid food tour. Siesta time!

Want to find those secret nun cookies? Head to Calle Codo (near Plaza de la Villa) and where you see the door with the sign Venta de Dulces, ring the top bell. Hours are Mon-Fri 0930-1300 then 16.30 - 18.30.

Here's the list of where we went:
1. El Riojano
2. Cerveriz
3. Mercado San Miguel (La Hora del Vermut was the stall)
4. Nuns
5. Mercado Jamon Iberico
6. Anciano Rey de los Vinos
7. Casa Revuelta
8. La Campana
9. Casa Toni
10. La Mallorquina

Barcelona is an amazing place to eat! But here’s the thing - it can also be hard to eat well in Barcelona because it’s so touristy. There are just so many options, and lots of them literally are tourist traps. But happily there are also so many incredible places to eat and delicious things to taste and drink if you just know where to look.

In this video I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10+ incredible bites. And we visit 3 famous neighbourhoods across the entire video. We go to the Born, the Gothic Quarter and La Barceloneta - three neighbourhoods that you have to visit, and we’ll eat delicious food in each!

And a number of places are places we visit on Devour Tour’s food tours - including our Tastes & Traditions of Barcelona Food Tour and our Tapas, Taverns & History Food Tour

Also, once you’ve watched this, be sure to check out my playlist of Barcelona videos - including my epic 9-stop Barcelona Tapas Crawl.

So, where do we go?
1. Granja Dulcinea for an incredible suizo (chocolate and cream!)
2. Mercado Santa Caterina: We visit Bar Joan for a fry-up breakfast and cava and Antonio Iberics for a fantastic selection of cured meats. Plus, we visit a stall for delicious escalivada.
3. Historic Casa Gispert for a selection of wood-roasted almonds, and chocolate treats
4. Hofmann Pastisseria for an insane marscapone croissant
5. La Campana for delicious turrón and horchata
6. Xarcutería La Pineda for vermouth and a selection of potato chips with Espinaler sauce, cheeses and salt-cured anchovies
7. Bodega La Palma for patatas bravas and red wine
8. Can Paixano for a delicious butifarra sandwich and also a pork loin and cheese sandwhich - all knocked back with their famous cava
9. La Cova Fumada for a bomba (it was invented here!), grilled squid and grilled sardines
10. Can Ramonet for a delicious seafood fideuá and drinking from the porrón!

Salut!

Paris is one of the most magical cities in the world! But man, it can be tough figuring out where to eat and drink like a local. It’s a city that is so popular with tourists - and that means there is an overwhelming choice of places and a fair few tourist traps to avoid!

So to celebrate our fantastic Ultimate Paris Food Tour I teamed up with our local Devour Paris expert Jess Timmins to take you to 11 places where to you can try some of the must-try tastes in this incredible city.

We focused our food tour in Le Marais district, which is a gorgeous historic part of Paris with lots of family-run business and beautiful winding streets, some of which are as they were centuries ago.

In this video we hit 11 establishments, lots of them family-run businesses. And many of them actual places we visit on our food tour.

So where did we go to eat the best food in Le Marais... and what did we try?

1. Caractère de Cochon - Paris’ best jambon-buerre sandwhich
2. Jean-Paul Hévin - Paris' best macarons and chocolate
3. Tout Autour du Pain - mind-blowing croissant and pain au chocolate
4. Grand Cafe Tortoni - gorgeous coffee shop!
5. Poilâne - famous bakery and French bread how it used to be made
6. Chez Alain Miam Miam - an incredible galette au beurre salé
7. Au Petit Fer a Cheval - pastis for a little aperitif
8. A La Villa de Rodez - a selection of delicious French cheeses and cured meats (saucission)
9. Les Philosophes - lovely bistro for excellent steak tartare and French onion soup
10. L’as du Fellafel - Paris’ best falafel, in the Jewish Quarter
11. L’Etiquette - a fabulous little wine shop (where you can also drink wine by the glass)

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Calle Cava Baja is a fantastic street for a tapas crawl in Madrid. It’s got about 50 tapas bars in just one street, and is in the heart of the famous La Latina neighbourhood. But with so many tapas bars, how can you pick the good from the bad? That’s where this video comes in? Yoly and I decided to hit 7 of our favourites.

Here is Calle Cava Baja on a map:

1. Taberna La Concha: I love this spot for a pre-lunch vermouth. They make their own vermouth, and serve it with a few extra ingredients to give it extra kick. They always pair it with a delicious tapa. And their cooked tapas and wine list are also excellent. A great start!

2. Diaz y Larrouy: The wine bar has been around since 1992 and so is one of the grandfather’ of this street. They have 30-40 wines per glass, and serve delicious tostas. An excellent option for cava by the glass.

3. La Posada de la Villa: There has been a posada (or inn) here since 1642, and I adore hitting the bar in this old tavern. It’s more of a restaurant, but the bar is a great place to grab a glass and even just enjoy the free tapa. It’s just full of history!

