Traditional ASSAMESE THALI with Fish, Pigeon and Mutton + Temple Visit | Guwahati, Assam, India

One of my favorite things about traveling around India is how diverse the country is in terms of food, languages, and culture. The country really is a world of its own and its wide range of things to experience is what keeps me coming back again and again. And I have to say, you haven’t truly experienced India until you’ve visited its northeastern states. I fell in love with them when I visited in March of 2019 and I hope you will, too! Come along with me as I continue my exploration of the Assamese city of Guwahati!

My adventures with my new friend Kabyashree continued on day two of my northeast India trip with a visit to another local temple. This one, Navagraha Temple, is also known as the Nine Planets Temple. There are lots of monkeys that hang around it. They’re not really a fan of cameras!

Nine Planets Temple was built by the Ahoms in the 18th century. This ancient temple was built to study the nine major celestial bodies in Hindu mythology. Today, people go there to make offerings to the planets and get blessings to sort out hardships in their lives.

The temple is beautiful and peaceful, but I advise being careful with your shoes when you visit temples. Sometimes shoes get stolen while their owners are worshipping inside, especially in the bigger and busier cities.

After leaving the temple, Kabyashree and I visited a viewpoint where we looked out at Guwahati and the river. It’s really beautiful, but then we got attacked by one of the little monkeys! We decided to kill some time before our thali reservation by feeding them. They went crazy over them!

From there, we walked down the mountain and back into the town. We saw a beautiful neighborhood with really nice houses and idols. Then, after negotiating with our rickshaw driver (our ride eventually cost us 40 rupees/$0.57 U.S.), we arrived at Paradise Restaurant for lunch.

Lunch consisted of an Assamese thali, which consisted of chicken, two types of fish, mutton, pigeon curry, dal, a mashed potato dish called pitika, a vegetable dish called khar, vegetable fry, rice, and more. This thali, the Parampara Thaali, is smaller than other ones you can find around India, but it’s specific to the local cuisine.

We started with gooseberry soup with a type of thick, crispy flatbread or cracker. Like most soups and warm drinks here in India, the soup was served boiling hot. It’s really tangy and had a bit of lime in it. Then the thali arrived!

I went with the khar and dal first and mixed it with the rice. It was sweet from the papaya in it and was really delicious! Next, I tried the spinach and aloo pitika. It was amazing! There was some spice in it. I mixed it with the dal, which was also really tasty.

Next was the pigeon, which was very bony, tasty, and had some nice fat on it. The sesame curry gave it an interesting flavor and it reminded me of goat! I accidentally swallowed a tiny bone though, so be careful when you eat this dish!

Then I mixed the sesame oil curry with the rice, got rid of the bones, and dug in. It needed some spice in my opinion, and I didn’t love the amount of bones, but other than that, the pigeon was good.

Next, I took some fish tenga and mixed it with the rice. Then I carefully pulled the fish apart to get rid of as many bones as possible before I dug in. The fish’s skin was fantastic! Then I went for the head; there’s a lot of meat there!

Then I tried a steamed fish with a mustard sauce inside a banana leaf. The fish was like butter! It practically fell apart in my mouth and was infused with the flavor of the banana leaf. Then I had some deep-fried eggplant with a mint-coriander chutney. I didn’t love the chutney, but I really liked the eggplant!

We ended with a dessert that we had to mix together ourselves. It contained puffed rice, cream, and jaggery. When mixed together, it creates a type of rice pudding. The puffed rice absorbs everything really well. It’s like a rice pudding on steroids!

I loved this thali! It reminded me of meals I had in southern India where I got to eat with my hands.

If you loved coming along on my temple visit and Assamese thali lunch, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment! Also please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming content! I’ll see you in the next travel/food adventure!

Ethnic/Tribal Food Series: Rabha Tribe, Assam | Silkworms + Red Ant Eggs + Rice Beer

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

► More street food in Assam:

Starting this week onward we bring you a new series named Ethnic Food Tour series that catalogues our food explorations across the diverse and rich tribal panorama of our country and beyond.

It commences with the rustic cuisine of the Rabha tribe from Bongaigaon, Assam. Their meal is hued with the unique earthy notes as they are primarily procured from the forests. For this, we visited the Ujan Rabhapara village in Kakoijana in Bongaigaon district of Assam along with our brilliant hosts Chayanika, Sishir and Risha whose insights helped us to get familiar with the new culture with ease.

En route to the village, we stopped at a local household to try the traditional Assamese jolpan. It is the umbrella term for the traditional breakfast dishes that the locals relish daily. The eclectic range of dishes under the jolpan are primarily rice-based. We tried the most elementary of them i.e. the sira doi gur and boondi laddo. It was such a comforting combination.

After a short drive, we reached Ujan Rabhapara, a place known for white langurs. Nestled amidst the green canopy of the Kakoijana forest expanse, this quaint sleepy village is home to the Rabhas.

Along with our hosts Chayanika, Sisir, Risha and Sanjib Sharma we meet the welcoming womenfolk of the village who had gathered to cook a traditional Rabha meal for us. Since agriculture based activity are the mainstay of their livelihood, naturally their cuisine is dominated by the components procured from the same.

Hence it not a surprise that it includes rice which is the staple, various local herbs, meats, fishes and insects. Bugs and insects like the silkworm, red ants , grasshoppers etc. are considered to be delicacies.

Another important element of the Rabha cuisine is the local rice beer that is brewed in almost all households and are consumed not occasionally but daily.

During our explorations we tried some of their delicacies that are prepared at the households on a regular basis. The highlights of the meal were chokoth rice beer, country chicken cooked with rice flour batter and silkworm and red ant eggs. We are truly grateful to our amazing hosts for serving us such a unique meal with so much enthusiasm and patience.

