Exploring Duck Island (AKA Snake Island), by foot and by drone. Ep80
Ep80. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we explore Main Duck Island, which is located in the middle of Lake Ontario. The free docks on the island are something to look forward to because the waves can get pretty big out there, especially if it is bad weather. There are trails to get around the island but with the high water levels this year, the trails are under water. So, the only way to explore the other side of the island this trip was by putting up the Mavic Pro Drone. On the other side of the island is an unmanned lighthouse, abandoned houses and sandy beaches. So there is some great Mavic Pro Drone footage in this episode.
This trip was mostly planned to be a recon trip for Janice and I to confirm to our son Jake that Duck Island lived up to it's reputation of being Snake Island, and it did! Jake really has little interest in long sailing trips, but he was excited to join us on a trip to Snake Island.
In a future episode we return to Duck Island with Jake and her dad Larry where they chose to sleep in tents on Snake Island (No Thanks!) and this time we have a Gas Motor for our Dinghy that gets us to the other side of the Island. We get to go explore inside those abandoned lighthouse keeper's houses, see the big lighthouse up close and check out the much better sand beaches on that side, where we go swimming in the crystal clear blue water that looks like the Caribbean.

Ep125. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we take our son Jake to an Island we have been to before, Main Duck Island. The Island is obviously a misnomer because we never see any Ducks but you can't go 10 feet without seeing a snake. That is the whole reason Jake really wanted to come sailing with us. Not because he enjoys sailing, which he doesn't, but because he loves snakes and we promised him that he would be blown away by how many snakes are on this Island. I always call this Island Snake Island and you will see why after you see this episode.

We stoped at Noumea New Caledonia fro 2 days off the Nowegian Jewel where we were able to explore the island a little more. We were only suppose to say here for 1 day, but because of the Coronavirus our itinerary was changing daily. We had fun at Duck Island however theres not much to see or do in Noumea it is a quiet island for simply relaxation.

Snorkeling at Duck Island, Noumea - île aux Canards - New Caledonia
Duck Island, or île aux Canards, is just off the coast of Noumea, New Caledonia at Anse Vata Beach. It's a popular destination for tourists, both staying in Noumea, and visiting for the day from cruise ships, and so there is an assortment of tours that come here - or of course, you can find your own way to the island.
We visited Duck Island while we were in Noumea on a cruise with Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, and found the snorkelling to be pretty fantastic!
A few words of warning though.
1. The beach is largely broken coral, so you need something on your feet to walk around. Reef shoes are a good idea.
2. The best snorkelling is in deeper water, around the outside of the protected reef area. This means you need to be a confident swimmer.
3. Outside the reef the waves can get rough if the wind picks up. Again, you need to be a confident swimmer, especially given it can be a fair swim back to shore if the weather turns sour and you are a decent way out along the snorkel trail.
That said, you can see beautiful fish closer to shore, but the best is further out.

Ep79. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we sail out into the middle of Lake Ontario to Duck Island, which has a reputation of being an Island completely infested with Snakes. We are doing this first trip to the Island to Recon it to see if it lives up to it's reputation.
Janice's wants to bring her Son Jake and Father Larry here to camp in a future weekend. They both love camping and Jake loves catching and playing with snakes. I am more of a I don't mind seeing snakes from a distance kind of guy, so I am glad that weekend I will be sleeping on my boat and not in a tent on shore.
We recon it and it completely lives up to it's reputation. On our first 2 minute walk on shore, I must have seen 6 snakes and you can hear them slithering through the long grass around you, even when you can't see them. It is a bit creepy thinking that Jake and Larry will have to be walking to an outhouse in the middle of the night, in what appears to be a pit of snakes.
You will have to see the future episode to see how it all turns out. Again, I'm REALLY glad I get to sleep on the boat. Although many of these snakes are water snakes that swim through water. I watched one eating a fish. Yeeeesh!