4. La Posada del Dragón: These guys do more modern tapas, and I love their tomato salad. But beyond the food, this place is extra special as beneath the glass floor you can see the remains of the medieval walls that once surrounded Madrid.

Honourable mention: La Perejila - great little tapas bar that just didn’t make the final cut.

5. Casa Lucas: Famous on Calle Cava Baja. This place is always packed, but does delicious modern tapas and tostas, and they have an excellent wine list. Don’t worry if you can’t get a table - just squeeze on up at the bar!

6. Taberna Tempranillo: Another classic wine bar that’s been around for a number of years. These guys do an eclectic selection of modern dishes, as well as tostas. And of course great wine by the glass. Also - the wine rack against the back wall is spectacular!

7. Los Huevos de Lucio: Opposite is a famous restaurant called Casa Lucio. And in that restaurant they’re famous for their huevos estrellados (aka. Huevos rotos or broken eggs). Opposite Los Huevos de Lucio is their tavern, and you can get the same dish there. It’s simple, but it’s delicious!

Calle de Ponzano is really easy to get to. It’s only a few Metro stops north of the centre. Head for Metro stops Iglesia or Alonso Cano. If you look on Google Maps ( you’ll see that most of the bars are between Calle Rio Rosas to the north, and the start of the street about 4 blocks south. It gets really busy on weekends and evenings. We were there on a Wednesday at lunchtime which is when it’s quieter.

Here are the places we went to, and the address, and what we ordered

Old school beer and seafood bar - true Madrid! There are two on the street - we went to the original at this address:

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯

Seville is possibly the best city in Spain for eating tapas. Whether you’re after modern tapas, or more traditional dishes, this city is simply mouthwatering. Perhaps the best place to eat in Spain!

I was in town for a Devour Tours get-together and on my last day - with a broken voice! - I decided to hit the bars. So, where did we go?

1. First we hit Casa Morales. The second oldest still-running bar in the city. It opened in the mid 19th century, and is still going strong. Here we started (breakfasted!) fino sherry, some excellent manchego cheese and a delicious montadito of bacalao (salt-cold) on bread with salmorejo. And, of course, we admired the gorgeous huge tinajas (wine vats). This place is unforgettable.

2. Next it was time for some more substantial cooked traditional tapas. So we headed to Bodeguita Romero, where they do killer versions of some of the city’s most classic dishes. First I tried the pringá, which is a fabulous sandwich of pork, blood sausage and other meat. Then I tried their carrillada (pork cheek) which literally melts in your mouth like marshmallow.

3. Next we went modern, heading to new favourite Palo Cortao. If you love sherry, this is the place for you. They have 80 sherries by the glass. And the food is also fantastic. From the false tomato, to the mackerel on sweet peas to the phenomenal cheese plate… this spot is definitely one of my new favourites.

4. Time to go totally off the beaten path. Mateo Ruiz is a heaving old joint that’s well-known for its excellent fried bacalao and €1 wine… the place was packed, and the atmosphere incredible.

5. Finally we hit La Tienda de la Azotea, and fantastic little joint that serves delicious and imaginative modern tapas and has an excellent wine list. I had an amazing almadraba tuna taco, some delicious octopus in a mole verde and some fantastic red wine from the Seville region.

Well stuffed… I rolled home, and back to Madrid… and to Yoly. I hope you liked the video!

5 BEST Madrid Street Food

Madrid Street Food and Spanish food in general is varied and delicious. There is something on offer around every corner. There are a number of food markets in Madrid selling street food, including jamon, tapas, sangria, paella, churos, thick hot chocolate, pinchos (pintxo) and various other delights.

We're in Madrid in Spain. It's lunch time and we're always hungry. Today we are going to experience the street food of Madrid and all that the city has to offer.

Right near the centre of Madrid, near the Plaza Mayor, there is a food market call Mercado de San Miguel were we are now. It's an indoor food market that has an amazing selection of food to offer.

If you come to Madrid, then one of the things that you have to try is the Jamon. It's a delicious Spanish cured ham. There are lots of varieties, so there is lots to choose from. The best way to have jamon is in these little paper cones. The jamon is really nice, it's not too salty and it's got a creamy texture. It's really delicious.

One of the best things about coming to a market is that you can try some new things. We're going to go for the sea urchin. I've never had sea urchin before. This is kind of like a stuffed sea urchin. It smells kind of fishy. It has a really strong fishy flavour, kind of like mashed potatoes from the sea. It's not my favourite thing ever.

The San Miguel Market is really vibey. It's really busy and there are a lot of tourists, but it's got a fantastic atmosphere and vibe. It's a great place to eat street food.

One of the main things that you must try is called pinchos (pintxo) which is basically a baguette type bread with various ingredients on it. Fresh ingredients on bread, you can't really go wrong. The hardest part with pinchos is keeping the ingredients on the bread.