Best Assamese dishes cooking and eating with renowned Chef Atul Lahkar I Guwahati Narangi Bazar Tour

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

► More street food in Assam:

In our pursuit to be familiar with the diverse canvas of the traditional Assamese cuisine, especially the local and rustic dishes, we were joined by a person who is an authority on the Assamese cuisine. He is none other than Chef Atul Lahkar who has travelled for years through the length and breadth of the state to document the traditional recipes of different tribes and communities.

Our food explorations with began with the visit to the Narangi bazaar, the local vegetable and fish market from where Chef Atul loves to procure his ingredients for cooking. We were there to buy some fresh ingredients which would then be transformed into some delectable dishes by the magical touch of the chef. On Sundays this market gets a special stocks from the local communities including the small-time vegetable growers who grow them in their backyards.

After buying the essentials we went to his house for cooking a few of the traditional dishes. It was a lovely house interspersed with green spots. The open kitchen area was a beautiful space. In no time Chef Atul got the ingredients ready and began cooking. He prepared three rustic dishes for us that he had collected from different communities. These included the pabho masor logot khorisha (pabho fish cooked with bamboo shoots), lai xaakor logot kukuda mankho (country chicken cooked with mustard greens) and dhekiya xaakor alu bhaji (Potato and fiddlehead fern fry). He also gave us insightful details about the less popular side of the Assamese cuisine as found in different tribes and communities across the state.

Before sitting down for lunch we tasted the rice wine, a strong and concentrated alcoholic drink that was made from rice and herbs. With 70% alcohol content, it was very intense. The lunch spread included steamed rice, dal and the dishes that we had cooked. Everything was simple, subtle yet lip-smacking. We are immensely grateful to Chef Atul for treating us to such a soul-satisfying meal. This nuanced culinary sojourn of Assam’s food scenario was indeed a pleasant revelation. We would also like to thanks Sishir for his inputs.

GIANT Assamese THALI 20 ITEMS! + Tezpur Attractions | Tezpur, Assam, India

???? TEZPUR BUZZ:
???? WATCH: Meghalaya Thali
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH: in

March of 2019, I took a solo trip to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India. What I found there blew my mind and challenged everything I thought I knew about India. I took a deep dive into this region’s unique history and culture, diverse natural environments, and mind-blowing cuisine, and learned that these states are quite different from the rest of the country. I’m so excited to share what I experienced with you guys. Come along with me as I explore the magnificent world of northeast India!

After arriving in Tezpur around 10 a.m., I hit the ground running and linked up with my friend Kamal from Tezpur Buzz, who took me around to some of the city’s attractions. Then we had a huge Assamese thali that contained 20 different items! I couldn’t wait to seem more of the city. Let’s go explore Tezpur!

I hopped onto the back of Kamal’s bike and we headed off to our first stop. Immediately, I noticed a huge difference between Tezpur and my time in Meghalaya: in Tezpur there were lots of cows roaming the streets, whereas there were none in Meghalaya. Cows are sacred in Assam, so they’re free to roam.

We passed through the Chowk Bazaar, which are markets, and arrived at Radheshyam Hotel, which is famous for its chai and sweets. I couldn’t wait to try some! I watched the cooks work in the kitchen for a bit and then went back to the dining area to eat.

I started with the pyaaj kachori, which is a fried onion fritter. The dough was crispy on the outside and soft inside and contained multiple layers. It wasn’t greasy at all and also contained a nice masala. I loved how light and airy it was!

Then I went with the chai. I could taste lots of ginger and cardamom in it. It was very frothy and milky and almost a darker kind of chai. Then I had some rabri, a sweet, condensed milk dish I’d had before. It was very rich with big chunks of milk. It was delicious! Everything cost us only about 50 rupees/$0.71 U.S.

Then we went to Chitralekha Udyan Park, a historical park that contains ancient stones that have mythological figures carved into them. They were beautiful! There were also banyan trees. This area was Chitralekha’s house and the stones are the remains of it. It was the coolest park I’d ever been to! It was a park and an archaeological site!

Next, we saw the beautiful Shri Shri Ganesh Mandir Gate, which has intricate carvings and statues of Hindu gods, elephants, and Hanuman on it. Through the gate is the Ganesha Ghat on the Brahmaputra River. It was clean and peaceful!

From there, we headed up a hill to Agnigarh Park. Agnigarh is a hill with a spiral staircase wrapping around it. I loved the air quality there. It smelled so clean and there were lots of trees everywhere! At the very top is an open-air platform that offers an amazing view of the river, the bridge, the town, and much more!

Then it was time to eat! We headed to the restaurant to get our Assamese thali. I started with the dal and rice, followed by the eggplant, which was amazing and a little spicy. Then I tried the rajma, which consists of beans in a thick but light gravy. Next was a spinach-like vegetable and a tasty aloo dish with carrots and onion.

Aloo pitika was next. It contained some chilies, so it was hot. I followed that with a super tender and buttery mutton that I was in awe of. It contained nice spices but wasn’t too spicy. Next was duck, which was delicious and fatty and contained a big bone. I loved how tender and juicy it was.

The chicken came in a dark curry and contained a different type of masala. Then was the fish, which didn’t contain any bones and came in a light curry. It was a little salty. Then I went with the crispy papad and some delicious and super fatty pork with vegetables. The vegetables were amazing! Then I tried a type of pumpkin, which was like a fried sweet potato. I loved it!

Next was a milky rice pudding, followed by khar that was made of papaya but wasn’t sweet. Then was a lentil chutney and a light and super mild green dal. Everything was amazing!

I hope you enjoyed coming with me to explore Tezpur! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also please subscribe to my channel!
