EGYPT: Valley of the Kings - Luxor
The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Egypt where rock cut tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt).
The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. It consists of two valleys, East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and West Valley (only one tomb is open to the public).
The Valley was used for primary burials for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC. It contains at least 63 tombs, beginning with Thutmose I (or possibly earlier, during the reign of Amenhotep I) and ending with Ramesses X or XI, although non-Royal burials continued in usurped tombs.
Only about 20 of the tombs actually contain the remains of kings. The remains of nobles and of the royal family, together with unmarked pits and embalming caches, make up the rest. Around the time of Ramesses I (ca. 1301 BC) construction commenced in the separate Valley of the Queens.
The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues as to the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the pharaohs.
The tombs were constructed and decorated by the workers of the village of Deir el-Medina. The daily lives of these workers are quite well known and are recorded in tombs and official documents.
In modern times the valley has become famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (with its rumours of the curse of the pharaohs), and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. In 1979, it became a World Heritage Site, along with the rest of the Theban Necropolis. Exploration, excavation and conservation continues in the valley.
Most of the tombs are not open to the public (18 of the tombs can be opened, but they are rarely open at the same time), and officials occasionally close those that are open for restoration work. Tour guides are no longer allowed to lecture inside the tombs, and visitors are expected to proceed quietly and in single file through the tombs. This is to minimize time in the tombs and prevent the crowds from damaging the surfaces of the decoration.
El Qurn is the highest point (420 m) in the Theban Hills. It has an almost pyramidal shape when viewed from the entrance to the Valley of the Kings, and therefore some Egyptologists believe it may have been the reason for choosing the location as a royal necropolis.

We only had one day to explore Luxor, Egypt, so even though we barely slept on the overnight train from Cairo, we went out at 7:00 A.M. to be the first and only tourists at the incredible Luxor Temple! It was totally worth it because it wasn't too hot yet and we took all the videos and photos we wanted with NO other people! Once the first tour bus arrived, we headed back to our hotel and had breakfast (AND COFFEE), but then decided to nap for few hours to wait out the mid day heat before heading to the Valley of the Kings via a $0.10 ferry and $7 taxi. Once again, we felt like there should have been way more tourists than there was, but we weren't complaining!

There are over 65 tombs in the Valley of the Kings. However, not all of them are open to the public. Many tombs are closed either for restoration work or to minimize the traffic of tourists in the tombs.
???? Here is the list of open tombs that are included on your entrance ticket into the Valley of the Kings. Of these eight tombs, you can visit three with your entrance ticket.
KV1 – Ramesses VII
KV2 – Ramesses IV
KV6 – Ramesses IX
KV8 – Merenptah
KV11 – Ramesses III
KV14 – Tausert-Setnakht
KV15 – Seti II
KV47 – Siptah
There are three additional tombs that you can visit with an extra ticket. Here is the list with the additional price for each tomb.

Officially known as The Great and Majestic Necropolis of the Millions of Years of the Pharaoh, Life, Strength, Health in the West of Thebes, the Valley of the Kings is home to the royal tombs of the New Kingdom pharaohs (1550 to 1069 BCE).
Chosen for its remote location in a valley opposite the ancient city of Thebes, now Luxor, the necropolis is known to consist of 63 tombs of varying grandeur: from simple pits to complex multi-chambered tombs decorated with exquisite reliefs and paintings.
The tombs are opened to the public on rotation to protect them from the damage caused by the presence of visitors, so access depends on when you visit. If they're open, our favourites are the tombs of Thutmose III, Ramesses VI, Ramesses IX, Siptah and Ramesses IV.
Tutankhamun's tomb is also located here in the Valley of the Kings. While it still contains the mummified body of one of the most well-known pharaohs, the huge number objects that were buried with the ancient king are now exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
We recommend arriving at the Valley of the Kings as early as you can to avoid queues and the stifling heat of the day as much as possible.
Visiting the Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings is an incredible place loaded with fascinating history and the best way to make the most of your visit is with an expert guide to explain the details of each tomb and pharaoh. A popular way to experience the site is to combine the tour with a visit to the other nearby monuments of the Valley of the Queens, the Colossi of Memnon and the Temple of Hatshepsut:

The Valley of the Queens is located across the Nile from Luxor, near to the Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon and the Temple of Hatshepsut.
One of the best known Egyptian queens, Nefertari Meritmut was the first of Ramesses the Great's Royal Wives. Named Beautiful companion, beloved of Mut, she was well educated and involved in politics. Among many other nicknames, Ramesses called her the one for whom the sun shines, and her importance can be felt immediately on entering her spectacular tomb. Exquisitely colourful scenes decorate the walls of the three chambers and their connecting corridors; while golden stars twinkle down from the ceilings. Ramesses' love for his first wife is also demonstrated in the enormous rock temple dedicated to her that stands beside his own at Abu Simbel.

Adults: 80 LE (€ 4.40).
Students (with valid ID): 40 LE (€ 2.20).
Tomb of Nefertari: 1,000 LE (€ 55) plus Valley of the Queens ticket.
LUXOR PASS
The #LuxorPass is a single ticket that includes all of the archaeological sites on the West Bank and East Bank of Luxor. There are two versions of this pass.
The standard Luxor Pass includes all of the sites on the East and West Bank, with the exception of the tombs of Seti I and Nefertari. The Luxor Pass costs $100 USD for adults and $50 USD for people under 30 years with a valid student ID card. In euros, the fee is €90 for adults and €45 for students.
The Premium Luxor Pass includes all of the archaeological sites on the East and West Banks, as well as the tombs of Seti I and Nefertari. The Luxor Premium Pass costs $200 USD for adults and $100 USD for people under 30 years with a valid student ID card. In euros, the fee is €180 for adults and €90 for students.
The passes are valid for 5 days.
These passes also give you entry in each site without waiting in line. However, during our visit in 2019, we never had to wait in a queue to enter any site in Egypt.

The valley of the kings contains 63 tombs and chambers that have been discovered so far. Tombs range in size from a small pit to the biggest which contains at least 130 rooms for the sons of Rameses II. The most famous burial discovered was the intact grave of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter. Located close to the New Kingdom power center of Luxor (Thebes). LUXOR EGYPT | VALLEY OF THE KINGS | 4K
Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes, the great capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom, and the glorious city of Amun, later to become the god Amun-Ra. The city was regarded in the ancient Egyptian (approximate pronunciation: Waset), which meant city of the scepter, and later in Demotic Egyptian as ta jpt (conventionally pronounced as tA ipt and meaning the shrine/temple, the temple now known by its Arabic name Karnak, meaning fortified village), which the ancient Greeks adapted as Thebai and the Romans after them as Thebae. Thebes was also known as the city of the 100 gates, sometimes being called southern Heliopolis ('Iunu-shemaa' in Ancient Egyptian), to distinguish it from the city of Iunu or Heliopolis, the main place of worship for the god Ra in the north. It was also often referred to as niw.t, which simply means city, and was one of only three cities in Egypt for which this noun was used (the other two were Memphis and Heliopolis); it was also called southern city, as the southernmost of them.
The importance of the city started as early as the 11th Dynasty, when the town grew into a thriving city. Montuhotep II, who united Egypt after the troubles of the First Intermediate Period, brought stability to the lands as the city grew in stature. The Pharaohs of the New Kingdom in their expeditions to Kush, in today's northern Sudan, and to the lands of Canaan, Phoenicia and Syria saw the city accumulate great wealth and rose to prominence, even on a world scale. Thebes played a major role in expelling the invading forces of the Hyksos from Upper Egypt, and from the time of the 18th Dynasty to the 20th Dynasty, the city had risen as the political, religious and military capital of Ancient Egypt.
The city attracted peoples such as the Babylonians, the Mitanni, the Hittites of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), the Canaanites of Ugarit, the Phoenicians of Byblos and Tyre, the Minoans from the island of Crete. A Hittite prince from Anatolia even came to marry with the widow of Tutankhamun, Ankhesenamun. The political and military importance of the city, however, faded during the Late Period, with Thebes being replaced as political capital by several cities in Northern Egypt, such as Bubastis, Sais and finally Alexandria.
However, as the city of the god Amun-Ra, Thebes remained the religious capital of Egypt until the Greek period. The main god of the city was Amun, who was worshipped together with his wife, the Goddess Mut, and their son Khonsu, the God of the moon. With the rise of Thebes as the foremost city of Egypt, the local god Amun rose in importance as well and became linked to the sun god Ra, thus creating the new 'king of gods' Amun-Ra. His great temple at Karnak, just north of Thebes, was the most important temple of Egypt right until the end of antiquity.
Later, the city was attacked by Assyrian emperor Assurbanipal who installed a new prince on the throne, Psamtik I. The city of Thebes was in ruins and fell in significance. However, Alexander the Great did arrive at the temple of Amun, where the statue of the god was transferred from Karnak during the Opet Festival, the great religious feast. Thebes remained a site of spirituality up to the Christian era, and attracted numerous Christian monks of the Roman Empire who established monasteries amidst several ancient monuments including the temple of Hatshepsut, now called Deir el-Bahri (the northern monastery).