One baguette with fried squid rings please. We've already had a lot to eat, but we've seen these all over Madrid. It's fried calamari in a bread roll. Sounds like heaven, looks like heaven and tastes like heaven. Not good for your health, but very tasty.

You can't come to Madrid without having some sangria. It's fruity, it's cold, it's alcoholic magic. It's super refreshing. I'm more of an ice cream fan to cool down. There's a lot of places selling ice cream in Madrid. I've gone for chocolate. It's always my go to flavour.

Down a narrow street in the middle of Madrid (Pasadizo San Ginés), there's one of the oldest chocolaterias in Madrid. They do the most amazing thick hot chocolate with churros in Madrid. Churros is this kind of fried dough that they put in sausage / finger shapes which are perfect for dipping. The hot chocolate here is thick, warm and delicious and not too rich.

There are a number of terraces dotted throughout Madrid. I suggest to not go to Plaza Mayor as it's very expensive and a bit of a tourist trap. We've on one of the smaller squares (Santa Ana) and we're trying tapas. which are little, small dishes in various types. This is the croquette and we're also having calamares or fried squid.

That's it for our food tour of Madrid.

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Have you been to Lisbon? It’s an incredible food city. And recently we launched our first Devour Tour there - our Tastes & Traditions of Lisbon Food Tour. And to celebrate it, I decided to make a video along with Ellis Dixon, our wonderful local operations manager and Lisbon expert. Get ready, because this Lisbon food tour is delicious!

So, where did we go?

1. Confeitaria Nacional: This place has been open since the early 1800s and it’s a fantastic place to start your day - a bica (espresso) and a pastry surrounded by gorgeous turn-of-the-century decor.

2. Ginjinha Sem Rival: I love this tiny little shop where you can get a bottle of Portugal’s famous cherry liqueur - and also take a shot of it at the bar. This place has been going since 1840!

3. O Trevo: You have to eat a bifana sandwich when you’re in Lisbon. It’s simple, but delicious - stewed pork, and then you douse it in piri piri sauce and yellow mustard. And this was the place Anthony Bourdain visited!

4. Casa Pereira: I love how this old shop smells like coffee, tea and chocolate. And the walls are lined with incredible bottles of port. So if you want to grab a bottle of port while in the city, this is your place!

5. Trobadores: This place is straight out of Game of Thrones. And despite seemingly a little tacky, it’s actually a place locals come to. You can drink mead (fermented honey) and grill chorizo sausage right at your table!

6. Bonjardim: Piri piri chicken is famous, and if you’re going to get it in Lisbon (and you should), this is the place! The chicken was so deliciously juicy, and the skin fabulously spicy.

7. O Gaiteiro: I love a good old school restaurant. And in Lisbon these tascas the best spots to order grilled fish: sardines, salt-cold and octopus. O Gaiteiro is a place we visit on Devour’s Lisbon food tour and it’s fantastic - great food, full of local clients.

8. Sol e Pesca: This former fishing shop still looks like… a fishing shop. Apart from the enormous display of canned fish. And please, don’t be afraid of canned fish - it can be absolutely delicious, and this is the place to try it!

9. Manteigaria: Custard tarts are everywhere in Lisbon, but not all custard tarts are created equal. These ones from Manteigaria have a wonderfully crispy and flaky pastry, and custard is like delicious molten lava. A plus, you can watch them making them through the glass window.

Madrid is an amazing place to eat tapas! But there are so many tapas bars that the challenge is knowing exactly where to go! I love a lot of the tapas bars in the old centre of Madrid, but I also love to escape into the local neighbours where the locals eat - because that's where you can find some truly spectacular tapas. If I were going to write a Madrid travel guide, it would definitely include a lunch or dinner of tapas in this part of town!

In this video my wife Yoly and I dive into the Ibiza neighbourhood, which is REALLY close to the old centre (quick metro or short walk) for five of my most favourite tapas bars in all of Madrid.

If you love Spanish food, this is the video for you! We eat plump prawns, slow-cooked bull tail stew, scallops, artichokes, venison, partridge, fresh fish... I could go on and one. And of course we pair it all with great Spanish wine!

I've included info below on how to get to this area. And remember - you don't need to reserve a table at any of the bars. Just turn up and hit the bar! You can reserve a table for a slightly calmer experience... but I'll leave that up to you!

HOW TO GET TO THESE BARS
The neighbourhood is called Ibiza (yes, just like the island!), and so you should head to Metro Ibiza (line 9). Alternatively, the neighbourhood is just on the other side (the east side) of the Retiro park. So one idea is to walk across the Retiro before lunch and then hit these bars. Or, take the Metro to Ibiza and then you can sleep it off (or walk it off) in the park afterwards! Or... another idea is go to the Prado Museum during the day, and then wander across the park and hit these bars for dinner.
