Dominica (/dəˈmɪˌnɪkə/ or /ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/; French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a sovereign island country.[8] The capital, Roseau, is located on the leeward side of the island. It is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island lies south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.[5]

The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago and later colonised by Europeans, predominantly by the French from the 1690s to 1763. Columbus is said to have passed the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493, and the island's name is derived from the Latin for Sunday. Great Britain took possession in 1763 after its defeat of France in the Seven Years' War, and it gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.

Its name is pronounced with stress falling either on second syllable of the word, after the Latin word dŏmĭnĭcă lordly, or on the third syllable, after the French name Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the Nature Isle of the Caribbean for its natural environment.[9] It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, called Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot, also known as the imperial amazon and found only on Dominica, is the island's national bird and featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.

Roseau, DOMINICA: a 3.5 Minute Video

Part of a new series of videos edited down to 3.5 minutes to show the highlights.

Join me on this whistle-stop tour of Dominica, a tiny island nation that often gets confused as being the Dominican Republic, which it isn't.

Driving in the Roseau Valley

A quick drive from the Botanical Gardens up towards Trafalgar, and back!

Dominica: Driving through the lush jungles of Dominca towards the capital Roseau

Moving around from the country of the Commonwealth of Dominica is such a beautiful experience. The lush foliage, flowers and mountain views are astounding. Dominica is essentially a mountainous jungle with villages carved out of the jungle. Most of the roads are one lane roads but are in good condition. The roads move along the sides of the mountains and many have steep cliffs or make dramatic cuts through mountain tops and deep valleys. The views are just breathtaking. People drive at a comfortable pace and are courteous to oncoming vehicles. Everyone is relaxed and friendly (no road rage).

If you have ever been to a botanical garden in a large city and have smelled the smell of tropical trees and plants, then you will know what it is to smell the air in Dominica. The entire island smells of a beautiful odor of tropical foliage so fresh is the smell that it is completely intoxicating.

The sound in the video is the wind blowing against the camera because I had my arm out the window holding the camera while Pepper was driving (Pepper from As he drives around corners Pepper often beeps to notify oncoming traffic that a car is coming in the opposite direction. This is a safety measure that is ingrained in everyone's driving habits in Dominica, and especially necessary when there is a cliff at the side.

Mission visit to Dominica.

We arrived in Dominica on Thursday however this was the first day to spend in the Capital Roseau. We also had a trip to Trafalgar Falls on the way back to Wotten Waven.

Their was some excitement and a tense situation when the brakes went out on our friends truck on the was from the airport . Clement was driving in a very mountainous area when the brakes failed . To keep the vehicle under control and not be stranded in the mountains Clement drove in low gear and used the hand brake. It worked fine and we did make it to the repair garage. The repair folks found a problem but have to get the part for repair from another island. It will take 3 weeks to do that. Not a good situation for us to be with out this vehicle.

Roseau Dominica Excursion Taxi - Unexpected Guests

We were in Roseau, Dominica from the Norwegian Dawn. After getting off the ship, we found a local taxi who was to show us around the area for a god price. We didn't expect, however, that the driver would let a group of School Girls would squeeze into the van, lol. It was all good.