The ancient Egyptians built massive public monuments for their pharaohs. But they also spent time and treasure creating hidden underground mausoleums.
The most famed collection of such elaborate tombs—the Valley of the Kings—lies on the Nile's west bank near Luxor.
During Egypt's New Kingdom (1539-1075 B.C.), the valley became a royal burial ground for pharaohs such as Tutankhamun, Seti I, and Ramses II, as well as queens, and high priests, and other elites of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties.
The tombs evidence elaborate preparations for the next world, in which humans were promised continuing life and pharaohs were expected to become one with the gods. Mummification was used to preserve the body so that the deceased's eternal soul would be able to reanimate it in the afterlife.

Here are the costs as of April 2023 for an adult
Valley entrance : 200 egp this allows for you to pick any 3 of the 18 tombs they open, but be aware they never open them all at once so your choices may be limited depending on time of year and other archeological work going on. the following are additional costs
Tomb of Ay: 60 egp
Tomb of Seti: 1000 egp
Tomb of Tutankhamun: 300 Egp
Tomb of Ramses 5 & 6 :100 egp
Trolley ride round trip : 10 Egp
Drinks and snacks are available inside, but you can bring your own and water on the street cost about 9 cents vs 2 dollars inside the complex.
WC personal will require a tip to use the facilities
toilet paper may or may not be available with that tip and we highly recommend packing sanitizer.
Wear closed toed shoes as you will be walking in dirt and rock on very uneven ground and down steep stairways into the tombs.

The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Egypt where, for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock-cut tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt.
The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The wadi consists of two valleys: the East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and the West Valley (Valley of the Monkeys).
With the 2005 discovery of a new chamber and the 2008 discovery of two further tomb entrances, the valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers, ranging in size from KV54, a simple pit, to KV5, a complex tomb with over 120 chambers. It was the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, as well as a number of privileged nobles. The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues as to the beliefs and funerary practices of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the pharaohs.

The Valley of the Kings is in the west bank of Luxor (Thebes in ancient Egypt). There are 63 known tombs of Pharaoh's and nobles of high importance from the 16th to 11th centuries BC. These tombs, many with elaborate, beautiful paintings inside, were cut into the rocky cliffs and hidden so the Pharaoh's and their treasures could remain undisturbed. This is where King Tut's tomb was discovered intact with his treasures in the 20th century. They are now in a museum in Cairo.
